Some changes are coming up to the Patreon tiers and I wanted to let you all know. In the next couple of days, I'm going to adjust the Voting Tier and the Commission Bank so they line up properly with the way this Patreon now operates.
I mentioned before that my commission backlog was getting too big and it was effecting my ability to run polls quickly and deliver stories in a timely fashion. I don't want to get a backlog that's so massive that people have to wait 2-3 months (on top of waiting to bank the words!) in order to receive the stories. With the Commission Bank piling up 2000 words/paid post, people were hitting huge wordcounts very quickly.
The side effect of this is that the Voting Tier was getting the shaft, because I had less time to do original stories and polls.
In the next couple of days, I'll be making the following changes.
1. The Commission Bank tier price will go from $150 to $80, and the amount of banked words per paid post will be reduced from 2000 to 1000. This results in a small rate adjustment from 7.5 cents/word to 8 cents/word.
2. The Voting tier price will be cut in half from $10 to $5. I'm hoping this lower price will allow more members to get involved with the Voting Tier and participate in polls, giving better value for the dollar.
These changes don't affect existing pledges. The old tiers are staying around, they're just being unpublished so new backers can't join them. If you want to stay at the old Voting Tier or the old Commission Bank, you can do so. But those tiers are being unpublished, and replaced with the new versions, which are identical but with the modified prices and rewards.
Q: Will these changes cause my pledge to stop? Do I have to do anything to make sure I continue my support?
A: No. The old tiers are being unpublished and new tiers are being published to replace them, but no existing pledges will be affected in any way.
Q: But I want to stay at the old Commission Bank price of $150 and 2000 words per paid post, can I do that?
A: Yes. That tier still exists and nothing will change. However, if you stop your pledge, you will not be able to repledge to this 'retired' tier and will have to use the new version.
Q: Won't this change cause word banks to build more slowly?
A: Somewhat, but less than you think. It's less words per post, but there will be slightly more paid posts to compensate. The last few months I've had content that I wanted to make a paid post, but couldn't, because it would put me on the hook for 20000+ words in commissions just to publish it, so I ended up just putting it out for free.
Q: Is there a reason to stay pledged to the $10 version of the Voting Tier if the $5 version has the same benefits?
A: It's up to you - $10 Voting Tier pledges will be treated as two votes so you'll still get the same value for your money - $5 per vote. (In fact, the Voting Tier has always allowed people to cast multiple votes according to their pledge size.)
It's my hope that these changes will allow this Patreon to continue to function as a place where I can produce work you all enjoy, thanks to your generous support and encouragement.
