Hello! Thank you for using yiff.party!

We hope you enjoy using it. yiff.party operates on a non-profit basis, and as such, all the server expenses are paid by our users. We don't want to run ads or infect you with crypto miners. We depend on users like you to keep the site running, and to preserve years and terabytes of amazing content—some of which is no longer available from its original creators!

Because of the nature of the site, many users are reluctant to donate. That's OK! yiff.party was created so everyone can enjoy the content we host without any restrictions or paywalls. But if you value the service we provide, and are able to, we—and our users—would be tremendously grateful if you considered making a donation.

Donation progress for August 2020

So far, approximately $0.00 has been raised out of our target of $250.00. We're about 0% of the way there! Please note: this tracker is updated manually—don't worry if your donation doesn't show up immediately!

yiff.party's server costs are due on the last day of each month. So, we need to meet this goal before 31 August!

How to donate?

At this time, yiff.party can only accept donations in numerous cryptocurrencies. Please select a currency below to display the relevant donation address.

Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum Classic (ETC)
Litecoin (LTC)
Why can't I donate through other means (eg. PayPal)?

Due to the nature of sites like yiff.party, it is very difficult to find payment processors who will accept clients like us. If we were to accept donations via PayPal, it wouldn't take more than a day for someone to submit an abuse report and get our account frozen. Until a viable way of accepting monetary donations becomes available, cryptocurrency will remain the only option.

There are many resources available on how to purchase crypto. For Bitcoin, check out bitcoin.org's page on buying Bitcoin for a list of methods. For beginner Bitcoin users, yiff.party recommends using an escrow service such as LocalBitcoins.

Mega64 Movie Club: Dolemite Is My Name 2020-08-05T21:42:01+00:00close

Sorry for the delay on this one- lots of outages or whatever with Patreon last weekend.

It took a new movie to make us appreciate an older movie way more. Dolemite Is My Name, the story of the creation of Dolemite starring Eddie Murphy, is totally great. Let's discuss this movie and how it reminds us of the making of Mega64!

I've been watching the ones I hadn't seen before with my S/O each week. Great way to kill a few hours each week and has exposed me to a few things I wouldn't have otherwise.

My number one suggestion for an episode is Tampopo. It's directed by Juzo Itami who was later murdered by the Yakuza for his unflattering depictions of their lifestyle. This film has a small slice of that but is largely a fun, whimsical movie about how awesome food is. They called it a "ramen western" in the marketing and it is really something else. There is a Criterion, it may be on their streaming service as well.

User #26577033 - 8 Aug 20 00:40
Tampopo is one of my all time favorites!

I actually haven't watched any of these movies beforehand, but thoroughly enjoyed hearing about them each episode anyway. I've watched most of them after because of that. Pretty backwards, except for a couple movies I'd seen before your videos. Like you all mentioned, though, you've brought up a decent amount of movies I've never heard of, and would never check on my own, and made them something I'm interested in, so I get to enjoy that even if I go backwards. Hahaha And a few movies from my shelf that might be worth checking out/diving deeper in, if you're actually interested in recommendations: -Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) -Rocky (1976, Only the first one) -Total Recall (1990) -Bullitt (1968) -Suburban Commando (1991, Amazing)

With the exception of the Dolemite films and That Thing You Do! I'd seen everything discussed thus far so I just jump in to hear Mega64's collective thoughts on them. With Roger Rabbit I got jazzed about that movie and watched it right after watching the discussion. Watched the Roger Rabbit shorts they have on Disney Plus as well.

User #3575249 - 6 Aug 20 13:47
I watch or rewatch that week's movie before each episode for most of them. I didn't rewatch Love Guru or Zohan, and I never watched Stranger than Fiction or Magic Mike. I still enjoyed those episodes, but I enjoy these more when I do have those movies fresh in my mind so I have been watching along since those early ones.
user avatar
User #44781 - 6 Aug 20 14:59
I usually do watch the movie with you guys but I'm gonna skip next weeks movie. Theres no way I'm watching the prequel to 2fast2furious in my spare time.
user avatar
User #6919892 - 5 Aug 20 22:46
To answer your question, I've been watching each movie along with you guys. Its been great rewatching movies I haven't seen in a while or watching something I would have never watched or heard of on my own.

