Hello! Thank you for using yiff.party!

We hope you enjoy using it. yiff.party operates on a non-profit basis, and as such, all the server expenses are paid by our users. We don't want to run ads or infect you with crypto miners. We depend on users like you to keep the site running, and to preserve years and terabytes of amazing content—some of which is no longer available from its original creators!

Because of the nature of the site, many users are reluctant to donate. That's OK! yiff.party was created so everyone can enjoy the content we host without any restrictions or paywalls. But if you value the service we provide, and are able to, we—and our users—would be tremendously grateful if you considered making a donation.

Donation progress for September 2020

So far, approximately $0.00 has been raised out of our target of $400.00. We're about 0% of the way there! Please note: this tracker is updated manually—don't worry if your donation doesn't show up immediately!

yiff.party's server costs are due on the last day of each month. So, we need to meet this goal before 30 September!

How to donate?

At this time, yiff.party can only accept donations in numerous cryptocurrencies. Please select a currency below to display the relevant donation address.

Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum Classic (ETC)
Litecoin (LTC)
Why can't I donate through other means (eg. PayPal)?

Due to the nature of sites like yiff.party, it is very difficult to find payment processors who will accept clients like us. If we were to accept donations via PayPal, it wouldn't take more than a day for someone to submit an abuse report and get our account frozen. Until a viable way of accepting monetary donations becomes available, cryptocurrency will remain the only option.

There are many resources available on how to purchase crypto. For Bitcoin, check out bitcoin.org's page on buying Bitcoin for a list of methods. For beginner Bitcoin users, yiff.party recommends using an escrow service such as LocalBitcoins.

Overview

Hey Everyone!

In celebration of the release of Rime of the Frostmaiden and the (hopefully) cooling weather as we move into the fall and winter seasons in many parts of the world, a collection of 36 TTRPG content creators have come together to create a massive 150x180 grid map with new monsters, ambient music, miniatures, and magic items to all complement one another!

You can use the maps individually for epic set pieces and encounters, or combine them to give your party the opportunity to explore this great white expanse. Evidence of a mighty battle between Dragons and Jotun litter the landscape, ancient magic has been set loose and creatures from other planes have broken through. Scraps of what might once have been a powerful civilisation are reduced to ruins and rubble, filled with new monstrous inhabitants and the bones of many previous adventurers who found there way here. Tread lightly, the snow may be deep.

Patron Content

My patrons can access the Day, Night & Blizzard variants of these maps, as well as the 'Ice Cavern' level and Print resolution files HERE
Builder tier patrons and above can also get the Unfurnished variants as well as 56 new assets to customise them HERE

Here are links to all the creators involved in the project. Most have extra variations and goodies planned for their Patrons to compliment the maps and items included in this free release.

Background

Originally a simple merchant vessel, The Storm’s Call has passed through the hand of many owners in the last few decades, usually to pay off debts or via a poorly made wager. During its long years, the Storms Call has been owned by pirates, smugglers, and a variety of other vagabonds and underworld miscreants, each augmenting the vessel with their own additions and upgrades so it now barely resembles the sleek ship that first slid out of the boatyard. All manner of armaments, extra cabins and hidden nooks decorate the hull and decks.

The largest and most recent of those enhancements is an enormous canvas balloon, as large and wide as the ship itself, that floats gently above in place of sails. At sea this functions much in the same way as the sails would, albeit a little less wieldy and slower, but it gives the ship a huge advantage over many of its counterparts, that of flight! When needed the central brazier can be boosted with arcane means, greatly increasing the hot air caught in the balloon and giving it the lift necessary to take off. Be careful though, landing again is not nearly so easy!

I backed this Kickstarter, because I've always used Devin Knight's tokens for my D&D/Pathfinder games. Then I took a quick look at your work, and... ...wow! Now I'm backing you on Patreon. I mostly do my own maps for games, but your Patreon is so worth it for the assets and your maps are so beautiful that I'll certainly be using some of them in my games.

I was intrigued when I saw the artists involved but found the descriptions of just how the purchase of tokens and how the tier rewards worked to be lacking in clarity. A couple of days ago you responded to a comment by Daren Mitchell on the KS and only after reading that was it clear how it is going to work once the site is up. I think you really need to take your response to Daren and make it an FAQ.

September Release Schedule and The Rest of 2020 2020-09-01T17:37:29+00:00

Hi Everyone!

I have a few things to talk to you about for the release schedule for this month, and a couple of ideas I have for the rest of the year.

September Release Schedule

The releases this month are likely to be a bit irregular for a couple of reasons. Firstly I am moving back to my home country at the end of this week (all being well) after being trapped abroad for the last 6 months due to the global pandemic. With long distance travel still being quite disrupted this is going to take a few days, so there will be no new Map Set or Into the Wilds map this coming weekend, but both will be ready next week instead.

On top of that I am involved in two really fun collaborations that are coming out this month that I think you will all enjoy, but they are currently slated to release at about the same time, so there will probably be 3 new map sets in the space of about a week in the middle of the month. The last set of the month should be released as normal, which will be the first map of our new theme chosen by you 'Return to the Big City'.

The Rest of the Year

For the last year or so, since I started this Patreon, I have effectively been working 7 days a week not stop. I am incredibly grateful for all of your support and I truly love doing this, so it never really feels like work and I am happy to put in the time to continue making new artwork for you all. But having said that, every artist or creator has to be aware of the possibility of burn out.

For this reason I am planning to reduce my map set releases to 3x per month instead of 4x in October, November and December. This will give me some time to recharge, and also spend some time with family and friends I haven't been able to see since last year (see being stuck abroad above).

Instead I would like to commission some of the other very talented artists and cartographers from the TTRPG community to contribute something for you all for the 4th release of each of those 3 months. These will be things you can still use in your campaigns, and will match my art style as much as possible, but will be something other than battlemaps to give you something a little different. I have set up a poll for patrons HERE to vote on what they would like this to be. The options are things like Town & City Maps, Region or World Maps, Perspective Illustrations, Isometric maps etc.

For those of you at the Builder and Forgemaster tiers, I will still release a new asset pack and Foundry VTT module for these weeks, so you won't be missing out, and Adventure Modules and Tokens will be delivered as usual for Adventurer Tier patrons.

Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about any of this.

Thank you all as always!
Tom

Background

Centuries ago, there was a warlord who gathered ancient artifacts and used them to control an army of dragons, sending them into battle alongside his forces. This warlord gained the name of ‘The Dragon Khan’. In order to find a way to oppose the Dragon Khan, a group of dragon worshipping mages and wizards came together to create a mighty weapon designed to end the life of the creatures they revered, so that none of the them would have to suffer the indignity of being controlled by a human.

They used their knowledge of arcana and divine magic to create a tool that separated magic from flesh, a spear that they called the Dracana Mortis. After the war with the Dragon Khan was won, the spear was hidden away in a temple dedicated to the glory of dragons, but a shadow organisation, known only as The Omen Speakers, sought out the weapon, and attempted to use it to end all life. They infiltrated the dragon temple and conducted a dark ritual in secret, but couldn’t control the magic they sought to create and a great wave of death exploded out, killing the Omen Speakers, Dragon Worshippers and all creatures within a few miles.

Because of this, no one has dared to enter the temple since, not knowing what caused the pulse of destruction. Over time some of the plant life has begun to grow back in the area, and stories of a hidden treasure deep within the temple mean that curiosity may overcome some of the initial caution for any group of adventurers passing through.

This is the free set of this months 'Into The Wilds' maps. They are also completely free! Patrons get access to high resolution version and extra variants.

Patrons can access the complete bundle HERE

Patrons voted for this months maps to be 'Swamp' themed. The bundle includes:

The Marshes - The path through the marshes is well trodden, but not without danger. Swirling mists and glowing lights can lead even the most confident of travellers off the beaten track, and those who stray too far do not often return.

Crone's Hut - Deep in the swamp is a rotten old hut, suspended above the murky waters on tall stilts. It is said that an old crone lives there who can tell your fortune, and for the right price maybe even change it. Beware though, she does not deal in gold or treasures.

Wetlands - At a certain point the swamps become more water than land, unless you happen to be carrying a boat this is the time to turn back. Many creatures lurk in the grimy pools, and sometimes even the corrupted plant life will try to drag you below the surface, the swamp claiming you for itself.

Sunken Ruins - This region was once lush and green, and was home to many, but a corruption placed upon the land caused it to deteriorate into the murky bog you see today. Many of the remnants of this civilisation have already been claimed by the swamp, but a few scattered ruins can still be found, sinking into the mire.

Swamp Village - Despite the fetid conditions, there are some who choose to call the swamp home. For many of them, there were few other options. Some were too poor to live in the kingdom's towns and cities, while others had reason to flee more civilised locales. Whatever their reason for coming here, the swamp has forced them to become both steadfast and wary.

