Good weekend folks, summer's in full swing now, and so is our progress!

Another batch of renders done this week, bringing our render count to 60 for this 0.5 update, by the time I'm done it'll probably be closer to 70. For perspective, our last full update has about 130 renders, so even this being a 0.5 release it's slightly more then half a normal update!

Fair warning though, this is the romantic route - it's going to be a bit heavier on the dialogue. Our characters will need time to banter back and forth and enjoy each other's company, Things are naturally going to be a bit slower. (Not that the main route is blazing fast to begin with, hah!)

So with barely 2 weeks left in the month, the intention is to finish all scenes by mid next week, and release the week after. After which we'll go back to our regular 8-10 week schedule per release.

Time to set off a bunch of renders before turning in for the night.

I'll see everyone again next week.

Happy weekend everyone, how's everyone doing?

I'm neck deep into posing/rendering the 0.5 update as we speak. I've also finished writing the 1st draft, and worked out most of the dialogue as well. Rewrites are coming up next and this just requires me to play and replay the sequence over and over to nail the flow of the dialogue and motivations.

Unfortunately this also means I'll get too 'used' to the writing after awhile and need to break for a couple days before coming back with fresh eyes. This is pretty much standard procedure for every release though, and part of the reason why it takes so long to write!

As I nail down the dialogue, we move to 3D to setup the scene. This is probably what takes the bulk of the time for the coming weeks, we're also experimenting with cloth simulation for certain articles of clothing (like the one shown above.)

So, 3 weeks left to go before my self-imposed deadline. Better get back to work, I'll see everyone again next week!

Happy weekend all, I hope everyone's had a chance to play the new update.

So as I take a small breather after sending off v0.12, writing has began on the next one. This one is going to be a bit different - It's a 0.5 update that branches off right before the party. You'll get the option to not go to the party and instead spend some time at home.

This is the beginnings of the romance path that will split off properly further down the line.

I've stated before that I won't do both path at once, but I thought I should also do an update to show the beginnings of it.

So what actually differs character-wise in a romance vs corruption path? There are many subtle nuances but the main difference is the agency of the MC. Along the corruption path, either by his speech or actions. the MC takes more matters into his own hands, pushing our characters down a favoured path.

That's not to say the MC is placid in the romance path. He still take actions for sure, but in a more subtle fashion. A veiled word here and there to hint at his intents rather then saying it out loud.

But because we're doing a more nuanced take of this relationship, it takes time for the difference in approaches to build up to its conclusion. No mind-control magic or drugs to help us here, just careful building of bridges between characters.

I'm hoping to get this 0.5 release out soon, hopefully before the end of the month. The render-gods willing.

Hey all, another post-release update!

So some thoughts and retrospective on the latest update.

Firstly, time and schedule - It took about the time I thought it would. Not counting the 1 week where essentially no real work was done because of unexpected travel, we hit pretty close to our estimates! (30th April is still April!)

So next, where is this story going?

Currently we're at Day 3, I've planned for this to end at between Day 10 to 15 (Act 1). This largely depends on the character progression. The general outline and treatment for each day has been planned out, but it's hard to tell where the pacing of the story will lead us organically.

15 days might feel too ponderous ("People shouting from the sidelines - 'Just get it on already!'"), but it might also be the right amount to not force the situation.

Somewhere along the story, it'll splinter into two branching paths. This is when the MC will take a stand and make his decision. All your decisions till that point will determine which path you take.

In the interest of having an actual story to play, we're going to be focused on one path first, then the other. Patreons might be able to affect this somewhat via polls sometime down the line :D

Slightly earlier update this week, 1st pass of the dialogue has been written and now the rewriting/fixing can commence! This is the step where I'll be doing playtests and dialogue reads to make sure everything flows and feels real. Arguably the hardest step in the process - writing can come to a complete halt if we can't find an elegant way for the lines to proceed naturally.

Regardless, next version should be out within the next 10 days, and I'll be simultaneously be working on fleshing out the story for the next instalment at the same time.

Happy Weekend everyone!

With dialogue writing well underway, I'm actually coming out slightly ahead of schedule, I'm a little surprised myself, seeing how I almost lost a week of work due to some last minute travel last month. However I'll be using this extra time to introduce some, bonus "unlockables" (pin-ups if you will) for reaching certain story points. These will be viewable in a separate gallery.

One caveat though, I don't want to delay the next release adding more features - so while I'll be adding the bonus stuff, it'll probably be introduced in a patch midway to the next release.