User #35653188 - 6 Aug 20 04:38
I’ll keep recommending House (1977.) It couldn’t be more of a perfect fit for movie club. Toho hired a commercial director to make a movie like Jaws in Japan. The director had his 10 year old daughter help write the film. What was made was a haunted house horror comedy film that is filled with endearing characters and every editing trick in the book. There is too much to enjoy and talk about with this film.
user avatar
User #2894534 - 6 Aug 20 20:46
I'll second this. Such a wild movie, would love to see it discussed on Movie Club.
user avatar
User #2631478 - 7 Aug 20 15:04
Agreed. They made that beanie inspired by the House cover. I would really love to see their reaction/review to Japanese 70s horror b-movie!
user avatar
User #35653188 - 8 Aug 20 00:44
Oh yea, I forgot about that. Well, even if Frank has gotten them to watch House, the movie still warrants good discussion and is highly rewatchable. I notice/appreciate something new every time.
user avatar
User #2507282 - 6 Aug 20 03:24
I hadn't watched any of the movies before hand but have started after watching Dolomite. The movie choices are so good that I want to form my own opinions first. A movie I watched recently that I would like to hear the Boyz opinion on is Howard the Duck (George Lucas' best produced movie).
user avatar
User #2435518 - 6 Aug 20 02:29
Personally, I don't watch every movie but I enjoy the episodes regardless. You should do one on Blue Velvet, any Lynch film really
user avatar
User #3758259 - 6 Aug 20 22:57
I watch all of them before watching each week's videos, have been having fun with all of them too. On that note too, I'll recommend watching more B-Movie stuff, it's more interesting knowing some of those facts you bring up with those (like in this case with Dolemite) than for more commercial ones I think.

User #38512103 - 6 Aug 20 15:26
This weeks' MC made me smile so much and I am so happy that you guys enjoyed this movie! As far as following along with your picks, I typically only give the movies I haven't seen a watch the weekend before you post. A few films I would LOVE for you guys to watch would be: Death Becomes Her, Tombstone, Eden Lake, American Psycho, It Follows, Falling Down, True Romance and Natural Born Killers!!! Love you guys and Movie Club is my favorite thing you do! :)

User #193965 - 6 Aug 20 17:50
I don't watch them, but I have seen some of the ones you've talked about before. My favourite movies are Seven Psychopaths and Hot Fuzz. I'd love to see some of your personal faves that might not necessarily overlap with the rest of the crew. Shawn picking sports movies, Rocco picking End of Eva or one of the Matrix sequels, and artsy cinematic classics by Derrick. Actually, some inside jokes would be great too. Christmas in Canaan or Still Waiting would be fun.
user avatar
User #2507693 - 6 Aug 20 08:40
This is the first movie I watched along with MMC. As for recommendations, I'll echo Blue Velvet or something Lynch in general. Another surrealist movie— albeit comedy— nightmare: After Hours (1985). It's a Scorsese film that I don't hear talked about much, but is probably my favorite. Also sticking with the surrealist theme: Barton Fink. I think the theme of artistic struggle resonates well with you guys. At any rate, looking forward to more!
user avatar
User #2894534 - 7 Aug 20 07:56
I second After Hours and Barton Fink, was just going through my collection and that was my number one Scorsese and number one Coen Bros for the Movie Club to discuss.
user avatar
User #2512811 - 6 Aug 20 17:09
If I haven't seen the movie I'll watch it before I watch the Movie Club, so thanks for making me finally get around to seeing The Prestige. I'd love to see you guys do a deep dive on The Crow, it's cheesy but earnest, serious but also really ridiculous, and has pre-Matrix vibes that I'd like to hear Rocco's take on. Also at the risk of being disappointed, I'd like to see what you guys think of Rushmore, which is my all time favorite movie,

I don't see any incentive to buy a Series X if all these games are coming to PC. Thanks for saving me $600 Microsoft.
user avatar
User #13428378 - 25 Jul 20 21:37
Personally I was never expecting them to announce the price during this thing. They are playing a game of chicken with Sony to announce the price since that was one of the (many) things that screwed them over last time

User #35886004 - 25 Jul 20 21:41
I'm actually really excited for Halo Infinite, but the showcase was underwhelming for most and I understand that. For me though, I love Phantasy Star, so I'm pretty simple minded in that if you show me something related I freak the hell out.