Kickstarter Announcement - The Token Vault 2020-08-22T19:58:21+00:00close

Hi Everyone,

I am very excited to announce a new Kickstarter project that I am involved with. The Token Vault is a browser based token manipulation tool that will allow you to choose a token from one of your favourite artists, and easily customise it by changing the colours, skin tone, weapons, armour, hairstyles and quite literally everything else so it perfectly suits your PC or NPC. Watch the video above to see some examples of the application in use.

The website and application development is being led by Dungeons and Doodles, and they currently have myself, Devin Night (Immortal Night Tokens) and Jan Loos (Online Tabletop Tokens) on board as artists. I am sure you are familiar with their work, but if not you can check them out here:
Devin Night's Website
Jan Loos on Patreon

As the application is further developed, additional artists and token styles will be added in to the roster, and if the Kickstarter is successful future developments are planned for customisable map assets as well!

The Token Vault will be launching in early September 2020, you can sign up on the pre-launch page to get a notification when it goes live here:

This is like exactly what I've been looking for lol, so hard to get NPC tokens that are diverse instead of five people at the masquerade who look the same.
user avatar
User #32671948 - 25 Aug 20 22:24
Hey Tom: For D&D 1 inch = 5 feet, and your maps reflect this, but your tokens (just like other creators) seem to be done at a different scale. When you create tokens do you have a fixed scale that you use? (With the awesomeness of FVTT I'm trying to find this out and scale down the tokens so that everything has a consistent look to "the scale of things".)
user avatar
tomcartos - 25 Aug 20 22:57
Hey Drunemeton, I generally try to keep my tokens to the same scale as the maps, I usually base it off the head being about 6" wide, but once I add the detail, clothing, linework etc the invariably end up a little larger than life.
user avatar
User #36788843 - 23 Aug 20 10:47
It’s been a pleasure working with you so far Tom! Thanks for all your input and tokens! Looking forward to working towards the launch!
user avatar
User #37371267 - 23 Aug 20 11:53
Any details on the planned business model of this project? Two of artists mentioned are Patreon focused, which is perfectly fine, but the third is selling his artwork on a per-pack basis which doesn't fit this kind of app nor does it mix with Patreon business model well (or at all).
user avatar
tomcartos - 23 Aug 20 13:55
Hi Necxelos, It will be a marketplace. Myself, Devin and Jan are only the first 3 artists, but other artists will be able to contribute as before launch. We are discussing discount options for patrons, but it will not be a Patreon based model. It will be a per-token model rather than per-pack model primarily.
user avatar
User #37371267 - 23 Aug 20 21:06
This is very sad news indeed. Patreon created a very fairly priced business model, based on mutual respect between creatirs and their communities. Marketplace is the opposite of that :( I hope you guys (You and Jan Loos) will reconsider...
user avatar
tomcartos - 23 Aug 20 21:09
We are not in charge of the app, pricing or KS campaign in any way, we were just bought in as artists and are helping with promotion. The pricing will be very reasonable on the marketplace, but as it will have a growing collection of artists and contributors, patreon would not work as a platform for it.
user avatar
User #37371267 - 23 Aug 20 21:20
Definitions of reasonable vary, depending on the point of view. For example buying all of Devin's Tokens as they are now cost as much as a decent car (Central Europe) and no matter how great they are, they aren't worth that much. I doubt customizeable tokens will be cheaper so it's gonna be even more expensive. From my personal experience: people prefer to have access to everything and have this peace of mind that "whatever is needed I got it" instead of buying small pieces and being restricted by that. And we're talking just changing colors. Several artists (Forgotten Adventures for example) already provide editable source files of their art, all within Patreon ecosystem.
user avatar
tomcartos - 23 Aug 20 21:27
I understand this model won't work for everyone. The Kickstarter and app are for those that would prefer it. We will still be continuing to release tokens on our respective patreon pages.
user avatar
User #32671948 - 22 Aug 20 21:09
Is this something that you will be contributing to on an ongoing basis?
user avatar
tomcartos - 22 Aug 20 21:17
Yes! The long term plan is for the Token Vault to become a large customisable token and asset marketplace with many contributing creators. I am talking to Dungeons and Doodles about possible discounts for patrons as well in the future.
user avatar
User #32671948 - 22 Aug 20 21:44
Interesting! So I assume a few “Starter Tokens” then an ongoing by-piece sale of contributing artists token? Pretty sweet. (Also in the video they show a Beholder which is Protected IP by Wizards of the Coast, so you may want to let them know…)
user avatar
tomcartos - 22 Aug 20 21:49
Thats quite clearly an IP distinct Observer! Luckily its only protected if we use the name B*holder.

Background

A forgotten forge lies hidden in the mountains. A new group of adventurers has heard that unique magical weapons can be created there, but the forge lies dormant and there is currently no Master Smith to work it. Upon first visiting the forge the party will find it dirty and long abandoned, but if they choose to investigate they will find a cache of information on how to restart it, as well as a few creatures who are currently calling it home.

The first place they need to visit Is known as the ‘Inner Fires’, located further up the mountain near its volcanic heart. They will have to overcome a series of challenges, as well as the intense heat of the flowing lava, in order to open up the gates that allow the molten rock to flow towards the forge and give it the energy it needs to activate. Once this is completed they will need to hunt down one of the fey to rediscover the lost knowledge of how to forge the blades.

Background

For generations the Titan’s Lighthouse has kept the trade and fishing vessels safe when they return to port, guiding them away from the danger of the rocks and surging currents. However, in the last few months there have been more shipwrecks than in the preceding 20 years. The trail from the town to the lighthouse is dangerous, and no one has seen the Lightkeeper family for a while, so the locals are seeking adventurers to investigate. The light still comes on every night, but sometimes there is a strangeness to it’s colour.

Lucon Lightkeeper, the current steward of the lighthouse has a wife and two children, but upon arrival at the tower there is no sign of any of them. The lower quarters seem largely abandoned, aside from a few scraps of half eaten uncooked food. Upon further investigation they find Lucon in his workshop above. Like his predecessors he is a gifted artificer, a necessary skill set to keep the crystal glowing, but he currently seems deranged and half starved, fiddling with a series of smaller crystals and instruments on his desk.

From the confused mutterings of Lucon, the party can grasp some of what happened. 6 months ago, Lucon’s highborn wife decided she could no longer stand to live in isolation at the lighthouse, Lucon was spending all of his time in his workshop and she was lonely and missing her home. She took the children on a ship and left. Since then his only focus has been trying to get her to return, but having no means of communication with her he turned to the skills he has available.

He has been experimenting with changing the magics in the lighthouse crystal, instead of spells for light, warning & repulsion he has infused the crystal with charms of attraction, hoping that her ship might pass nearby and be compelled to return to him. However, he has only succeeded in destroying many of the other vessels that use the nearby port and rely on the lighthouse, and it seems the charm magic is also slowly eating into his own mind. The crystal itself now holds some kind of power over him and he cannot leave it, even bringing it gifts and treasures from the wrecked ships, but it is never satiated.

Amazing work
UPDATE - Patreon is making some changes to the way tier pricing is displayed 2020-08-12T16:07:07+00:00

Hi Everyone,

This another dull VAT and pricing announcement, and unfortunately one that is out of my hands, but I want to make sure you are all kept informed. Patreon is making some changes to the way tier pricing is shown on the website, so that it will now include VAT up front and not at checkout. This is obviously a good decision for transparency, but may cause some confusion, as it will differ depending on where you are from. You can find more information about this HERE

To make sure it is clear, there will be no change in the amount you are actually paying each month.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Tom

Background

Near the peak of the snow covered mountain, behind a pair of solid iron doors, is the former lair of a group of mind flayers. They are long since gone, whether dead or simply elsewhere no one knows, but a series of new structures have been added in recent years. A group of scientists, mages and artificers discovered the lair and are attempting to use the knowledge found there to create artificial human clones.

The lab is accessible only by airship, or those mad enough to brave the frequent blizzards to attempt the climb. The scientists have been stealing people from nearby settlements to perform their experiments on, but so far have succeeded only in creating monstrosities, warped humanoids that exist in constant agony. Unknown to all, the answer to their questions currently lies in a lost chamber below the lab, where one of the former inhabitants still sleeps.

I honestly am loving the new tiers, the new sorting feel, and honestly all at once is better in my opinion that 1 every hour with stuff like that. In case I haven’t said it, unless I already had a map set up that was acceptable, they will be phased out soon, your maps are the only ones used in my games. All it took was the one feudal castle that had found in the Roll20 marketplace. Also happy to say that I pushed up to the Emperor Tier on day one of its release from the $3 tier.

This is the Free set of this months 'Into The Wilds' maps. The Into the Wilds maps are intended to be simpler & more generic than my regular sets and are perfect to drop in for random encounters when on the road or for when the party takes an unexpected turn and you want to be prepared. They are also completely free! Patrons get access to high resolution version and extra variants.

$3 Tier patrons and above can vote in next months Into the Wilds Theme Poll HERE

Patrons voted for this months maps to be 'Desert' themed. The bundle includes:

Arid Sands - Hours turn into days as you trudge through the dry desert, everything looks the same and you have no idea if you are making progress or walking in circles. Even the rocks are starting to look delicious.