Next on the list of things I'm working on - the new shaders mentioned last week! The preview image you see above is the new skin shader. You can see how much better it reacts to lights! It really feels like skin now. Eventually all characters will get the same treatment, and I'll also need to re-render all the previous shots. (I only used this new shader in the final scenes of the next release.) I hope you'll agree with me how much better it looks!

Phew, that's a ton of stuff in the works. As always feel free to ask any questions or leave comments either in the posts or in discord/twitter.

Finally managed to fix and render this! Turns out having thousands of grass and moss instances in a forest setting is bad for your graphics card. Who knew?? And with this, our renders are complete! Thanks everyone for your tips and advice - onward to writing dialogue.

This is not a substitute for our weekly Patreon update though, that is still to come later this week!

Literally the 2nd last shot to render and my machine can't deal. Crashes on every attempt, the memory load from all the trees and leaves is bringing it down to it's knees! Someone lend me some video ram for a day or two?

Looks like I'll need to do some pruning to get this out the door..

Don't know what your financial situation is like but if you have a spare £30 a month there is a service called Shadow that's basically a virtual machine & it's bloody awesome, it's changed the way I make my game, I used to be able to render like 60-70 renders a month, but now with shadow I can easily do 1000+ a month & fit in a couple of animations to. Also...*cough* #promo *cough*, using code WAYMDXKU get's you £10 off your first month xD but I swear it's awesome

Wow, thanks for the suggestion. It looks like they're running a GTX1080 which is way better then what I have. Might not be fesible for this upcoming release but maybe for future uses. Definitely checking it out!

Not to sure when but they also said they'd be bring out a service that offers a machine with x4 1080ti's for like £50 a month or something like that, the speeds on that would be insane xD

Hey folks, time for another weekly update. The re-renders are going well, we have approximately 115/125 renders done now, this should be complete by tomorrow! (Fingers crossed)

After which would be a solid week or two of writing, binding the story together for the next step. This next release is a setup of sorts - laying the ground work on which our story can progress.

On another semi-related note, I've been experimenting with a more realistic skin shader on our beloved characters. (more transparency on skin, wetness, and redness on the nose and fingers when the light shines through.) It's very very much a work in progress as I try to grasp it's inner workings. For now it's only used in the last scene, since going back and re-rendering all the scenes would set us back by another 3-4 weeks. Yikes, probably don't want to do that.

We're just a few weeks out from this next release now. Stay tuned for more news coming soon!

Happy weekend folks! I'm happy to announce that all posing are Done. Lighting, also Done.

Now I just need keep this thing rendering through the day, everyday.

One would think we just need to hit render and it just does it thing, but no. There's a million ways a render will mess up and it's not uncommon to have to re-render a shot multiple times to get it to look right. Or if we were to make a decision to change time of day or add a prop, now all affected shots needs to be rendered to keep continuity. Would it that we can plan everything down to the tiniest details but you know what they said about best laid plans..

But Still! On track for an April release, despite some minor setbacks.

I'm back from the last minute trip! Accommodations turned out to be less private then I would like, killing the chances of getting any real work done. Thankfully thanks to remote rendering I still managed to push out a bunch of renders from last week's setup. It's not perfect (Like the above render), some lighting needs to be re-tweaked, some renders failed completely, but a good chunk made it unscathed!

We're 4-5 weeks out from release so I'll like to get cracking asap, there's still some lost time to be made up from this week. Thanks for tuning in, I'll see ya all next week!

Right before I left for some travelling obligations, I set up a batch render to go through all my scenes and start spitting out images to google drive - good news everyone! I now have a bunch of new images to share! However, not all are successful, about 30% of them failed and needs to be re-rendered. I can't complain though, seeing how I'm not at my home desktop and still got some images rendered. Here are some previews!

There'll be some post work done to reduce grain, and some posing/facial pose tweaks to be done, but these are close! It might not seem much but almost every shot has a unique lighting setup to cast nice rim lights on the characters, or accent their bodies to make them look less flat, showing off the curvature of their limbs and face. Nice lighting unfortunately, does not come free, there's a significant time investment required.

It increase my workload to do unique setups for shots (esp with the slow renders) but I think the final results shows the extra care taken!

There are some NSFW renders but unfortunately those are amongst those that failed - I'll re-render those shortly once I get back this Saturday!