Quick update! 2020-07-17T20:38:56+00:00

Hey guys- some good and bad news. Bad is that we wanted to get you all the Mega64 Version 1 behind the scenes documentary here today, but it will have to be postponed until next week. It had a few tech issues and with setting up for our 64X stream tomorrow, we just ran out of time. Look for it next week.

On the good news side, the Mega64 Expo 2020 stream is tomorrow and going to rule, AND the pizza themed Summier gift package for Tier 2/3 has shipped! Many of you got them already. I included a photo of the pin included with this package- it ended up being one of our favorite enamel pins we’ve ever made and we thought it would be fun to surprise everyone with it.

That’s all for now- stay tuned for more stuff soon!

I've seen this so many times but never realized there was an extended cut. Definitley worth watching if you've seen the theatre cut before. I basically forgot the entire movie except the song...now it's pretty hard to imagine this without the cut parts, especially the gag with the theatre owner and Charlize Theron's character's plot back in PA.

Can't say I cared for the love triangle and Shades was pretty unlikeable in my opinion, but a great entertaining and fun movie nonetheless. The song writer character/actor and Liv Tyler had the stand out performances imo and the music was top notch. Love the beatles similarities you guys pointed out.

Mega64 VERSION 1 Episode 5 "Eyes Of Skull Has A Secret" (FINALE) 2020-07-10T10:14:49+00:00

Mega64 Version 1: Episode 05: "Eyes Of Skull Has A Secret" 2003 (Episode produced in late 2003- this season was originally intended for air in Summer 2003, but took too long to get done and was eventually held back for "Mega64 Version 1" DVD released in November 2004).

Written/Directed by Rocco Botte

The Version 1 FINALE. Sean has a strange vision he cannot shake, but a horrific accident leaves him outcast. Can he break out of this? And what secrets will be uncovered once he does? Next time on the final transmission of Mega64 Version 1: "Eyes Of Skull Has A Secret."

PRODUCTION NOTES:

-The plan from the beginning of Mega64's public access days was to have an episode full of random segments from Rocco, Derrick, and Shawn's video-making past thrown together in a "Warioware" style onslaught of weirdness. It was thought that this would be a mid-season "filler" episode concept, but the premise of a destroyed Mega64 system leading to it was appealing to Rocco and it all went into the finale.

-"Frogger" was one of the first segments ever filmed for Mega64, but as production on the full season progressed, it felt like it wasn't that great compared to what they filmed later. It kept being put aside until eventually it was just dumped into the last episode.

-One of the voice actors of the mysterious men at the end is Kyle Hebert, the American narrator/adult Gohan in Dragonball Z, Ryu in Street Fighter, Kamina in Gurren Lagann and more. He offered to voice the part after the Mega64 crew put a post on the internet asking for voice actors.

-Over the course of almost two decades, "Aggressive Caroling" slowly became one of Mega64's all-time most viewed videos across many platforms.

-The final scene was shot outside of Rocco, Derrick, and Shawn's old high school drama classroom- Room B5. It was the last time they visited it- in more ways than one, this episode was a goodbye.

NEXT TIME: The thrilling behind the scenes documentary of Mega64's beginnings! "Cat Pee and The Internet: The Mega64 Story Part 1" from 2003, remastered!

Wow, it's been a while since I've watch all of Version 1. Crazy how many lines I still quote from this version. I'm guessing this is the most heavy edited episode as it feels a little leaner. Also that gunshot sound effect wasn't there before... haha

If I remember right, the most recent time you guys recorded commentary for this episode, you said that the "my hearts are full" line is corny to you now, but I thought that moment was badass and hilarious the first time I saw this as a teenager haha

I highly, HIGHLY recommend "Behind the Ears", a making-of documentary about Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It's in Youtube in it's entirety. The amount of work superimposing the cartoons over the real world without the help of computers, how Bob Hoskins had to react to a character he visibly can't see, the details on the physical "reactions" that the toons have on the real world (breaking plates for example), and all sorts of good movie magic. There's details on making the toons have "realistic" lighting in the real world (done by ILM), which is something you don't think about. Imagine the movie without that lighting, it would make the characters feel very flat in real-space.

