Paola is the very first person I shot for my project Celestials✨! She was waiting table in a place I had a lunch once, and I muster my courage to ask her if she'd be into modeling for this.

Lucky me she said yes :)

The inspiration for that one was Phosphorus, the Morning Star (same as the Evening Star, which is actually the planet Venus)

Coronamaison 2020-08-12T05:41:26+00:00close

At the beginning of the lockdown, French artist Penelope Bagieu prompted artists to draw their ideal home : the coronamaison. Like, a cadavre exquis of a building with all our homes. They created a template, et voilà !

I threw a few ideas of how I wanted my room on paper, and went for it.

Buuuuut it actually took me months to complete, because I haven't done perspective work in ages, because I wanted it pretty detailed, and mainly because it was never a priority in my never-ending list of projects-in-progress.

I'm also always very slow to work with colors because I'm too undecisive.

... And at some point I have to decide that it's finished, I guess.

Just a couple of shots I snapped of my roomie, in the beautiful evening light. Elise is a fashion designer, and also do photography - and it's such a pleasure to work with someone who knows what it is to be on both side of the camera.

My daily life memory has always been a bit hazy, and I suffer from mild prosopagnosia that doesn't help neither. I don't know if it comes from ADHD or trauma or just congenial traits, but it mixes very strangely with my strong photographic memory and synesthesia. Sometimes it's great, because, it kinda frees me from the past, sometimes, it's quite an issue. Lately, I felt like I was slowly creating a new memory bank to ground me better in Canada... And taking portraits of people to remember has always been a great way to do this.

Like any proper millennial, I started a group chat with some queer friends to exchange the darkest memes (that's how we cope) about thelockdown. It quickly became an infinite source of fun and distraction, a moral support, a group therapy, an activists incubator, and I threw the idea of a drag/make up contest, that turned into a serie of virtual photoshoots.

Anaïs B, as usually, really committed to the drag side !

It's interesting already to look back at how the lockdown made us find new solution to keep doing some art and magic.

When it started, I was stuck in another kind of isolated situation : Vancouver didn't make a lockdown as dire or strict as it' been for some countries, but I had moved here recently, therefore, all my relatives and friends were an ocean apart anyway, on some very different timezones...

I ended up connecting online even more than before (and let me tell you, my "online time" before was bad already).

Like any proper millennial, I started a group chat with some queer friends to exchange the darkest memes (that's how we cope) about the situation. This group quickly became an infinite source of fun and distraction, a moral support, a group therapy, an activists incubator. I made new friends. And threw the idea of a drag/make up contest, that turned into a serie of virtual photoshoots.

That one with Deborah is the first we did !!!

Deborah had never do a photo-shooting with me, I'm not sure she ever modeled before ! She really committed to have the most extra outfit and make-up, and our common interest for Dr Who and gender-bending miiiiight be showing. I was testing out my ideas for this project, just trying to create something with the few stuffs I had in my flat, while trying to direct her in this unexpected setting. All in all, a very exciting experiment :D

Deborah pointed me out on that project that most of the different portrait reminded her of Tarot cards... And she would be, indeed, the first, the Magician !

The frame within a frame in the first one is a fun visual element. It took me a minute to realize it was an actual, physical frame and not just composited in.

Dwam - 11 Jun 20 03:41
It's so interesting for me that you noticed, because framing my subjects is a recurring pattern in my works. Frames, framing lines, mirror, window, panels... I've been discussing it extensively with one of the friend I shot for the virtual portraits serie through my ipad (again a frame), so, I decided to put a physical one when I shot C to connect these different photosets. But because we shot most of the photos with the frame at the beginning, when I hadn't figured out my lighting correctly, I just kept one that I really like and discarded most of the others. .

Douceur Brutale - The Shedding of Anaïs. 2020-04-25T02:00:02+00:00close

So... Here is a project very dear to me, and that has stayed pupating for years before I could actually make it a reality.

I wanted to work with sheer tights and plants and knife forever, but never exactly figure out how and with whom. I tried to talk Solwenn into it, but I initially wanted to do it a video project, and her wrists and articulations are too fragile for what I had in mind. Then, during a visit, Anaïs started telling me about her flower projects and fantasies. Considering how many flowers I tattooed on her as well, it made sense we should try this together. I tweaked my initial idea a little bit, because we couldn't go fully-nude.

Weird fact : about a month before the planned photo-session, my friend Maya Mihindou described me a project she wanted to do, and it happened to be quite similar ! I was already kinda set on doing it with Anaïs, and we ran out of time to do another version together when I went to Marseille where she lives, but, well, it might happen in the future !