Dunes - The winds that cause the deadly sandstorms carve out ever changing patterns in the sand. If you watch long enough, it almost seems alive as the waves move across the horizon. At night you can even hear them.

Oasis - Finally! Water. But wait....no, probably just a mirage. Even if it isn't, there's probably other creatures lurking nearby.

Canyon Crossing - The chasm splits the great desert in two, a divide between the civilised nations to the south and the raiders in the north. There are few places where the gap closes enough to cross, and where it does you are likely to find someone or something guarding the crossing place.

Boneyard - Bones of enormous desert dwelling creatures are scattered across the summit, but many of them seem far too large to have made the climb up the narrow cliff path. Did someone bring them here, or did they seek out this place when they felt their life coming to an end?

Sandworm Nest - Every now and then as you walk through the heat, you might notice an odd pile of sand that seems somehow out of place. After an hour or two the piles become more and more prevalent, until suddenly you come across a huge mound riddled with holes at least 5ft wide. What creature could have made such a thing? Are you really going to wait to find out?

Cliff Face - Fleeing from danger, you find yourselves trapped, backed into a corner with the sand swirling around you. Enemies behind and a treacherous climb ahead. Which do you choose? Act quickly or the choice may be made for you.

Use the link at the top of this post to download all of the free day and night versions of these maps.

Hello Everyone!

I am very excited to announce the release of L'Arsène's Ludicrous Larceny. This adventure is the follow up to last months 'The Rakin' package and is a huge collaboration project by 15 different creators, led by Loot Tavern & Max of Humperdink's Wares (more information about all collaborators below).

Overview

The infamous thief and gadgeteer, L’Arsène Upin, and his oft-pursued friend, Harried Houdinky, have set their sights on a most guarded treasure; the chromanova. However, with Houdinky misplaced whilst casing the joint, and L’Arsène’s last ‘subcontractors’ missing in action, he turns now to the party. Will the players learn to glide in squirrelsuits? Will they escape the warded stones of the lofty, old wizard’s tower? Will they even find a way in!?

L’Arsène’s Ludicrous Larceny is a Fifth Edition adventure intended to take 3 to 5 characters from 4th-level to 6th-level. Characters proficient in Stealth and Survival, as well as those possessing ‘loose morals’, will prove beneficial in surmounting the tasks herein.

Contents

This package includes a 90 page adventure module PDF, handouts for players, new items & monsters, spells, original illustrations, a region map, encounter battlemaps, ambient sound tracks and miniatures so you can jump right in and play.

Cobramode have made 3D printable versions of some of the miniatures, 3 of which are included in the pack. You can get the others for a discounted price HERE using the discount code 'LUDICROUS!' (available from August 1st)

What category should "The Leap" map be in now, after reorganization? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks for reminding me, that is supposed to be in the Into the Wilds section. I will add it in.

I noticed that the "Orchards, Campsite, Sawmill & Cottages" link in the Rural section is incorrect, it's going to the "Road, Farms, Swimming Pond and Clearing" page. Thank you so much for your fantastic work!

New & Updated Patreon Tiers & 1 Year Anniversary Spring Cleaning 2020-08-02T16:44:23+00:00close

Helle Everyone!

I have recently celebrated my first full year on Patreon and felt it was time to freshen things up a little. You may have already noticed a new banner and logo on the main page, and over the next few days I will also be implementing a new system for quickly and easily finding content and information from my ever expanding library. This system will replace and improve upon the 'Archive' post, which has largely outlived its purpose at this point.

Unfortunately I am unable to turn off notifications for new posts, so my apologies in advance for the unavoidable email spam, but I think this is going to make everyones life easier in the long run.

Because of the spring (summer?) clean there will be no map set this weekend, but luckily for us there are 5 weekends in August, so there is still time to get the usual amount of content released. Starting next weekend (August 9th) I will be releasing the battlemaps from June's competition winners. (Winners, I will be updating you on progress soon). I am also very happy to announce that Adventure Music will be creating an original track for each of this months maps that I will share with you all. More information about that later.

The main news from this post is that I now have brand new and improved Patreon Tiers! Each tier has a new name and icon, that doubles as a VTT character token. You can download these as a free set HERE. Adventurer Tier Patrons ($3) can access the full set with variants HERE.

There are a few minor changes to existing tiers to help me refocus my efforts and ensure that my time is spent providing content that is relevant to as many of you as possible, as well as some new tiers for extra content that you have been asking for.

If you are already signed up for one of the existing tiers that a new tier is replacing, you will automatically be transferred to the new one.

The new tiers are as follows:

Keep it simple with just the maps!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • Access to all previously released content at this tier.
  • Weekly Multi-Level/Area Map Sets (4x per month)
  • Gridded and gridless high resolution versions of every map.
  • Virtual Table Top and Print optimised files so you can play anywhere.
  • Night time variants and seasonal/weather variants.
  • Vote in Patron only Polls for map themes.
  • Bonus 'Into the Wilds' maps released weekly
  • My perpetual thanks.

This tier is replacing the existing 'Viscount' tier. The only change is that I will be discontinuing the monthly 'patreon request assets' as they took up a lot of time and I felt they were only helping a small percentage of patrons. I will implement a new system for asset suggestions soon.

Get creative with asset packs!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • All benefits of previous tiers.
  • Access to all previously released content at this tier.
  • 'Clean' unfurnished variants of maps showing walls and floors only, allowing you to customise the map content as you see fit.
  • Weekly themed asset packs with 30+ assets containing everything you need to furnish your environment.
  • My everlasting thanks.

This tier is replacing the existing 'Marquis' tier. There are no changes to this tier's rewards.

Monthly Adventures & Character Tokens!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • All benefits of previous tiers.
  • Access to all previously released content at this tier.
  • A new 5e adventure each month based on one of my map sets written by Alex from Tavern Tales
  • Additional artwork such as player handouts or bonus map variants when applicable.
  • A monthly Character Token pack.
  • Vote in Polls for the 'Into the Wilds' map series themes.
  • My endless thanks.

This tier is replacing the existing 'Tribune' tier. There are no changes to this tier's rewards.

Foundry VTT ready modules!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • All benefits of previous tiers.
  • Access to all previously released content at this tier.
  • Pre-set up scenes and asset packs in Foundry VTT with walls and dynamic lighting in place for quick play.
  • Vote in Polls for which pre-existing maps sets should be converted.
  • My immutable thanks

After the release of my Ostenwold Module for Foundry VTT, there were a lot of requests for more Foundry ready content. Starting this month Forien from Foundry Workshop will be converting all of my maps into scenes for Foundry. They will be released one week after the initial map set release on Patreon.

Foundry Workshop is made up of Eadorin and Forien, two modders from the Foundry VTT community. Their main focus is developing and maintaining high quality modules for Foundry VTT. You can check out some of the awesome modules and add ons they are creating in this video: https://youtu.be/SdBdzeWoXhU , then head over to their Patreon to help support them!

To celebrate this new tier I am releasing the entire Iido series of maps as a Foundry module, available right now for everyone who signs up to be a Forgemaster HERE!

Get custom made PC or NPC Tokens!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • All benefits of previous tiers.
  • After one full month at this tier, message me to request a custom Humanoid VTT Token for your PCs or NPCs. (Max 3 per patron in a row)
  • My sword, my bow and my axe.

    Please
note, to be eligible for this tier's rewards, any monthly limits must be set no lower than 4x your pledge amount.

Since releasing my first few Character Token packs I have had requests for custom tokens. This will now allow you to sign up for some of your own! The tokens created as part of this tier, along with any variants, will be released to all patrons at the Adventurer tier or above as part of the monthly token pack. They may also be sold elsewhere in the future.

Tokens will be limited to small or medium humanoids for now. Please include character descriptions and reference artwork when requesting the token.

This reward will be limited to 3 per Patreon in a row, to ensure that as many people as possible will be able to have a chance to get a commission, as slots will be limited. Once you have been pledged at this tier for 3 full months, you will need to change your pledge to allow someone else to sign up. You can re-pledge at this tier again in the future if you wish.

Get a custom made battlemap!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • All benefits of previous tiers.
  • After three continuous months at this tier, message me to commission your very own custom made battlemap. (Max 1 per patron in a row)
  • This battlemap will be shared with the community at a later time.
  • My eternal thanks.

Please note, to be eligible for this tier's reward, any monthly limits must be set no lower than 4x your pledge amount.

This tier is replacing the existing Archduke Tier. The primary change is the increase in price. This is to better reflect the amount of additional time required to make a custom commissioned battlemap, and also because it includes custom tokens from the Warrior tier rewards if you so wish. The higher 'Imperator' commission tier will be discontinued.

This reward will be limited to 1 per Patreon in a row, to ensure that as many people as possible will be able to have a chance to get a commission, as slots will be limited. Once you have been pledged at this tier for 3 full months, you will need to change your pledge to allow someone else to sign up. You can re-pledge at this tier again in the future if you wish.

