October 2020's donation goal has been met. Thank you for your support!

Hello! Thank you for using yiff.party!

We hope you enjoy using it. yiff.party operates on a non-profit basis, and as such, all the server expenses are paid by our users. We don't want to run ads or infect you with crypto miners. We depend on users like you to keep the site running, and to preserve years and terabytes of amazing content—some of which is no longer available from its original creators!

Because of the nature of the site, many users are reluctant to donate. That's OK! yiff.party was created so everyone can enjoy the content we host without any restrictions or paywalls. But if you value the service we provide, and are able to, we—and our users—would be tremendously grateful if you considered making a donation.

Donation progress for October 2020

So far, approximately $400.00 has been raised out of our target of $400.00. We're about 100% of the way there! Please note: this tracker is updated manually—don't worry if your donation doesn't show up immediately!

yiff.party's server costs are due on the last day of each month. So, we need to meet this goal before 31 October!

How to donate?

At this time, yiff.party can only accept donations in numerous cryptocurrencies. Please select a currency below to display the relevant donation address.

Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum Classic (ETC)
Litecoin (LTC)
Why can't I donate through other means (eg. PayPal)?

Due to the nature of sites like yiff.party, it is very difficult to find payment processors who will accept clients like us. If we were to accept donations via PayPal, it wouldn't take more than a day for someone to submit an abuse report and get our account frozen. Until a viable way of accepting monetary donations becomes available, cryptocurrency will remain the only option.

There are many resources available on how to purchase crypto. For Bitcoin, check out bitcoin.org's page on buying Bitcoin for a list of methods. For beginner Bitcoin users, yiff.party recommends using an escrow service such as LocalBitcoins.

And with 7 instruments to play along the way.

Definitely the longest video I've ever uploaded to the channel haha

I'm considering an 8 string with fanned frets. Seems pretty credible from my research. What do you think? Fanned/not...
user avatar
RobScallon - 24 Jul 20 22:44
Fanned frets make so much sense, especially for extended range Personally I don't go with fanned, I like the standard straight frets and the slight lack of tension on the lowest string but others feel differently, I think it's just down to personal preference

I loved seeing Rob trying to think of how he hold the sticks to show Jonas, tells him to hold it about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up the stick, then as soon as we see Rob playing he's holding it nearer the end/bottom :) I've had that kind of thing before - trying to figure out how you hold or do something that you've gotten to the stage of doing without any thought whatsoever

This is a bit niche, but I used to play shows with a local band name Joie De Vivre That's probably my second favorite midwest emo band. Maybe a lot of that comes down to actually being there at the shows and kindof knowing them let me try to find some of their stuff online haha oh man, I remember this show here they are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk0rCG9QfwQ

I like that end comment... The addition of the guitar on the kit did bring something extra and it looked like a lot of fun to play. I also like how the two of you went for different things on the monster kit and produced different sounds, all of which were nice listening. A shame you seemed to run out of time there.

So two thoughts: 1) How about getting a HRTF microphone to record the organ? It may still be difficult to fully represent it's sonic power but could help translate the spread/directionality of the organ spread throughout the building. Another thought would be a surround sound microphone, but I think a HRTF mic may be better so people can potentially hear the effect with normal headphone, rather than needing a surround sound system. 2) Following on from the above idea, once you've decided a way to record, how about an album or at least EP of essentially organ covers of some of your songs?!
user avatar
RobScallon - 10 Apr 20 23:45
1) totally, and if we were to do it again I think it would have been great to take a route like that. But we just didn't consider it at the time and Rob just had a pair of stereo mics. I also think that in order for that to work people would need to have a surround sound system in place to really get the full effect and that's not something that youtube covers or really is ever used by people watching youtube. 2) and this wa atually the original plan! I had a few original songs to throw in there and release an ep at the end of the video. Though, once we starting working we realized there's just WAY too much nuance to doing this for that to work that day. We'd have to spend hours on every song figuring out the stops and how to record it all and blah blah blah it just isn't possible without renting out that building for at lezst a ffull day. and that's just not possible

Just watched it now. Very impressive what you can get out of the pipe organ using MIDI. Despite the limitations when recording in that large space, it still sounded epic on my mixing headphones. Great selection of songs. The Mario one made me laugh and the ending was just awesome.