I'm so glad The Movie Club is giving me the impetus to watch movies -- I'm normally "That one friend who hasn't seen anything." Sure not all the movies are good, but I can still say I've got them under my belt! WFRR was really good in my opinion, the superposition of the toon elements and real life elements was a spectacle -- especially considering it was made in 1988. Keep up the good work, Mega64, this show is something really special!

When I was a kid they played this on TV for like the NBC movie of the week, or something, and it had the scene where Eddie gets the pig head stuck onto him, and I remember seeing this and thinking I had gone insane. The idea of deleted scenes in a movie were not something I was used to at that age, so I spent years kind of thinking I had made it all up in my head, but then like Rocco said, I'd read Roger Rabbit adaptations in comics and books, and they'd always have this scene in there. It's so bizarre.

The weird nightmare fuel for kid me from this movie was Judge Doom getting run over by the steam roller and then hopping up with weird toon eyes. I saw that on TV out of context as a young kid and any weird eye stuff in movies is kind of a quick access to my terror sector now. Thanks Zemeckis.

MEGA64 VERSION 1 Episode 4 "The Gangs Returned To Class And Became Honor Students" 2020-07-03T16:45:41+00:00close

Mega64 Version 1: Episode 04: "The Gangs Returned To Class And Became Honor Students" 2003 (Episode produced in late 2003- this season was originally intended for air in Summer 2003, but took too long to get done and was eventually held back for "Mega64 Version 1" DVD released in November 2004).

Written/Directed by Rocco Botte, Derrick Acosta, Shawn Chatfield

A representative from one of the world's biggest game companies is interested in the Mega64?! The day Dr. Poque has been waiting for has finally arrived... but what will they think about his kidnapped subjects, Rocko and Derek? And what if their current "prank war" goes a little... too far?

PRODUCTION NOTES:

-As originally written, this episode had much more of a focus on the inter-apartment story than the skits/sketches. Originally, the only skits in the episode were "River City Ransom," the fake commercials at the end, and a sketch called "Agent Smith Goes To Washington." However, when the time came to produce the entire season DVD, it was thought that the episode was a little too lacking in "fun" when compared to the other episodes- and the Agent Smith segment was a dud. The decision was made to 1) replace Agent Smith with "Super Mario Bros 2: Bloodlust," a video made pre-Mega64 for a college class, 2) add another "Shenmue" skit made from excess footage from the first time, and 3) film an all new "Tetris" skit to kick off the episode. The Tetris video was filmed completely last minute before the DVD was finished- and ended up becoming one of the most well known Mega64 videos of all time.

-This was the first episode written by all three Mega64 members.

-The premiere of this episode (at Rocco's family's house in 2003) was a disaster. Everyone was put off by the disturbing way the events wrapped up, reaching dark material the show had never showcased before. The main trio of Mega64 members loved it and didn't change anything about the story.

NEXT TIME: The Version 1 FINALE. Sean has a strange vision he cannot shake, but a horrific accident leaves him outcast. Can he break out of this? And what secrets will be uncovered once he does? Next time on the final transmission of Mega64 Version 1: "Eyes Of Skull Has A Secret."

One of my favorite movies. It wasn't as influential at the time, but I think it's a much more impactful experience to watch in 2020 than Citizen Kane or Casablanca. I don't think anything from the 50s comes close without being directed by Hitchcock

I don't know. Casablanca is still an awesome watch. Bogart and Bergman have great chemistry.

I think all three give an incredible experience, but Citizen Kane and Casablanca have been parodied/referenced to death. Sort of weakens the impact.

Mega64 Patreon Fall 2020 Gift Package 2020-06-28T03:01:33+00:00close

We're enjoying the warmth of summer's first days... as we're still locked in doors. But this has just given us more time to get your gift packages all packed up and out to you... The summer package (our pizza themed collection!) is on track, being assembled as we speak and will ship to you soon!