For those who wish to give more!
Patrons at this tier will receive:

  • All rewards from the Traveller, Builder, Adventurer and Forgemaster Tiers
  • The thanks of my ancestors and all generations who follow me.

This tier is designed for those who would like to donate more to help support my work. In return, if you have any special requests or would like advice or feedback on a personal project, I will do my best to oblige.

If you have any questions about the new tier rewards, let me know!

Hi Tom. Good stuff! I purchased Foundry right after it officially released and I am really impressed with it. I am interested in the Tier that gives your maps as Foundry modules. However, I am always using your maps at a 70px (which results at something like a x2 zoom) since I really don't like the cramped map you get when you play at the "default" 5ft scale. I am guessing the foundry modules will only have walls and doors at the default 5ft scale, right? Or is there an easy way in Foundry to stretch the walls at a x2 size?
user avatar
tomcartos - 3 Aug 20 02:45
Hey Giannis, I don't currently know of a way to do that, there are some mods that help with wall adjustments that you could try like this one https://foundryvtt.com/packages/mergewalls/ If none of those work this is something you could suggest to modders like Forien to see if they can develop something. I will also ask him if he has any ideas.
user avatar
User #38035221 - 3 Aug 20 03:02
Hey Giannis! From my current understanding on FVTT, walls are saved on coordinates of image (pixels), and it shouldn't matter if you change the grid size. So simply go ahead to Scene Configuration and lower the Grid Size to 70. You might need to also set Vertical and/or Horizontal shift to -70 (negative 70). Check wall layer to be sure. If it's not perfectly aligned, add shift. I also suggest lowering Grid Distance to 2.5 ft so actual map for context of measurements and lighting is the same size (if that's what you want).

User #4755989 - 16 Sep 20 03:15
Hi Tom and Forien. It took me a month to find to test this (most of the time I didn't really need wall set-up which is the main attraction of the Foundry Modules) and I can confirm this works perfectly. I just upgraded my Tier to Forgemaster and loaded up the Iido module. Unfortunately, I am using the Forge the host online for various technical reason and loading up just the Iido module takes up close 80% of my Game Data quota. Is there a non-fiddly way to select which maps to load from the zip file?

I meant to comment on your new logo. It's perfect. Very nice. I love all the new tiers and art. And of course -- HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. Thank YOU for all that you do. Your maps are top notch. My players are still in awe of them. heh heh

Are there material differences between what is in the Roll20 asset packs, and your Patreon material? Before I found you on Patreon, I bought 7 of your clutter packs, and was wondering if I should a) bother making dungeondraft packs of them for my use, and, if yes, then specially mark them as separate from the ones as being under a different license?
user avatar
tomcartos - 27 Aug 20 22:35
Hi Arri, I think there may be one or two colour variants on Roll20 that aren't on Patreon, but in general the Roll20 packs are made from my Patreon packs, but packaged differently due to the minimum pricing on Roll20. As a patron you can use any of them under the Patron commercial licensing agreement.

I was not aware you didn't allow use of maps on streams, oh no! I always try my best to give proper credit when maps are used on stream, and have probably used a couple in our games, and definitely streamed with maps I've made using your assets. So if I understand correctly, if I want to stream Mad Mage with the maps I've made that include your assets, I have to pledge $8 a month?
user avatar
tomcartos - 4 Aug 20 02:55
Hi Midgardia, It's ok, I haven't really had any specific rules up until now, but quite a lot of people have been asking so I thought it would be best to create a set of guidelines. The commercial aspect for the assets is intended more for people selling maps with my assets on them, or for those whose streams are a primary source of income. I would be happy for you to use your custom maps with my assets on them in your streams at the $4+ level.

Frequently Asked Questions 2020-08-03T15:45:32+00:00close

You are always welcome to contact me if you have any questions about me, my Patreon page or my artwork, but some questions come up very often. Here are answers to a few of them.

  • How does Patreon work?

Rather than being a store or standard subscription model, Patreon is a way of supporting artists whose work you like. When you sign up for a tier you are pledging a certain amount of money each month to help support me so I can continue creating. In return, you get early access to all of my work, exclusive releases, input on map ideas and a discounted price.

From Patreon's official explanation:
"Patreon is a way to join your favorite creator's community and pay them for making the stuff you love....This means the creator gets paid regularly and you become a bonafide, real-life patron of the arts." More information HERE

  • How much/how often will I be charged?

You will be charged a maximum of 4x your pledge amount each month, once for each of my weekly map sets. This payment will be processed at the end of the month. For example, if you select the $3 Adventurer Tier, your account will be charged $12 at the end of the month.

I release more than 4 new creations each month, such as asset packs, token bundles, adventure PDFS, FVTT modules and my Into the Wilds maps, but these are all bonus rewards for different tiers and are not charged. Bonus rewards posts will have the following line at the bottom of them for transparency: 'You will not be charged for this post'

  • Can I buy your maps/assets instead of becoming a Patron?

Yes, I sell almost all of maps and assets on my Roll20 Marketplace. They are all downloadable so they can be used on other platforms. Currently only the 140DPI VTT versions are available, but these are high enough quality for most home printers. Artwork is usually released on Roll20 1-2 months after the release on Patreon.

  • I would like to donate some money, but I don't want to sign up for Patreon. Can I do that?

Yes! I have a Kofi page set up HERE where you can donate if you have enjoyed using my free maps or assets.

  • How do you make your maps/assets?

All of my maps and assets are drawn and coloured in Photoshop. I use a digital display tablet (Huion Kamvas Pro) connected to my laptop. A lot of my floor and wall textures come from textures.com

  • Do you take Commissions?

I am currently not taking on private commissions outside of the 'Curator' tier rewards. Keep an eye out for those when they become available. If you are a publisher please email me at tomartos.creations@gmail.com to find out my availability.

  • Can I use your maps in my streamed/recorded game?

Yes! Anyone is welcome to use the artwork they have access to in games they are streaming or posting online, whether you are a Patron or have purchased the maps/assets on Roll20. Please include a credit to me and a link to my Patreon page in the title card, description or wherever else is appropriate, and do not distribute the maps/assets or post high resolution images of them. Please see the Commercial Licensing Information page for more details.

  • I am a 'DM for hire' Can I use your maps in my paid games?

Yes! Anyone is welcome to use the artwork they have access to in games that they charge for, whether you are a Patron or have purchased the maps/assets on Roll20. Please include a credit to me and a link to my Patreon page on your website, in advertising or wherever else is appropriate, and do not distribute the maps/assets or post high resolution images of them. Please see the Commercial Licensing Information page for more details.

  • Can I use your maps/assets in my own products?

Patrons at different tier levels can use my maps and assets in their own published work, with certain restrictions and requirements. Please see the Commercial Licensing Information page for more details.

  • Can you remake the maps published in X official book/module?

Maps that are in published books and modules are the Intellectual Property of the original creators. I can't remake them for Patreon as I would be profiting from their IP. I can make maps that are in a similar style or world, but they would not be able to match the existing maps or descriptions without explicit permission from the IP holder.

  • What size is this map?

Map sizes in both grid squares and pixels are included at the bottom of each post. Print size recommendations are also included.

Let me know if you think there are any other questions that should be added to this list in the comments below.

- The Notice Board - 2020-08-03T15:45:13+00:00close

Welcome to the Tom Cartos Notice Board!

This is where you will find quick links to all of the content on my Patreon page. The standard Patreon UI is not the greatest, so hopefully this will make your lives a bit easier when searching through my back catalogue, looking for information, or checking in on the latest announcements and community engagement posts. This page is replacing the old 'Archive' post which was starting to get a bit out of hand. Links with (Tier Name+) can only be accessed by patrons of that tier or above. You can also filter by tier on the main page if you prefer to see the post header images.

I will post links to all new announcements, polls, competitions, community engagement and miscellaneous information here.

Weekly map sets and variants are available to all Patrons, and Free versions of each set are available to the public. Builder ($2) patrons and above also get access to unfurnished versions of the maps, as well as themed asset packs to customise them. Adventurer ($3) patrons and above get occasional bonus map variants. Use the following links to explore the existing library of content.

For a quick gallery overview of all of my maps, I have a Pinterest board exhibiting all of the free versions HERE

Into The Wilds

These are more generic random encounter maps for when the party is on the road, or you need something quick for an unexpected battle. Themed by region or biome.

Current themes include Rural, Forest & Desert.

Ostenwold - European Style Starter Town

This set features all of the buildings you need for your 'starter town', somewhere the intrepid heroes can safely retire to after their first taste of adventuring for some down time, shopping and role play. At least that's what you let them think...

Includes a Tavern, Blacksmith, Windmill, Garrison, Apothecary, Wizard's Tower, Church, Traders Post & Stable, Fishing Village, Farmhouse, Townhouse, Magic Shop, Brewery, Market Square and Town Map.