Hey! Been a quiet Patreon-er for a while now, but still watch all the videos. Really love the track at the end! Someone said in the comments on YouTube it sounds like Modest Mouse, which I hear - but what I hear is a Driftless Pony Club track. Get Craig in on this!

User #30645 - 29 Feb 20 15:57
By the way I think the reason the standard kind of tuning is a whole step bend is that a lot of Country/Pedal Steel players go from Sus2 chords to major chords with it. Try an open position Asus2 and use the B bender to put the open B string to a C#

Funny how you talk about all the squeaky noise and mechanical noise. The feed comes in pretty clean. You got some pretty cool sounds from that machine. I hope to see some more of you rocking this guitar. The ending with it cutting on you starting to sing random stuff made me laugh. Great video!
user avatar
RobScallon - 27 Feb 20 23:06
yea! not a whole lot of noise from the mechanism. A little bit in the song but nothing toooo crazy. Glad you liked my heartfelt lyrics ;)

Great video! Such a cool instrument! Also, where did you get that guitar with the Chicago skyline on it? I love it!
user avatar
RobScallon - 20 Mar 20 20:09
isn't it cool! yea I haven't used it in a while, its been just functioning as a painting since I shot a handful of videos with it The company Sandberg ended up gifting me it to use in a few videos a few years ago and offered a custom paint job and I wanted it to match a painting I had I really love it should use it again soon

User #998865 - 21 Mar 20 01:05
Thanks for the response! The good thing is you don't have to feel bad for not using it in a while because it still serves a great purpose as artwork on the wall. I love visiting my grandparents in northern Illinois and taking the Metra train in Chicago. Go Cubs Go!

Something I can't help but wonder: as Rob is obviously so influenced by Primus - how come guitar is the main focus rather that bass?
user avatar
RobScallon - 14 Dec 19 22:32
I just felt like I could do a lot more writing on the guitar then on the bass. On the bass I've mostly been doing my best Les claypool impression and I wanted to have my own thing. Also, I do think my 8 string is very much inspired by the Rainbow bass. A big piece of furniture with too man strings on it.

RobScallon - 14 Dec 19 22:30
Nope. When Davie is looking for bass he just says it with that much power.

This looks and sounds like a really cool session. Should be another good half hour BGM for putting on when I'm doing colour grading in the edit suite :)
user avatar
RobScallon - 14 Nov 19 02:24
back when I was doing all my editing I would look for exactly stuff like this whenever I got to that point :) half hour long songs that made it hard to know how much time had past haha

Just got myself a Ditto x2, and had been thinking that I'd go for a Whammy v5 next. But after watching this video I think I may have to look in to getting the Digitech Drop and EHX Nano POG! Edit: Nevermind. Just looked in to them and, with the prices, think they'll be a plan for the long term ;)
user avatar
RobScallon - 14 Nov 19 02:25
The drop pedal especially is amazing! changing tunings on a guitar this quickly is really useful. for my expirimental stuff, the pog is amazing. but yea, pedals are very expensive, I'm lucky that Sweetwater just gave me these

Love this so much! It's great seeing you guys work together. At one point Rob says about having ideas for adding so much to one of the songs but obviously they didn't have time, and it made me think: what about the guys doing deluxe versions of the albums either by completely re-doing the songs from scratch, taking as much time as they need, and thus flushing them out to their full potential, OR that but instead of from scratch just continuing to build on what they have but again without time constraints? I think out of the two I'd rather see the original recordings be built on, but either way... Just thought it could kinda cool.
user avatar
RobScallon - 14 Nov 19 02:30
we've talked about this alot, having First of October be the fuel to give us the foundations of songs we want to build on. Just like what we did with "Don't Go" but we just don't how to format that into a video
user avatar
RobScallon - 14 Nov 19 02:31
maybe at some poiint in the future we'll have a few albums with FOO and then can pick 15 or so songs to build a full "real" album but maybe will just stay with a single here and there who knows
user avatar
User #18468624 - 14 Nov 19 09:28
There's potential there in some form or another :) obviously it's just a matter of what inspires and, as you say, can work out well for videos. Myself, I'd be happy with just seeing behind-the-scenes style videos of you guys working out developing the ideas, playing with recording techniques or post processing or whatever... I was always one that loved getting limited edition versions of albums that had bits of footage of the bands in the studio. Sadly don't seem to get as much of that these days. Or like Dave Grohl's Sound City documentary with people talking about being in the studio cut with old studio footage... Sorry rambling.