Anaïs has a very dainty look and a natural grace, coupled with a sharp mind and ferocious wit ; I aimed to match these in picture.

Judging by our conversations and her involvement, I feel she's been blossoming into feminism and activism lately. There is so much to unpack, deconstruct, analyse, and heal.

There is so much to shed.

Have you noticed how beautiful is the vocabulary of shedding ?

English of French, no matter, all these words resonate so much. Well, I guess, as a tattoo artist, a nude photographer, living for so long with someone suffering with ichthyosis, it make senses I'm still obsessed with everything related to skin. And as a Scorpio, being obsessed with metamorphosis makes sense as well.

Just a few Solstice cards I made for my friends and family :)

Again I've been using Caitlin Ffrench's locally made watercolors. I'm in love with that small palette I've got.

Sadly these really didn't go well through the scanner, and most of the nuances and glitter are lost.

I'm really into the tree nursery thing - there are lots of them in the rainforest in BC ! So I keep drawing some.

This Celestials one is a little special, cause I convinced my Mum to pose for it. She usually hates having her picture taken, and... well, let's say that due to some family issues, we all have a complicated relationship with photography.

But she let me this time, and I quickly created a makeshift background and used the window light.

Remember the super charismatic and gorgeous Myrlène as the Dawn's Chorus ?

Well, for Celestials✨, she impersonated both dawn and dusk concepts ! We made a sunsetish, dark and golden "Last Sun Rays" version as well.

You know, that shifting moment when half the sky is ablaze and reddening, with rays glittering on windows ans waters, and the other half starts still seems weirdly pale and intense, fast shading to intense teal, imperial blue and dark indigo ?

Some oldies today, because social distancing is hard and a lot of us think about hugging, and I myself think about gay hugs a lot :)

That sweet November when Silver and Jérôme Sergent Pouce came to visit me and we did so many photo-shootings !

They are adorable together, so I talked them into doing these pictures for my Radical Tenderness project (still in the making).

All these first images have been taken with a digital camera, but somehow I lost my original files :-/ I just retrieved the smallest version, by screencaping the Lightroom previews as big as I could on my screen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This one is a double-exposure done on my little analog Mamiya528. I shot beforehand a 35mm film roll at night, with these neon lights, rolled back my film, and shot again above it (therefore, there is a whole film with these kind of double exposure).

These next ones have been shot on my big Mamiya645 (my best/favorite camera) (that isn't even mine, but a loan from my godfather, actually), on 120mm films. As ever, I'm amazed by the quality of the colors on these films.

It's so tender, although they look on fire 🔥✨

Artemisia is an amazing model I stumbled upon on Instagram, in that bold period where I didn't hesitate to write someone I didn't know right away, when I thought we could create beautiful things together. And I'm really glad I did. Timing seemed to be on our side, because she was planning to come to Nantes for a couple of other photo-shootings.

Artemisia's gorgeous pink and blue braids hairdo remind me of the mesmerizing swirls of dust and gaz from the nebulae clouds.

Some nebulae come from the gas and dust thrown out by the explosion of a dying star, such as a supernova. Other nebulae are regions where new stars are beginning to form. For this reason, some are called "star nurseries." 🌟

Thank you all for coming and keeping me company ! It was such a fun and interesting experience, but now I’m exhausted. Hello my dear Patreons !

Well, following that kinda-failed-but-eventually-ok Livestream test of yesterday, I'm gonna try doing this again tomorrow. This time, I'll be drawing an illustration. I found a way to use my phone as a webcam, so, we'll try this.

Mind me, this is all experimental for now, so it might be a bit DIY and messy to start with, but, it should be fun and kinda hypnotic to watch an illustration take form.

So ! Let's meet again, Thursday, March 26th, at 2pm PDT = 9pm GMT

Hello my dear Patreons ! Hi old ones, welcome new ones :)

Again, thank you all for your support and concern, especially these last few days. I don't think we can ever express how much your support help us artists, in any form, and how heart-warming it is.

I've been thinking about new ways to share and connect, and since many of us are confined and or self-quarantined, I reckon it could be a great time to do some Livestreams ! It could be simply answering questions and chatting a bit, to start with, and then hopefully set up something where I'm drawing live, or even, explaining my photo editing process ? (it's boring in reality, though).

Would you be up for something like this ? What would you prefer ?

But would you be available ? When ?