Welcome to another weekly update! What you see here is a WIP render of a certain someone's house we'll be visiting in the next update. I'm not quite done set dressing it yet, but it should be done over the next day or so.

I'll be updating the progress tracker right after this post goes live, the biggest increase this week are the renders - we're at about 40% done now! Likely 50% by the end of this week. This means writing can start next week as I continue to pose and render.

That dovetails nicely into week's update, I'm scheduled to do a bit of travelling and have no access to my desktop for most of the week. Perfect timing to get some writing done!

Arguably the more difficult the step of the process I might add. For every line of dialogue that makes it into the update, it has probably been rewritten multiple times. Part of that is trying to figure out the mindset of the character as he enters the situation, then we want to set the mood of the moment and have that work in tandem with the visuals.

Thanks for tuning in to the weekly rambles, I'll be heading back to the render farms to knock out the rest of this week's scenes!

We're neck deep in rendering now, posing and churning out renders at the rate of 4-8 per day. Looking at the current scope, the next update is easily twice the size of v0.1! While this has increased the daily workload, we should still be on track for an end April release - who needs sleep anyway?!

On a more serious note, I did expect the scope of the story to grow, and have planned some additional days in the original estimates for this. Always add 25% more then you need!

I'm off the spend the next 48 hours crafting each shot carefully to make the most of the weekend, please leave any comments or questions below or in discord!

Here's the Dad character that we will meet in the upcoming release! It's still a rough render right now, but it shows the general attitude of the character and his social status.

For those interested, things to improve to make this a proper beauty render are -

  • Better rim lights to silhouette character (shoulders should pick up slight rim from windows)
  • Rework eye shaders to pickup highlights better.
  • Blacks are looking a wee bit too crushed, need to lift that slightly
  • Looking a bit noisy, addtional fill lights to lift the blacks should also solve this
  • Refine posing

But seeing that this is just a test render, my time would probably be better spent working on the actual shots. Thanks for reading this update, time to go back to setting up shots for today's overnight render!

As we slip into the weekend, here's some test renders of someone we're gonna meet as we start the design process and layout our shots.

I was hoping to get some locations rendered this week but setting up the characters took a bit longer then expected. There's still a couple days left in the week though, so I might still get to them yet!

There's also been a bunch of rewriting this week, tweaking the story to foreshadow things to come. I've got the story outline written till day 9, a good couple of updates away. This lets me go back and tweak things that needed to happen in day 3 - so that it makes sense further down the road.

Most of the assets needed for the next update are ready, though there are still a couple that's needed. I'm hoping I won't have to resort to modelling it myself or that'll set us back at least a week. Fingers-crossed, I should just be able to purchase the assets from a model store, there's a couple that I have yet to check!

So back to the test renders, I'm testing out lighting and wardrobe right now, including night/day look development. Once I get the key lights setup and mood lighting tuned in, we can spend less time redoing it from scratch later on. Also on the to-do list is preparing expression sheets for her so she doesn't look too off-model when we start pushing expressions. And if that hasn't clue you in yet - yes, we're going to be meeting her in the next update!

That's it for this week's update, I'm planning to do the same treatment to some of side characters we meet (though not to the same extent) and get layout started asap. I'm looking forward to start sharing some of the locations with everyone!

In the interest of transparency and accountability, I've done up a quick image to show how we're approaching the production in the coming weeks. While these are estimates, it's my goal to try and hit them as close as possible.

This doesn't mean that any particular bit is only restricted to that week however! Eg: Writing is mostly done in the 1st week to lay the ground work for the upcoming release, but as we move along there'll still be writing done here and there as we figure out better ways or new scenarios to tell the story. Typically the story has been already written for 3-4 releases ahead of the current production but as it morphs and change as we get into dialogue writing, swathes of rewriting is needed for it to make sense (not to mention to foreshadow things that will happen in the future!)

Currently we're at the end of Week 1, and about to move on to assets and set building!

Been a busy week of writing and rewriting! This week mostly has me laying out the main story beats for the next release. Just like the v0.1 release, I've probably rewrote enough times for 3 different stories. Each version build upon the last until eventually we get something that works - enough things happening to move the story forward, while having our characters spend time with each other. And all the while this is happening, planting seeds of what will happen next.