Okay Rob, so I've known who you are for probably ten years. I've been around Nerdfighteria since the beginning, so I've watched the odd video of yours in that time when one was linked somewhere. At the time my reaction was something along the lines of 'Ugh, metal'. But my acceptance and interest in different kinds of music has grown, and so have you. I am blown away by your versatility, and your ability to share your experiences through video. A friend of mine sent me the wax cylinder recording video a few weeks ago, and I've been hooked since, watching all kinds of videos that you've made in the past few years. I really like how you put a lot of effort into the sound quality of the videos, but the videos themselves aren't always super polished, there is a lot of humanity left to help connect your audience to your personal experience. I especially like the videos where you're exploring musically, or pushing the envelope of what is possible. Things like the experiment in live reverb is an amazing feat. But somehow you keep finding the best possible people to share unusual instruments with you. Brandon is no exception, he's a tremendous musician, but also just so open and friendly and interested in sharing. So thanks I guess, for doing what you do. Please keep it up. Baroque metal for life.
user avatar
RobScallon - 14 Nov 19 02:38
That's so cool to hear Milo! Yea, nerdfighteria and that whole corner of the internet was a great introduction to this whole world to me. Everyone I've met through it have been such great teachers for me as well as great influences. I can totally understand that metal isn't for everyone. And that's a advantage, and disadvantage of doing so many genres. It's harder to grow an audience when they're not really sure what you're about. Much much thanks for the support, I very much appreciate it :) also I'm working on some cool new stuff with Brandon

Has been so so cool to see all the anticipation for the new album. I love that First of October is somewhat of a real band in that way, has actual fans and makes an album a year haha I don't want to hype it up too much but I think album 2 is a huge upgrade from album 1

Absolutely beautiful. So happy to hear another album is in the making - had been hoping it would be a reoccurring thing. Out of interest, what's the name/type of the guitar Rob is playing in this video? I imagine it's been explored in a video before but my memory is awful.
user avatar
RobScallon - 10 Oct 19 19:33
So excited to release this album! as well as I'm very excited that we've committed to First of October being a yearly thing and this is a baroque guitar, basically what a guitar was in the 1600's, we'll have a video all about it coming out later this month
user avatar
User #18468624 - 10 Oct 19 20:45
Can't wait to see the outcome for the album. Also pretty sure I saw in an Instagram story that the timer was set for 12hrs instead of the previous 10. So assuming we can possibly expect 12 tracks this time ;) The Baroque guitar looks really cool, and it (rather unsurprisingly given the period) sounds so good paired with the Theorbo. Looking forward to the vid!

User #2739739 - 30 Sep 19 14:50
Yay! First of October returns! Assuming your engineer doesn't strangle you both when you tell him you're back to do this again.

hahaha yea Rob knew this time what we were up to and we were all excited to give album 2 a go since there was no surprise element too we had a full day before to set everything up, so that was a big advantage for this time

Taking the world's largest pedalboard for a spin!
This was first all to be in the main video, but was just too long, so we figured to put all of the experimenting into its own video. What do 45 distortion pedals at once sound like? All the delay? Can you get a guitar signal through at all the board with all the pedals on?

Damn really? Well on you next visit be sure to hit us up. My team is based here www.hal5studio.com I'm sure you could put it to great use for something on your Amsterdam adventure, we went a bit overboard on gear haha. As for Amsterdam, its an interesting city for sure, bike culture works because everything is small short distance and most importantly flat. I do not think its possible to implement in all modern cities but its cool to see other places trying. As for the coffee shop, yeah common mistake amongst tourists haha. A cafe will serve you coffee, a coffeeshop will serve you anything but. I believe it comes from the days where we had to be sneaky about it. Also make sure you know that smartshops don't sell books but Mushrooms etc.