The Big City

After venturing out into the world, our heroes will eventually find themselves drawn towards the Big City. Whether seeking work, fame, knowledge, riches, glory or just a little retail therapy, there is something for everyone.

Includes a Museum, Library, Theatre, Sewers, Bazaar, Suburban Homes, Manor, Ruined Manor, Bank, Town Hall, Prison, Hunting Lodge, Hotel, Asylum, Colosseum, Villa & Temple.

Ancient Worlds

Every new civilisation is built upon the bones of the one that came before. Delve deep enough and you might just find some remnants of these long forgotten places. Ancient ruins, antiquated temples and abandoned kingdoms are surprisingly prevalent if you look hard enough.

Includes a Ruined Watchtower, Mountain Temple, Desert Pyramid, Archaeological Excavation, Floating Island, & Dwarven Kingdom.

Iido - Feudal Japan Inspired Town

This East Asian inspired town may at first seem like a quiet peaceful settlement, nestled between the mountains and the sea, but bubbling below the surface is a widening chasm between the townsfolk and their new Daimyo. Whispers of rebellion and the faint smell of smoke linger in the air.

Includes Peasant Home, Farmers' House, General Store, Eta Village, Samurai Home, Roadside Storehouse, Tea House, Geisha Residence, Pagoda, Daimyo's Castle & Town Map.

Distant Shores

The world is a rich and diverse place with numerous cultures and races inhabiting it. By travelling to every corner of the world and spending time amongst the different peoples that call it home, you will open your eyes and mind to countless possibilities.

Includes a Jungle Village, Ziggurat, Mud Fort & Desert Hotel. (More coming soon)

The High Seas

The world is more water than land, but much of it remains unexplored or at least unknown to most. Those lucky few who get to experience life on the seas know both the beauty and the peril that comes from such an existence.

Includes Galleon/Airship Combo. (More coming soon)

Crossing the Planes

The material plane is just one of many, and by most accounts the least interesting. Those with an inquisitive mind and daring nature may seek out the places where it crosses close enough to the other planes of existence and take the leap.

Includes The Fey Courts. (More coming soon)

Hideouts & Lairs

Whether man or beast, all creatures need a pace to rest their head. You may think that approaching them in such a place would be a good opportunity to catch them unawares, but don't forget that they will have the home advantage.

Includes a Cultists Hideout, Dark Wizards Tower, Hydra Island, & Volcanic Lair. (More coming soon)

Themed asset packs are released each week along with my map sets for Builder ($2) patrons and above. Use the links below to explore the existing library of content.

Free Assets

Paid Assets (Builder+)

Token packs are released each month for Adventurer ($3) patrons and above. Warrior ($8) patrons get the opportunity to commission a custom character token once per month. Use the links below to explore the existing library of content.

Hi William! I know I'm really sorry. I gave a heads up in the 'New Patreon Tier' post yesterday. Unfortunately Patreon doesn't let you turn off email notifications for posts. I pushed them all through in one go to get it out of the way quickly. All done now.

Hello Everyone!

I am very happy to announce 'The Temple of Hydra Island', a collaboration between Tom Cartos, Domille's Wondrous Works, Toy Tokens & AudioGoblin. This free set includes three unique maps & 4 map variants by Tom & Domille, 16 creature tokens by Azzyfree of Toy Tokens, & 2 original music tracks by Alex of AudioGoblin.

Background

At one time, the mighty Hydra terrorised huge swathes of the seven oceans at the bidding of Poseidon. However, over many centuries of being at the beck and call of the vengeful God, it became tired of being treated like an attack dog. The Hydra turned on its former master, but was not powerful enough to overcome him. As punishment Poseidon turned the Hydra to stone, to slowly be eroded away by the seas it once ruled.

To ensure anyone who might come across the stone Hydra would know of his victory, Poseidon transported one of his many Temples onto it's back. But in his careless arrogance, the magic he used tore a hole in the material realm. As a place where life honours death, the catacombs below the temple were already close to the River Styx, the boundary between the mortal world and the underworld.

Poseidon's magic opened up this gateway, allowing a portion of the River of Death to flow through the lower levels of the temple, and many creatures that hover on the border between worlds were able to break through. The Temple now lies in ruin, guarded by the creatures that survived. It is said that some treasure still lies in the chambers below, but any who dare enter must be strong of will, as the River Styx calls out, seeking to draw in any who come close.

It wouldn't break my heart if the background/story info was added to the download folders as a text/rtf/pdf/whatever file. Not just for these collaborative efforts but for your normal map releases as well.

I'm deep into reading this right now for my session this Friday and I am delightfully chuckling at all the references to treasure. I almost think Dave is expecting a band of murder hobos or thieves. ha ha ha. I love it. Most of my players are goodie two shoes, but a couple have questionable morals; looking forward to putting those to the test. You and Dave are great combo. Thanks so much to both of you.

The black obsidian tower rises sharply among the swirling sands that always seem to encompass it, shielding it from distant view. The stone steps and black columns at its base sit somewhat awkwardly, almost as though it wasn't built here, but was somehow transported to this location after it's construction.

This is the Tower of Araphel, one of the primary acolytes of the goddess of darkness. No one knows the exact origin of the tower, it has been described as existing in numerous different locations throughout recent history. The tower of the Wizard Dresden is said to have been inspired in it's design by drawings of Araphel's Tower.

On the subject of Araphel herself, there is even less information. Some books tell of her as an evil presence who seeks power and domination through perverted experiments, others that she is perfectly pleasant and content so long as she is left alone. Either way, if you should happen to stumble upon her tower, whether in the heart of the desert or on an island in the middle of the sea, turn back and leave immediately!

"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in your hair. The warm smell of colitas is rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance you see a shimmering light. Your head grows heavy and your sight grows dim. You should stop for the night."

At first you assume this tropical paradise must be a mirage, but as you get closer it is clear that it has material form. Apparently, the hotel 'Todos Santos' appears in the desert for those in need. There are already a number of guests residing here, all of whom are friendly and seem to be very happy to meet new people. There are luxurious rooms, a swimming pool, dining room, bar and even a gift shop. Grape vines growing around the building feed an on site winery that makes an intriguing sparkling pink champagne.

After spending a night or two recuperating from the journey, you go to pay your bills and be on your way, but are told "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"

Tuath-Tennen, the Ever Changing Luxury, is home to the four courts of the Archfey. At the turn of the season on the mortal plane the new lord or lady takes their place on the throne, as the building subtly transforms to reflect the personality and whims of its new inhabitants.

In Summer the Court is presided over by Nuada The Silver Handed. Though the gentlest and most even tempered of the four rulers, Nuada maintains strict decorum and proper tradition when taking the throne. Those of the Summer Court often look down on the frivolities of the other seasons.

I am very happy to announce The Cycle of Cerberus! It's finally here!

(For illustrative purposes, not a physical product)

This labor of love is the achievement of over 25 individuals working together to bring you an adventure of Herculean proportions. The funny thing is that it started as a basic idea from Kevin (Kev's Lounge) but it eventually got bigger and bigger.

A key aspect of this collaboration was the story (Adventure PDF), which was the guideline for all the creators (maps, music, papercraft, items and paperminis). The Writing team involved seven writers and it was orchestrated by Alex (TavernTales). (Higher tier patrons will know Alex from our monthly adventure releases)

This way, Kevin and Alex were team Leaders, but we also had a general project management role for this collaboration. This key role was performed by Diego (Paper Mage).

Well, we’re really proud of what we achieved, and here's what you'll get:

Adventure PDF

The Cycle of Cerberus is an adventure designed to take a group of 4 to 5 characters from 5th to 8th level. Inspired by the 12 Labors of Hercules in Greek mythology, this adaptation incorporates the classic quests, monsters, and motif of ancient myth while injecting our interpretation of the personality and flavour of the world's greatest roleplaying game. This story was written by TavernTales, Thai Williams, DM Tuz, Kraven's Keep, Simon Menanteau-Ledouble, Mike Myler, and C. A. Berlitz. It also includes a number of dynamic and evocative monster stat blocks by Tim Gonzalez that are sure to terrorize your players.

Maps

Each labor is a different challenge and there’s a map for each one, available as easy to print files, or a complete picture for your virtual table tops! These beautiful maps show off the distinct styles from TavernTales, Tom Cartos, Chibbin Grove, g0dxmode, MapGuffin, Mutenn, Mark Drummond J and Venatus Maps.

Magic Items

An adventure wouldn’t be complete without some thematic magic items for the party to keep as souvenirs (and of course to use throughout the adventure). All of these unique items were masterly crafted and illustrated by The Tavern of Trinkets.

Papercraft

If the stunning maps aren’t enough, you can bring some extra dimension to the table with the unique papercraft terrain and props designed by PMal.

Original Music

We wanted to take the immersion to the next level for this collaboration, and Adventure Music achieved just that by composing five original tracks for you to use throughout the adventure.