While we can easily have the characters get intimate quickly with each other, doing it too soon will ring false. There'll be no motivation, no real history to draw upon. Instead what we're trying to do is to keep the characters engaged yet apart - for as long as it deems logical, before the final conclusion. (Not to mention the alternate route that will bring them together in completely different ways.) The overarching goal is to bring a touch of realism to adult visual novel story-telling. Something that seemed to have fallen a bit at the wayside these days.

We're in a good place now though, and should be able to start building our sets and finish up the design of our secondary characters in a few days. Hopefully by this time next week I can get some test renders going and we get our first look at the locations for the next update!

Finally got the new graphics done, rebuilt the game and added an android build. Those glass shards took the longest time!

This is the only change to the game so don't worry about it unless you want the swanky new menu graphic!

Much thanks to everyone who tried the game!

So the first order of things is a quick name change - It was a working title that I intended to make into my actual title (even got all the banners made!) but turns out someone got there first. But this also means I have a few other titles in-mind ready to go, gonna choose one and change all (all!) the names on my banner/game etc. Tis gonna be a busy day!

Second, I want to talk a bit more about the progression system for the characters, you'll have noticed a few choices in-game that are rather inconsequential right now. They actually trigger the love/corruption values behind the scenes and will lead you down separate paths, we're already store that value in game - just waiting for the chance to use it!

It's not going to be a simple text swap down the different paths, it's essentially a whole different route on it's own with it's own CG etc. Though to get things moving we're going to focus on the corruption path right now, the first 2 updates will be building up to that with the path splintering off around day 6 in-game. The script is still being written as I type so the actual timing might be adjusted a little but that's the plan in general.

Last but not least, I figured that we should totally reward the early Patreons who showed interest in the project, so!

The first 25 patreons will have their names added to the credits list regardless of the level they pledged at.

Anddd we're live!

After almost 2 months of frantic writing, coding and rendering we're finally done with v0.1!

To celebrate the first ever release, this download will be available for everyone right off the bat -

I hope everyone enjoys this, we have already started writing for the next content release, and starting to source and setup 3D assets. In between content releases, we'll also do smaller increment updates to fix bugs/under-the-hood improvements etc. These will have no set dates and will be more sporadic as we focus on the main content.

So as we near the deadline for v0.1, I'm happy to announce that all the renders are now done! We still have some re-rendering to do to improve some of the noise/imperfections in the images, but that should be relatively easy!

I've already started coding and writing dialogue for the 2nd day. And as with all writing, rewrites are a fact of life. I'm hoping to get a first draft out by the end of next week, which would give me 2 weeks for rewrites and fleshing out the character interactions.

Also on the todo list is alternate dialogues and option menus for the corruption/love path. All the choices made in the first 4 days or so will push you down either path, so choose wisely!

Another week of writing and rendering, this week has me coming to grips with the more intricate lighting controls, hopefully that hardwork is reflected in my renders!

Much time has also been spent setting up cameras, making sure they convey the emotion of the moment. (eg: using a wide lense to frame the MC in the shot to make him feel more isolated) As much of a pain it is to set this up, I think it's really important in order set the right tone in any specific shot. This unfortunately also means I need to repose the characters for it to work to that specific camera angle.

Still, despite all that extra work we're still on track for an end Feb release. Current plan is to finish up all Day 2 renders by end of next week, which would leave me 3 weeks to flesh out the dialogue and transitions, included in that time would be sourcing sound effects (or maybe foley), setting up in the main menu in renpy, and coding the choices to setup the ground work for the romance/corruption path.


Also updated is the progress tracker on the main page, the story is mostly done. That last 5% is just me exploring different setups. There's probably around 30+ renders to be done which will bring us to about 100+ renders. Oh and please follow me on twitter for bite-size daily updates on the happenings on the project!

On to Day 2 of in-game events!

A few major things happened the last week -

My graphic designer finished up my logo, check it out!

(Why the hell is this picture so big!! It's only 256x256)

I like how the lemon looks like a boob xD

Next, coding has started for real in Renpy, some Python refresh courses were needed plus a ton of reading to get up to speed - it's a been awhile since I sat in front of a code compiler.

Day 1 of the game is completely implemented now, this week I'm going to refine the dialogue and pacing while rendering the scenes for Day 2. Once it hits Day 3, I'm packing everything up for an official v0.1 release!

First batch of renders done! Some preliminary scripting done, and outline + progression written for the first week or so of game play.

Lighting and rendering night scenes is a really tricky beast, but the first night is done. Moving on to the next day's morning squence now. I've got multiple paths planned for the characters but the focus right now is on making one path work first.