It’s nice to see an noise band play a somewhere besides a local house show for once.
user avatar
RobScallon - 8 Sep 19 17:17
I remember seeing a few noise bands way back when I was playing local shows regularly. I always assumed that it must a lot of fun to make and perform a noise show... I never found them to enjoyable to witness... This video definitely confirmed that.

User #90504 - 31 Aug 19 22:08
WHOA! In awe of the amount of coordination involved here and fascinated/perplexed/tickled by all the sounds (esp. as a non-musician music fan) and sights (all those pedalboards sure look pretty together!) Congrats Rob and team!
user avatar
RobScallon - 8 Sep 19 17:20
Thank you Jeanine! Yes, same here. The majority of the credit goes to the amazing team we had. Especially the manufacturers who had all the expertise to handle all of the nuances to a board this big.

so cool to work with everyone
user avatar
User #4690619 - 29 Aug 19 22:44
6:23 in, no signal has passed through a pedal yet ... I'm not expecting it to sound like any guitar tone I'd expect, but I have a lot of confidence in y'all's ability to make something musical happen. So ... yeah, pretty pumped!
user avatar
RobScallon - 30 Aug 19 02:31
haha we appreciate it yea, I honestly couldn't believe that it worked as well as it did I was fully prepared to learn that it's just not possible, and the video would then turn into learning why you can't get a usable guitar signal through this many pedals... but no! The signal through it is totally usable! it's not even that bad haha I think the final performance was a big success. It could have been better, but given all the things that could have gone wrong, I think we made it out pretty anyway, thanks again!
user avatar
User #4690619 - 30 Aug 19 03:08
heh - yeah, it definitely got into Andrew Huang 100-Layers-Of-FX territory when it was just "turn everything on", but the final piece was good and worked!
user avatar
User #19595983 - 4 Sep 19 09:42
Holy hell. Thats what I love about your channel. Always pushing boundaries, always original content. If you are ever over in Amsterdam and need a big studio for a video I'd love to help out!
user avatar
RobScallon - 8 Sep 19 17:28
Hey thank you! I so appreciate it. Yea, doing the bigger projects in the last year or so has been a huge and really fulfilling challenge. Also, I was just in Amsterdam! I loved it so much. It's beautiful. Also, I wish we had that same kind of bike culture where I'm from. We're getting a lot better at structuring our city for bikes but it's still nothing like Amsterdam of course. On another note I drink a lot of coffee and told a few people I was looking for a coffee shop before I realized that means something different there.

Holy crap did I take this magnificent instrument for granted when I was a student at the University of Chicago! I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. Thank you so much for somehow topping yourself yet again, Rob, and bringing the inner workings of the carillon to us! I am blown away by Joey's knowledge and talent and, as always, your enthusiasm to learn about the instrument and to give playing it a spin. Rain on the carillon was incredible!
user avatar
RobScallon - 30 Aug 19 02:34
woah! you used to go to school here? I think a lot of students here don't even know it exists. Was glad to shine a bit more light on it. And yes, Joey is amazing

Yep, moved from NY to go to grad school there in the 90s and fell in love with the city. Now I've got to get my whole family on one of those carillon tours next time we're in Hyde Park!

haha probably not very likely here Would love to have the chance to play the organ again, but anything other than music that sounds like baseball here would be a bit weird

Go, Rob, goooo! Go, Rob, gooOooo! I smiled through this entire video. Gary is such a legend! It must've been a thrill for you to learn a few tunes from him and play that iconic organ. I used to live two blocks from Wrigley on Addison and I didn't realize how much this organ is, like, in my soul, man! I was really looking forward to this video and it's everything I hoped it'd be. Thanks so much, Rob! Can't wait to share it with all my fellow Cubbie fans.
user avatar
RobScallon - 19 Jul 19 20:14
Totally! Learning the stretch from Gary is like learning how to shoot a basket from Michael Jordan haha And same here, growing up going to games here, Gary's music is a part of my childhood. I can imagine especially being from the neighborhood how recognizable that sound is. I hope that people outside of Chicago or Baseball will enjoy this video. I think it should be really fascinating regardless, but we'll see