Characters and beasts

To accompany the characters and creatures your heroes will be meeting, there is a complete arsenal of minis for you to use, so that everyone can put a face to a name. All of the artwork for these original creatures are by Kev's Lounge, Kraven's Keep, Brave Adventures, Paper Mage, Okumarts, Printable Heroes, Paper Forge, Decapitated Markers, Chibbin Grove and Trash Mob minis. The minis come in both Printable and VTT format so you can use them at home or online!

We hope you enjoy our adventure, it has been a fantastic project to work on and we are all very happy to finally be able to share it with you. You can download all of the files using the link at the top of this post.

As a thank you for their support, this adventure has been released early for Patrons, but will be publicly available next week.

You will not be charged for this post

Hello Everyone!

I am very excited to announce this collaboration between Loot Tavern, Humperdinks Wares, Mage Armoire, The MAD Cartographer, & Tom Cartos. This pack contains a new 5e compatible race 'The Rakin', 2 subraces, 4 new items to kit them out with and battlemaps to play them on. What's more, this set is just a teaser for the upcoming adventure L’arsène’s Ludicrous Larceny!

The Rakin Overview

In secret dens beneath city streets, within the hollowed walls of castles, or amongst thick and unkempt underbrush, the Rakin reside. A reputation of chicanery, earned or not, follows a Rakin through their life, leading them to live out a scorned existence amongst other humanoids, or to isolate themselves with their kith and kin. The masked face of a Rakin is seldom accepted in humanoid society.

Wherever they scamper, be it through moonlit forests or torchlit streets, Rakin have a knack for getting themselves into comically perilous situations. They have a similar aptitude for saving their own hide, unhampered by the destruction they may leave behind. Mischief, whether it be playful, malicious, or unintentional, is the common trait that links all Rakin.

This is the Free set of this months 'Into The Wilds' maps. The Into the Wilds maps are intended to be simpler & more generic than my regular sets and are perfect to drop in for random encounters when on the road or for when the party takes an unexpected turn and you want to be prepared. Patrons can get access to high resolution versions, and extra variants HERE

Patrons voted for this months maps to be 'Forest' themed. The bundle includes:

Bear's Cave - Searching for respite from the elements, the party finds a sheltered cave below a small hillock. However they are not the only ones looking for a dry place to sleep.

Forked Path - While travelling along the woodland track, the party comes to a fork in the road. The directions they were given didn't say anything about this, and with the mist closing in they will need to decide which path to take quickly!

The Cabin - Near a small stream in the heart of the woods is a rustic log cabin. The inhabitants claim to have moved here to get away from the stresses of regular life, but you have the strange felling that they are running away from something, or someone.

Temple Ruins - The remains of an ancient, other-worldly temple deep in the forest. Nature has reclaimed much of the stonework, but the altar that sits in the centre seems untouched by the elements. Almost as if it is waiting for something.

Fae Pond - This mystical pond is the source of many local myths. Stop by at different phases of the moon and you might be lucky enough to witness strange and wonderful occurrences. Dancing lights, beautiful song, moon bows and maybe even a circle of faeries!

Clearing - After trekking through the dark woods, a break in the thick canopy is a treat! Careful though, you may not be the only one seeking a little sunlight and warmth.

Campsite - Sometimes darkness falls before you make it to the next destination. The forest is dangerous by day, but even more so by night. Just hope that those thin sheets of canvas are enough to keep you safe while you sleep!

Use the link at the top of this post to download the free versions of this map set. Patrons get access to the Print (300DPI) and Hi Res VTT (140DPI) versions of these maps in gridded and gridless format, as well as the unfurnished, stormy and mist variants.

After the release of my Ostenwold module earlier today, I have had quite a few requests for more Foundry ready Map Modules, possibly as a higher Tier Patreon reward.

I would like to see how many of you use Foundry, or are thinking of using Foundry, and if this is something you would like to see more of from me in the future.

I would really appreciate it if you can answer the poll and leave any comments or questions you may have below.

Thanks!

As I use MapTool, modules for Foundry hold no interest for me.

Do the maps still work in roll 20? By the way I love the mix of maps and assets. Will that continue if you do more modules, or will that part of your patreon decrease? You create some great stuff.

Hi David, there would be no change to existing Patreon rewards, those would all stay the same and still work on Roll20 and other platforms. The Foundry Map Modules are like Dynamic Lighting in Roll20, the walls, lights etc are all pre-set when you load them in. This would be an extra reward for those who are interested.

I'm still waiting to make the switch from roll20. Letting them work out kinks and I need more time off work to learn a new VTT system. (My players and I are excited and see amazing things)

For what it's worth I use Roll20. Are Foundry maps compatible with Roll20 usage?
user avatar
tomcartos - 27 Jun 20 18:29
Hi jeffrey, all of my maps are compatible with any VTT software. The foundry map modules are also pre-set up with dynamic lighting and a few other things to make prep easier for DMs, but that part of it only works in Foundry.

Maps are simply a background image, so they can be used everywhere, as long as you can upload image. But I guess you meant scenes. And a Scene in Foundry contains background, tiles, walls, doors, lightning, ambient sounds etc. And even if it were compatible with R20 (which for sure is not - read further), I doubt you would be able to upload entire scene to R20. So no. As for compatibility, R20 doesn't have most of Foundry's features regarding scenes. It lacks (or at least lacked last time I was playing 2 years ago): 1. Interactable doors 2. Invisible walls (can see through, can't move through) 3. Ethereal walls (can't see through, can move through 4. Directional walls (like can see and move one way, can't the other) 5. Placeable light sources (in R20 you need light tokens) 6. Placeable ambient sounds that play only for tokens in range 7. Weather effects 8. Day/night toggle with lights toggling based on "brightness level" (for example some lights turn on at night) 9. Light source tint and that's just as far as Scenes go and I'm not sure if that's even all.

After seeing your maps today, I went looking for other patreon creators who are making maps with walls and lighting ready to import into foundry. I could only find one and I didn't like the style of his maps. Hoping you do decide to go this route.

Foundry and the free map pack we got is what made me find this page and the quality of these maps are awesome. Cannot wait to use them in my campaign. Ostenwold is now the starting city for my group. :)

User #37371267 - 27 Jun 20 10:21
Quite honestly, after You start using Foundry, there is no coming back to Roll20 or FG. It's just THAT much better in every possible way while having fair business model at the same time (I don't need to explain how pathological Roll20's software-as-service is). I would suggest releasing HD versions of maps for Foundry or at least going in-between current two resolutions You provide. I think most artists use 140 DPI as HD currently, which is in-between Your 300 DPI print ones and Your Roll20-tailored 70 DPI.
user avatar
tomcartos - 27 Jun 20 14:32
Hi Necxelos, my VTT maps are all 140dpi, it's only the free ones that are 72dpi.
user avatar
User #15436485 - 27 Jun 20 01:50
I'm still using Roll 20 currently, until Foundry catches up to the features R20 has I don't see much point to switching. That and switching would take several weeks worth of moving tokens, maps, handouts etc over which is tbh a giant PITA I'm likely to avoid doing until Foundry offers something significantly better than R20s current capabilities.
user avatar
User #3425469 - 27 Jun 20 08:04
But wait.. it's Roll20 that's way behind with features...
user avatar
User #3425469 - 27 Jun 20 08:09
Also, there is a tool available to automatically import stuff from R20 to Foundry
user avatar
User #15436485 - 27 Jun 20 08:22
Now you have me curious, by "automatically import stuff" do you mean the entire campaign (maps, tokens, etc? If so that'd be a real bonus for anyone that wants to swap vtt's.
user avatar
User #3425469 - 27 Jun 20 08:59
I simply know there is a roll20 importer, as I saw it being discussed many times, though I haven't personally used it (I bailed roll20 relatively early). Better ask on Foundry's discord for details :)
user avatar
User #37371267 - 27 Jun 20 10:30
I agree with Forien. There is no Roll20 feature left that Foundry wouldn't have (and done better at that). What kind of feature are You thinking of Silveressa?
user avatar
User #15436485 - 27 Jun 20 10:41
Being able to use multiple poses for tokens really. (sitting, standing, weapon drawn etc.) my group uses roll 20's roll-able tables to upload multiple poses, then the player uses that for their token and can swap between poses by right clicking on their token and choosing their pose from a sub menu. Other than that feature and having a built in text/typing option for text based games (one of my players is deaf IRL so gaming over a mic isn't feasible) there's not much else that I really find all that great about R20. (Though I *do* like having my entire campaign on their server since it lets me log in play from any PC, and computer crashes don't nuke my campaign, but syncing up the game folder/s to G drive would solve that tbh.)
user avatar
User #3425469 - 27 Jun 20 10:55
on Foundry you can achieve that by using Wildcard tokens. Basically you provide partial path to tokens and then in token's settings you have a list of images to chose from. You can also check "random wildcard image" and when you drag Actor to the canvas, it gets random token from it's wildcard. https://foundryvtt.com/article/tokens/#wildcards As for "Other than that feature and having a built in text/typing option for text based games" I assume you mean chat? It's there. And there are even speech bubbles showing up above the tokens. And you can host Foundry on some hosting service like Digital Ocean, OVH or any other VPS/Cloud and connect to it, you do not *need* to have it on your PC. Though having it hosted is additional cost, it's less than monthly subscription to Roll20. In long term it's cheaper
user avatar
User #3425469 - 27 Jun 20 10:57
Not to mention that it's very easy to write macros what would switch between different images for tokens. If you and your players are not good enough in scripting, you could ask me for help, or on Foundry Discord (#macro-polo channel)
user avatar
User #15436485 - 27 Jun 20 13:26
That sounds awesome, you've sold me on Foundry I have to admit, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. :) If you'll indulge me one final question, how steep is the learning curve compared to R20, and how quickly can someone familiar with R20 (about 6090 hours so far) get the hang of using it? )
user avatar
tomcartos - 27 Jun 20 14:30
Hi SIlveressa, really glad to hear you're considering Foundry. I think people like Forien will be able to better answer your question about learning curve, but as a starter there is a great video playlist by Encounter Library on the basics of Foundry: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGgCMB0gYnLFWxyrCkUYwHY4vvA_yME7m and you can join the Foundry Discord here to ask more questions: https://discord.gg/MyKFtd

