I think I've mentioned this before, but the wallpapers I do every month aren't really "scripted". Going into them, I don't have any sort of plans and they're normally all made up on the fly. It gives me a chance to just let my brain wander and go "Oh yeah, that could be good". While that's nice some of the time... it can backfire on me in others. Sometimes an idea I thought would be great, isn't so great and I have no choice but to either work it until I make it better or scrap it and try again. It hasn't happened with the wallpapers yet, thankfully, but that's why I decided to try something different for August's chosen animal this month.
I sat down to do some of the character design work first. I had some rough ideas in mind and put them to canvas. I wanted to go with a very punky/skateboarder theme for this owl, that was just what I was feeling and so I stared a bunch of references and ideas until I got down the things in my head that stuck most. In the end, it was a close call for me, but I personally enjoyed the middle most Owl and that's the one that I went with. That said, if you're interested in seeing the other two designs turned into adoptables at some point, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Later, I sat down to do some thumbnail sketches of environments. I didn't want to go full out and spend too much time fleshing environments out, so I figured thumbnail sketches were the way to go since I could get my ideas down without having to put too much time into them. I had recently watched a video on an Owl Cafe in Japan and it stuck with me. Which is why I was inspired to use to backgrounds based in Japan. I love their culture and architecture, and I had a bunch of fun coming up with settings. In the end, the choice wasn't that difficult to make. The night time city just seemed to fit the character much better than any of the other thumbnails. So that's the one that I went with.
This has taken me a lot more time then when I come up with something on the fly, but I really hope that the results will be worth it in the end. I have a rough up/WIP of the wallpaper that I'll be posting up tomorrow for you guys to see. Thank you all so much for sharing in the process for me and allowing me the freedom to flex my creative muscles.
I appreciate you all!