User #4690619 - 18 Jul 19 19:16
That's delightful - why doesn't every MLB team have an organist?
user avatar
RobScallon - 19 Jul 19 20:10
Yea, filming with Gary was such a cool experience. I think it's the history at Wrigley that demands it. The field has a different feel. For a newer stadium, having prerecorded play through the speakers would be the deffault

Also, Mary is going to have a behind the scenes video come out that day too which will be fun. We filmed this pretty early on in the year and I'm excited to see that and relive this whole weird day we had filming these.

dang, I'm sorry for the hassle. Probably just taking a bit because they had to be preorders given the low expected sales on them. Usually the products are made and then shipped when they order, but in this case for limited runs they're ordered then made. so you should expect them soon. and if not, you can reach out to DFTBA and they'll be sure to give you a refund. Sorry for the wait!

You should find a theatre organ! They're insane in an entirely different way. I don't know off hand where any neat Chicago are, unfortunately. On tour I once saw an organ that had every feature Wurlitzer offered because the sales folks for Wurlitzer would bring customers around to hear it. Drums, xylophones, whistles, it was crazy. A lot of theatre organs have also gotten computerized so they can play themselves. So neat

Shot this one as well when we did Tetris.
The music in this game is surprisingly bonkers.

I know there hasn't been a ton of uploading recently, we're working on some pretty huge projects that I can't wait to share with all of you :)

Another deep dive with an expert at a very interesting instrument.
This time an instrument that you play by not touching it... what?

Also added a plug to all of you in there :)
Thank so much!

Aside from the fun guitar playing videos, my favorite videos are the in depth videos where we learn about strange instruments! Still hoping for a nyckelharpa video Rob!
user avatar
RobScallon - 18 May 19 14:32
Thanks Jesse! Yea these have been really exciting to make too. I'll put the nyckelharpa on the to-do list :) We have a few others already shot too. Pipe organ (an instrument the size of a building) A baseball stadium (interview with Wrigley field's organist) baroque guitar (what a guitar was in 1500)

This is a great look at the theremin, as well as just seeing how hard it really must be to master. Love the videos where you look at various different instruments. This one in particular though as I've always kinda felt a pull to the theremin, though I've sadly never tried one. I did do my dissertation at uni on the origins of the theremin, and attempted to build my own prototype though... it didn't go as planned sadly - it would play notes but it was inverted to how it should be. Oh well, still passed!

HA! awesome! I just sold one of these Busuyis! Well, the electric one with one neck but 2 sides. I was working on a "2 Sided guitar with one hand" technique. Let me know if you want more details because it would make for an excellent video. Also, I saw a YouTube comment from you once saying you had a blast playing one of those Ibanez Gio Micros in a guitar center once. I have one for sale if you wanna add a solid tiny guitar to your repertoire! Just message me in either case!

i really loved this song, it layers together so nicely. Out of curiosity what was the chord progression you were using? im trying to figure it out but having a hard time telling whats going on because of the 7 strings
user avatar
RobScallon - 23 Mar 19 18:59
thanks! here are the two chords it's based around and there two changes low to high on a 6 string. I only use the low b once on the last chord 0,12,11,13,12,0 12,x,11,13,12,0 0,7,6,8,7,0 7,x,6,8,7,0
user avatar
User #9455800 - 9 Mar 19 23:44
I really like how you layer it all together. I totally didnt see the second part coming, but it was pretty sweet to just sit back and enjoy the wonderful melodies and see you guys having fun there. Was that whole piece just what you came up with on the spot as you were playing?
user avatar
RobScallon - 23 Mar 19 19:00
thank you! and yea haha I wish I could see people's reaction to the ending. Having that extra challenge made this really fun. and it's mostly written, a bit of the solo section is improvised

Really interesting video ! :D How long did you train before shooting the actual video ?
user avatar
RobScallon - 20 Feb 19 22:35
the funny thing about that is the "song in an hour" videos are pretty close to the reality of making these videos sometimes haha We shot this video. So I had that as an intro to the instrument by shooting this. And then we had booked a 3 hour session for me to write and record "Theorbo Metal" and that's when I recorded that. I structured the song later on with the riffs I recorded.
user avatar
User #4690619 - 20 Feb 19 20:59
That is so cool. I actually grew up listening to a fair amount of early music, and this kinda got right in that weird part of my childhood I haven't thought about for ages.