User #3425469 - 27 Jun 20 14:43
Yes Silveressa, as Tom said :D if you come on Foundry Discord, don't hesitate to reach me for help as well (Forien#2130), I might not be able to help with system-specific stuff for dnd and other systems I don't play, but I can help with basics about Foundry. As for learning curve. Core Foundry is very easy to learn and intuitive, especially for the dynamic lighting etc. Then you have game systems, which vary greatly, mostly due to each being community developed. But usually systems provide minimal automation, but giving you the framework to play with. And then there are modules that can expand on the core features and add more new ones (for example I develop modules like Quest Log and Unidentified Items).

Tom, in case you are wondering, I downloaded your Map pack for Foundry and came here to thank you for it. I am not YET running Foundry, though I do own it and plan to use it when its support for Pathfinder is more robust (they aren't there yet). Its 5e support, however, is "there". I currently use D20Pro, by the way - and have more than eight years. I am a monthly supporter of Heroic Maps Patreon and have been since its inception on Patreon - and for many years before that just buying off of DriveThru. Anyway, sometimes as a map creator, you wonder if your release of something for a new VTT made sense and if people are interested in your work as a result. Q; Did it work? A: Yup. Sure did.

I would love more foundry content, but I think relegating it to higher tiers might be a bit prohibitive
user avatar
tomcartos - 27 Jun 20 16:05
Hi Callum, Unfortunately creating the modules would mean more work on top of what I am already doing, so I would likely have to hire someone else to do it, or spend longer hours myself, so it would need to be at a higher tier (probably $3 or $4).

I use the Dungeon Painter Studio on Steam. I simply import maps and assets and then manually resize them one by one (it is a long thing but I do it only when I need it, a little at a time). So I will import the finished map on roll20 for dynamic lights while the sheets are on dnd beyond. It sounds complicated perhaps, but it works well for me.

Free Ostenwold Module for Foundry VTT + Competition to win a Free Foundry License! 2020-06-26T16:27:28+00:00close

Hi Everyone!

I am very excited to announce the launch of my free Ostenwold module for Foundry VTT! This module provides my Ostenwold town setting, a complete and vibrant town for use in fantasy roleplaying game systems. The module includes 60 battlemaps, covering 14 different and exciting locations in and around the town of Ostenwold. These maps are pre-configured with walls and lighting to be game-ready, so you can jump right in to use them for your next adventure. Furthermore, the module also includes a set of cross-linked Journal Entries which describe a possible storyline that could play out in Ostenwold, with descriptions of all the locations the party could encounter.

Installation

All Foundry Virtual Tabletop license owners may install this module (available in the Module browser) which provides these maps and journal entries. Once installed the content will be immediately available for use in your game sessions through the compendium packs it provides. You can find this content pack and others on the Foundry VTT website under the "Exclusive Content" section of the Systems and Modules menu: https://foundryvtt.com/packages/exclusive.

About Foundry VTT

For those of you who aren't yet familiar, Foundry Virtual Tabletop (FVTT for short) is an application built specifically for experiencing multiplayer tabletop roleplaying games with your friends and party members over the internet. FVTT works using modern web technologies where one player (the host) runs an application which hosts the game server and other players can connect using a web browser. As a "virtual tabletop", the software provides a set of digital tools which are designed to imitate and expand upon the experience of playing a game in-person with your friends. Support for character sheets, rolling dice, exploring battlemaps, and moving heroic tokens are just a few of the many features which enable this experience. Foundry Virtual Tabletop goes well beyond the basic feature set, however, with rich dynamic lighting, fog of war, audio playlists, video chat using webcams, and way more. FVTT gives you everything you need (and then some) to forge thrilling and memorable moments with your gaming group!

For more information head over to https://foundryvtt.com/ or support them at https://www.patreon.com/foundryvtt

Competition Entry

To celebrate the launch, I am running a competition on Twitter to win a Foundry VTT license. Foundry has a one-time purchase system (rather than a subscription) so this will give you access for life! To enter RT, follow and tag a friend on this post: https://twitter.com/CartosTom/status/1276542927196610560
Competition ends July 1st. For non-twitter users, my apologies, but there will be more license giveaways in the future on other platforms.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Tom

So glad you decided to work with Atropos and Foundry! It's so good software, easily moddable. I am developing modules (plugins if you want) for it, and it's super easy to mod it. For me it's currently the top VTT on the market. Core is pretty simplistic, but that is it's beauty, but when you slap in some game modules like DND5e or WFRP4e and some modules, it becomes a beast that no other VTT can fight. I'm happy for all the recognition Foundry gets <3

There's possibly a better place to ask this on the Foundry site, but while we're on the subject... I run an Exalted chronicle at the moment on Roll20, with a pretty extensive API to help with rolls and a character sheet of my own design... does Foundry have support for that kind of thing? Is it only D&D?
user avatar
tomcartos - 9 Sep 20 10:16
Hi Corin, You can do all of that in Foundry and more. Its not D&D, or even TTRPG exclusive. Lots of people already make great customised mods that you can install and the API is very accessible. If you want to learn more, the Foundry Discord is the best place to go: https://discord.gg/CGA8eR

I found out about Foundry just a couple of days after dropping a ton of cash on Fantasy Grounds. I like Fantasy Grounds, but I also see a lot of good potential in Foundry and would like to play around with it. This could be a great opportunity since I'm not in a position to purchase a second VTT license so soon! Thanks!

Is the Foundry Software a one time purchase or an Annual Subscription? I've been looking on their website and can't find anything that specifies... I might not be seeing it either if it there.

tomcartos - 29 Jun 20 00:01
Hi Michael, it's a one time purchase

This got me to become a patron after I saw it on the Foundry site. I'm doubly pleased to find your work! One question: when I imported your module, no scenes were created. Seems like I might be missing a lot of your work this way. Do you have any idea what might cause this issue? I did already have a couple of scenes created when I added yours to my my world. Any suggestions would be helpful.

User #34663940 - 5 Jul 20 16:37
Just to be clear, the import did work. I got your teleport links and journal entries, just not the scenes.

I'm running the latest version of Foundry.

Hi Audrey, the scenes are in a compendium called 'Ostenwold Maps' You just need to drag and drop them into your scenes tab to be able to activate them.
user avatar
User #34663940 - 5 Jul 20 17:37
That worked great. Thank you! As a Foundry beginner, I was not sure where to look. It might be helpful to include this basic setup info in your readme info page.

Foundry is an amazing tool. Coming from being a pro subscriber on Roll20 I could not be happier with the software; simply amazing. Combined with maps/assets of the caliber Tom is putting out and... WATCH OUT! I also wanted to point out that not only are the free maps (on FVTT) from Tom already setup with dynanmic lighting, but also doors that can be opened and shut by your players!! Sublime art with an awesome VTT makes playing a blast!
user avatar
User #7410065 - 26 Jun 20 16:33
Could have used that on roll20 when I had to setup lighting for all the maps lol great to see you working with Foundry. Now I really need to buy a license if you're with them. :)

DOWNLOAD HERE

Kaldrfjell is a Fifth Edition adventure designed for three to seven players of 5th to 7th level. It is optimized for a party of five characters with an average party level (APL) of 5. Parties with a cleric or paladin as well as those equipped with magic items will have an easier time than those without. This campaign is set in the DMDave campaign world of Omeria, but you’re free to set it anywhere that you like.

Background

Nestled among the snowy peaks of Kaldrfjell, a northwestern section of the Basilisk’s Spine Mountains, sleeps the temple that takes the mountain range’s name. It may once have had a title of its own, but if so, it is long forgotten. For centuries it was a place of pilgrimage and sanctuary for many. It was home to an entire monastic school, but now, it is occupied by a lone monk, Elder Maxim. Maxim barred shut the entire lower section of the temple due to neglect as well as a slow incursion of monstrosities from below.