Well, in my experience... every one goes through a period of anxiety and craziness with the confinement thing, which makes sense and is probably necessary somehow. I hope that will be a good distraction :)

Midseason's dream : La Belle Dame sans Merci 2020-03-20T13:01:00+00:00close

Here is the portraits of my dear friend Thelma, and her ever-changing fairy face.

Thelma wanted to try the Midseason's Dream project with an all-white-flowers palette, therefore she balanced it with quite a colorful make-up.

Thelma is a Thelma and Louise's fan, a former art-history student, very passionated about classical painting and all sorts of visual arts. She's currently co-creating Sources Artisanales, a place to share and promote local art and crafts creators in Nantes and around.

La Belle Dame sans Merci
O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
Alone and palely loitering?
The sedge is withered from the lake,
And no birds sing.

O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
So haggard and so woe-begone?
The squirrel’s granary is full,
And the harvest’s done.

I see a lily on thy brow,
With anguish moist and fever-dew,
And on thy cheeks a fading rose
Fast withereth too.

I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful, a fairy’s child;
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.

I made a garland for her head,
And bracelets too, and fragrant zone;
She looked at me as she did love,
And made sweet moan

I set her on my pacing steed,
And nothing else saw all day long,
For sidelong would she bend, and sing
A faery’s song.

She found me roots of relish sweet,
And honey wild, and manna-dew,
And sure in language strange she said—
‘I love thee true’.

She took me to her Elfin grot,
And there she wept and sighed full sore,
And there I shut her wild, wild eyes
With kisses four.

And there she lullèd me asleep,
And there I dreamed—Ah! woe betide!—
The latest dream I ever dreamt
On the cold hill side.

I saw pale kings and princes too,
Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;
They cried—‘La Belle Dame sans Merci
Hath thee in thrall!’

I saw their starved lips in the gloam,
With horrid warning gapèd wide,
And I awoke and found me here,
On the cold hill’s side.

And this is why I sojourn here,
Alone and palely loitering,
Though the sedge is withered from the lake,
And no birds sing.

I've been following Zoe for a while on French twitter and on Instagram, and we've been talking online for years, trying to meet across France to take photos together. But sometimes, timing just never really wants it to happen. We kept missing out.

Then I came to Marseille, to visit my dear friend Maya, on my kind of "last-month European tour" before my departure abroad. Maya told me of someone she thought I knew, that she would see often at work, and we eventually figured out it was Zoe. Whom I contacted at once (in the middle of a hike by the ocean). I was there just 2 days, I had somehow 2 hours available the next day, and Zoe too.

It was finally happening !

I tried to throw a Celestials✨ themed portrait session, with what I had in hand. And we made Zoe personify Stardust.

Ever since I met Fennel, I've been struck by his ressemblance with John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness in Dr Who/Torchwood. I don't mind, tho

Add to this : his best friend ever, Matthias, also sometimes has this Tenth Doctor thing, and he once told me he had a similar blue suit, so... I had to.

Ref, for the non-Whovians :

Honestly, we had to pull that photo-shooting off in like, 12 minutes. Matthias had just picked up his suit from the dry-cleaning for a wedding and he had to go almost at once, but I begged him to come just so I could snap a few portraits of him with Fennel. It was literally the only last moment we could possibly have them in the same room before we move to Canada. A nice way for me to recycle my starry background from Celestials✨

Fun fact : I found that pic when I was looking for screenshots to add to this post (and when I therefore fell back into a pit of Dr Who's memes). But I don't think any of them has seen it, and it wasn't a reference while we shot. In fact, we didn't use any reference, really, because everything happened in such a rush. And we were laughing way too much anyway.

For Secret Santa, I made a little illustration for Michelle, who runs Arcane Body Arts.

I knew she's a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings, and I wanted to put to good use Caitlin Ffrench's amazing handmade local pigments watercolors. Mine have glitter in it \*•*/

I started to sketch a general composition, using many pictures from my New Zealand trip as references to invent a new mixed up Hobbit's hole, with a little pine tree nursery on top of it, because, it's Canada.

Then I outlined the base with some colored Tombow pens (and that was a very poor choices of tools, cause they are not waterproof, as I found out soon enough). I hadn't done watercolors for a very long time, so, I'm quite rusty.

Then I got too focused and totally forgot to take any picture of the different stages of my process 😅 You can just see that I added the golden pigment at the end to make it look like lit windows, and I traced above a few lines that needed more definition after the water washed it away.

Voilà !

(it's quite a bad phone picture though)

I didn't want to buy wrapping paper, so I made my own. Simply with cut potatoes stamps and tattoo ink :)