In the meantime, we wanted to show you the next Tier 3 gift package coming up after that. The Fall 2020 package includes the exclusive Horatio tote bag! As with a lot of our Patreon exclusive items, it's the first time we've made something like this- and we think you're going to love carrying your most valuable belongings in it.

Then we've got the Mega64 plastic water bottle- a perfect lightweight option for taking a drink with you. Both of these items will carry everything you need being out in the summer sun (with a mask on, we guess!).

As usual, Tier 3 also gets everything Tier 2 gets-- an exclusive fancy enamel pin and smaller mystery items. We won't show that stuff now but, as always, you'll want 'em.

You have until June 30 to get in on funding and stay on for 3 months to qualify for the package. Any funding after that will still do great things, unlock exclusive video stuff, and you'll just go into counting towards the package after this one. Stay tuned for more announcements and don't miss out!

*All artwork and items/plans subject to change.

**Thanks for your support!

***Love ya. Stay well.

MEGA64 VERSION 1 Episode 3: "Poque" 2020-06-26T13:00:50+00:00close

Mega64 Version 1: Episode 03: "Poque" 2003 (Episode produced in 2003, intended for air on San Diego public access that summer, but held back for "Mega64 Version 1" DVD released in November 2004).

Written/Directed by Derrick Acosta

A young hacker, inexplicably obsessed with Dr. Poque, attempts to hack the Mega64 from afar. Will the new multiplayer add-on to the system make it easier to take over? And who will win Super Dodgeball?

PRODUCTION NOTES:

-"Nuttin But A Dreamcast" and "Super Dodgeball" were some of the first segments ever filmed for Mega64, with no plan to where they would fit. They fit here, we guess!

-At the end of "Nuttin But A Dreamcast," we see a character named Hunky Krunkty, who was a leftover character from the removed "lost episode" that was deemed "too funny to cut."

-"Shenmue" was the first full sketch Mega64 ever uploaded to the internet on its own.

-"Duke Nukem Forever" is featured but wouldn't actually be released as a full game for another 8 years.

-The bun knocked off the mother's tray later in the episode went flying somewhere in the bedroom we recorded this in, but it was never found. Even when the house was moved out of, the bun was never found. Where did the bun go?

NEXT TIME: A representative from one of the world's biggest game companies is interested in the Mega64?! The day Dr. Poque has been waiting for has finally arrived... but what will they think about his kidnapped subjects, Rocko and Derek? And what if their current "prank war" goes a little... too far? The blocks fall into place in Mega64 Version 1 episode 4, "The Gangs Returned To Class And Became Honor Students!"

This was a fun episode. The reactions when Rocco dropped “Disney movie” were hilarious.

I was in the same situation as Rocco: Had never heard of this movie until I watched it in a classroom full of people who apparently loved it. Very weird.

I'm with Rocco, this is one of the most over-hyped movies I've ever seen. Saw it for the first time 4ish years ago and didn't even remember the second half until this rewatch.

Love this movie 🙏🙏🙏

It was cool to hear that Rocco & Shawn also had routine media for sick days lol. Derrick what was your sick at home movie? Mine was Like Mike 🏀 and I really don't know why.

Rocco would have liked this movie more if the swordfight was with lightsabers instead

User #2529129 - 22 Jun 20 22:33
I saw this movie in my mid 20's way after release and thought it was fun! I maybe enjoyed it a touch more than Rocco but I totally understand where he's coming from. It's a movie up my alley but I wasn't quite as taken with it as other similar movies of that era. Hey and don't worry about taking to long to summarize the movie or whatever, I put these on while I work and the longer and deep the conversation gets the better! Love this feature btw

This was such a great movie. There's just so much that is likeable about it. The characters, the setting, the low-budget theatre-play like quality to the fantasy world, the selfwareness, etc. Great discussion as well! The extra facts and behind the scenes of the movie is my favorite part of this series. Thanks guys.

The "I don't get it, it's fine" attitude is worse than someone hating a movie out right sometimes.

User #16490664 - 14 Jul 20 15:40
Have to agree with Rocco on this one. I also felt like it was nailed in my head that Princess Bride was a good movie throughout my life (funny enough no plot details were ever described to me) and once i popped it on in college, I thought it was the most "just ok" fantasy movie I've seen. Nostalgia sometimes makes us overhype and ruin expectations for a movie that would otherwise seem way better from a fresh watch.