One hundred years ago, when the temple still received pilgrims daily, a horde of barbarian raiders tore through the local townships. The people fled to the temple in hopes of finding safety, but were pursued by the bloodthirsty savages. Most made it inside and the gates were barred. However, this did not deter their attackers who threw themselves against the walls. All hope seemed lost until three heroes appeared from within the temple, their weapons drawn. For four days and four nights, this trio bravely fought off the barbarians until they each finally succumbed to their wounds. Their heroic sacrifice was not in vain. They decimated the horde and the few barbarians who remained fled into the mountains, never to be seen again.

The three heroes were buried within the grounds of the temple, their legendary weapons alongside them, and their names added to the stone tablets that tell the temple's history. No one now remembers exactly where the burial site was, but it is said that if another group of heroes should find themselves in need, they could seek it out and discover new strength there.

The rebellion finally comes to a head as the towns folk band together to storm the Daimyo's Castle. Lord Katamori is trapped inside with only his personal guard for protection. If Takano was captured, he will also be here, kept in the prison cells below the castle waiting for judgement, along with any others who were taken in the initial skirmishes.

Katamori's force is greatly outnumbered, but they have the advantages of superior equipment and training, the castles high walls, and knowledge of all of the secret hiding places throughout the complex.

The battle will be close, and may very well be swung by the choices made by the party. Who will they ultimately choose to side with?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the Eastern Continent, nestled among the foothills of a vast snow capped mountain range, lies the small town of Iido. The mountain's meltwater forms the start of one of the major tributaries in the area, and after passing by Iido the river runs all the way to the sea, meaning many travellers who journey inland find themselves here at one point or another. The fortified castle of the local Daimyo is only a day or so away by horseback, so many use the town as a rest stop on their way to visit the lord of the province.

Iido boasts many attractions and diversions for passing visitors, Madam Hiketsu's Tea House and Geisha Residence are known to be the finest in the region. The local Inn & Bathhouse was once the only structure at this crossroads, and the original timbers still hold up it's twin roofs. Dai-Osho Haiko maintains the shrine at the base of the five storey pagoda, the only building visible from outside the towns walls. Those lucky enough to be given permission to climb the tower can take in a vista rivalled only by the private observatory of the Daimyo's Castle.

However, the town's true beating heart is its people. Most of the citizens are of the peasant classes, simple farmers, merchants or craftsmen, but they have a strong sense of community and a joyful disposition. Even the Eta or 'Barakumin' who are tasked with societies less pleasant tasks, such as butchery, leather tanning and funerary arrangements, are better treated than in most parts of the continent, although they are still forced to live outside the town walls by law.

The new Daimyo, Lord Katamori, took power three summers ago. He was given the province as a reward for exposing a plot against the Emperor, but knows that if he is not quickly successful he will be removed, likely by force as there is some doubt about his role in the plot. Any attack on Katamori would also involve an attack on the town, as it provides the castle with almost all of its supplies. In an effort to appease the Emperor he quickly raised taxes and increased output requirements, forcing the common folk further and further into poverty and exhaustion. Their usual love for life was being quashed, but they leant on each other for support.

Recently, simmering anger has begun to bubble over and talk of rebellion can be heard whispered in the middle of the night. One of the farmers, a man named Takano, is trying to organise the others to fight back against Lord Katamori and retake the town for themselves. In an effort to improve their chances, Takano is also recruiting outsiders who are willing to help.

Katamori is aware of the resentment against him and is seeking to remove anyone who might incite an uprising in the town, offering a reward to travelling adventurers who provide information that leads to arrests. Any that seem particularly promising may be offered work as mercenaries, tasked with rooting out the rebellion entirely.

Custom Commissioned Map Competition! 2020-06-07T17:51:53+00:00close

Hello Everyone!

At the end of July I will be celebrating my first year on Patreon, and thanks to the support of all of you it has surpassed even my wildest expectations.

As a way of trying to give back, I am going to be running a competition for all Patrons to have the chance to win a custom commissioned battlemap. All you have to do to enter is be pledged as a Patron at any tier and comment on this post with a one or two line description of your map idea.

Entry will be open for the next two weeks (until Sunday June 21st), after which I will pick four entrants at random. Entries will be weighted depending on how long you have been a Patron, for example if you have been a Patron for 8 months, you will have 8 chances to win. However everyone will have the opportunity to win, regardless of how long you have been supporting me.

I will work with the winning entrants to create & deliver their maps, which will then be released to all followers throughout August.

If you see other map ideas in the comments that you think look cool, please give them a like. This will not increase their chances of winning, but I may use them as ideas for future maps.

This post will be linked to at the top of the pinned 'Archive' page, so if you need some time to think about your map idea, you can find it there later.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Tom

A noble estate in the Feywild, where a Lord and Lady of Sidhe nobility hold court.

An elegent winery and villa with an extensive and maze like wine cellar, with hidden rooms dotted throughout, which reveal the truth about the people who run it...they're vampires.

How about "Skeletons in a place you really wouldn't expect them, because of a hidden secret?" Either animated, or piled.

An elven tower inside a massive living tree. An arboreal skyscraper.

Awesome contest Tom. I would love to have a map of a Drow temple complex in the depths of the Underdark - especially if it could include some standalone props to help mapmakers bring other drow locations to life!

An old, abandoned castle on a hill, built by a long-dead paranoid tyrant, the ruined halls of which are filled with traps and treasures alike.

My idea is simple. All I want is a good battlemap I can use for the streets of Planescape's Sigil.

Cool Idea ! I would love to see a kind of dungeon which start from a butcher shop from a big city (with the front shop, the meat reserve and the a small hidden dungeon which can be a location for a cult / dark organization etc.

I'm running a Wuxia themed campaign but can't find any maps of Asian ruins. So perhaps a run down Chinese or Japanese mansion complete with ruined furniture assets: broken chairs, destroyed Chinese rugs, broken Chinese vases and statues. The assets could then be used make Asian maps that aren't just pristine towns, such as raided villages, tombs, ancient ruins, war torn palaces etc.

A gigantic magical lighthouse with stone titans holding up the light source a giant glowing crystal sending a beacon to guide the mercantile fleets of the capital safely into the port.

The Temple of the Draconic Bane/Dracana Mortis. dedicated to the proper burial and glorification of deceased dragons, this testament to Draconic ancestry boasts a Crematorium with a bound fire elemental within, Dragon-sized Morgue, a Library detailing the grand history of the dragons buried within, a Grand Hall where feasts and celebrations would be held, and deep within the catacombs, the Great Burial Chamber, where the remains of dragons are put to rest.

Lots of neat ideas here (butcher shop, trap castle and tree skyscraper are my faves but all of them are really good). I've been really looking for a BIG gothic-ish, steampunk-ish airship with lots of metal bits (specifically for use in the Avernus campaign).

One thing that is overlooked and may not be as glamorous, is to have and offer maps that are rather much more 'open', and that have environmental variations for said maps. A few rocks, a few fallen logs, some light game trails or an old overgrown road. Perehaps some ruins on the very edges of said 'open maps'?

The ancient ruins of a castle long since reclaimed by nature. Its decrepit halls echo with history long lost, and behind it's walls and deep underground lurks forgotten secrets perhaps best left unknown.

A military fort (not a castle) complete with all the supporting components like mews, smithy, mess hall, barracks, etc. for those defending this fort on the frontier.

Waterdeep Castle. Either a top down, floor by floor or an angled cut-away (I don't know the name) where it shows the room at an angle, like Mike Schley's Falling Star ship map https://www.coroflot.com/mikeschley/Board-Games-and-Battle-Maps or like the app HobByte does https://hobbyte.net/

I would love to have a map of dry ravine with trestle bridge with railroad track crossing it. I know it's not exactly standard fantasy fare, but it could work for a lot of settings.

My players are going to the Floating City of Yjae, so large obelisks and monoliths on a floating island would be an awesome map to have in my pocket.

A fort that the players can clear then take it over. Upgrade the rooms so start off with a ruin and have them pay to fix it up and make a room into a barracks, or wizards room.

Hola!

After fleeing the fight at the Inn, Takano and his closest followers head towards the Pagoda. It is the tallest structure in the town, and now the only place they are likely to find any kind of sanctuary. Dai-Osho Haiko, the head priest of the temple, allows the group in, but warns them against any enacting any violence on the grounds. When the guards catch up, they are given a similar warning and are forced to remain outside. Haiko is well respected among all of the townsfolk, and none will dare go against his orders within the temple, not even Lord Katamori. At least, not openly.

Both sides are at a stalemate, Katamori's forces can not be seen attempting to enter the 5 storey pagoda, and Takano and the other leaders of the rebellion cannot leave or will be arrested. It will now be a race to see which side can achieve their goal first, Takano's group need to leave the tower without being spotted, while Katamori's men need to gain access to the upper levels ,where they believe Takano is hiding, without being seen by the monks.

However this encounter ends, it can only lead to one outcome. A final showdown at Katamori's Castle to settle the matter once and for all.