And with more strings then ever...

Got a bunch of videos we've been working on in the last two months during our break from uploading. Really excited to get these out to you all.

This one I had to do after seeing "Introducing the Theorbo" on YouTube.
Got a lesson video with it coming out too.

This is so great on so many LEVELS...OK, that was nerdy AF. Seriously, play more NES music with this, but run it through a legit bitcrusher like BitQuest or 8 bit duck.😂

Have just listened to the whole album, and I love it! Quite a few brilliant "PFFFHAHAHAHA WUT" moments, some nice serious moments, and musically this is very strong; overall this is a very nice-sounding record bringing very good mood!!! "Band names" is the real killer, though. I feel like you two might revolutionize the world of music in a very good way. Well, you are doing it already!! Extremely glad to be your supporter, Rob.

Chorus You think you can keep me in here, you bench? You think you can keep me in here, you punk? You think you can make a fool out of me, I will demonitization You think you can keep me in here, well you're wrong You can’t put a lock over me I’m walking free with bad intentions Now I'm back on your streets I commit and what I start I end it Your system’s been breached Worst inmate you’ve ever seen And now I’m roaming free And you haven’t even started looking for me CHORUS Sarah Longfield: https://www.youtube.com/MissSmiles4U Guards Kevin Morris Sr. Simon Taylor Making of: coming soon... You think you can watch this without hitting the like ? You think you can watch this without headbanging? You think you can watch this without re watching all the other uke group videos? That was amazing ! Video and song are incredible. Insane you filmed it in a prison
user avatar
RobScallon - 11 Sep 18 09:44
Thank you so much! and yes, I'm pretty surprised we were able to film here too.

I remember thinking this at the time this video came out (and I think I probably said it in the video's comments), but I would love to see Rob and Sarah do an EP or album together. Whether it's this kind of stuff or a mix of both of their solo styles. I just imagine the outcome would be atuomatically great. Much like Rob and Andrew's album recorded in 10 hours.
user avatar
RobScallon - 19 May 19 23:11
Thanks! Sarah and I have tried a few times to put something together but for one reason or another it just never seems to ever happen.
user avatar
User #18468624 - 19 May 19 23:45
Hopefully one day. Obviously there's no rush for these things. I imagine it's rather the issue when trying to arrange collaborations with other creators whom have their own full-time agendas. Much like with Andrew, Mary, Leo, etc.

This is simply stellar. Every part of it. These videos are my first exposure to Sarah, but certainly not my last. I’m pretty sure I’ll pee myself in terror if/when I meet her in real life, though.
user avatar
RobScallon - 11 Sep 18 09:45
haha the funny thing is she is totally the opposite of this in real life. Super nice and very calm. Don't cross her though... you never know...

haha yea we got clothes from a thrift store and the set was torn down after this. Everything just had to be thrown away. It was all completely ruined.
user avatar
User #10007799 - 1 Sep 18 08:57
So much bloood!!) Amazing job and great cover. I was concerned about clothes, guitars and walls that were all in "blood". You had to clean the whole room after?)
user avatar
RobScallon - 9 Sep 18 08:48
The room was a set that was built for this and torn down afterwards. Similar to all the clothes, everything that was drenched in blood was totally ruined. Ukes and the cameras have some blood on them now, but they made it out ok other then that haha
user avatar
User #10206502 - 31 Aug 18 19:30
I guess it was inevitable the peeps in uke group were gonna die. The variation in vocal style was really effective! "Prepare to reign a thousand years" straight up gave me chills. Very cool. Was Cheryl amongst the victims? F*cking Cheryl...
user avatar
RobScallon - 31 Aug 18 22:57
Yea, we actually intially were just going to have screaming throughout just like the original. But we had very limited time and after tracking piece by piece, sarah's voice only had so much screaming left in it. So we just did a few screaming parts and wrote these others. I'm so glad we did because it's so much more interesting this way.