User #11005931 - 23 Jun 20 23:45
Haven't watched this movie since I was 17, it might be time to pop it in again.

Watched 5 minutes of this episode, got curious and watched the movie and then watched the remainder of movie club. Really liked it! In general not a fan of romance movies but this way more than that. The movie is a great adventure/comedy and made me actually laugh on a lot of occasions(cant say that about many comedies). Like Derrick said the movie feels objectively good and to me it seems there was a lot of good energy on set because everybody seemingly is having a blast portraying their characters. The sword fight was epic, including the lead-up to it. And Inigo might as well be one of the greatest characters in history. Movie has a good pace with not too long of a runtime, never got dull. Great writing and acting. 4/5 shakers. Ps: I am in my 30s as I watched the movie for the first time.

I'm not surprised by Rocco's reaction: I think his comment that it doesn't do anything new reminds me of how I've felt watching older movies with as much cultural traction as this as I've gotten older as opposed to when it was new/I was younger. The movie has been influencing others since it got big, so I think for someone who is media savvy this movie is no longer your first introduction to a lot of the really fun stuff it does.

User #44781 - 28 Jun 20 18:24
This movie was wholesome and fun! good stuff
user avatar
User #32937931 - 22 Jun 20 10:19
I'm as surprised as Shawn and Derrick that Rocco didn't like it, such a fun movie in my opinion. But to each their own I guess. I could also see how Rocco's comments came off as condescending towards Shawn even though that's not how he intended it, it's hard when you're talking about someone's favourite movie.

Excited to hear you guys talk about Night of the Hunter!!

So...according to Rocco only a child could appreciate a battle of wits?
user avatar
User #2506975 - 22 Jun 20 18:19
I agree with Rocco on this one, I think it's a good kids movie but some of the praise people have for it kind of baffles me. I also think people only remember it for the first half, and not the second half which is pretty forgettable.

User #11473256 - 2 Jul 20 09:50
Heated 80s cinema discussion is what I subscribe to this Patreon for. Keep it coming. I feel Rocco tho. As a 30 year old man, this movie wasn’t made for him. Not to mention you’ve heard all the good lines and zingers already thru annoying repetition. Plus movies nowadays take from Princess Bride as inspiration so it’s not surprising it didn’t subvert Roccos expectations. Also can’t wait u til you can all be in the same room. Miss the flow and chemistry you guys had when talking about it on set.

Watched in prep for this review. 2/5. Overhyped. Probably would have enjoyed it more if I grew up with it, but whats done is done.

MEGA64 VERSION 1 Episode 2: "I Feel Asleep" 2020-06-19T09:25:25+00:00close

Mega64 Version 1: Episode 02: "I Feel Asleep," 2003 (Episode produced in 2003, intended for air on San Diego public access that summer, but held back for "Mega64 Version 1" DVD released in November 2004).

Written/Directed by Rocco Botte

The food supply is cut off, Dr. Poque has gone silent. What is going on in the apartment? Is it something to do with the mysterious roommate? Or the newcomer made of felt? And what will happen to the Mega64 once it's infected with a deadly virus...? It's time for stealth espionage action to save the day!

PRODUCTION NOTES:

-The majority of this episode was originally episode 3, but both the original episode 2 and episode 3 were considered kinda dull. Both episodes were cut up and merged into a faster paced single episode (with episode 2 stuff at the beginning, and the rest being episode 3). This brought the season of 6 episodes down to 5, thus disqualifying it later from staying on public access TV which required a minimum 6 episodes. The original cut of episode 2 was released on the "Version 1 Special Edition" DVD as a lost episode.

-This marks the first appearance of the character Marcus and the character Horatio.

-Contains the first ever use of the "Now Loading" voiceover that has become synonymous with Mega64's public game experiments. The original plan was to just write the game titles on the screen, but an entertainment lawyer (at a time where fair use rules were still extremely vague) recommended we do a voiceover instead.

-Both Metal Gear Solid segments within the episode were filmed at different grocery stores, and yet somehow both of them made national news in 2020 for two separate acts of racist facemasks within the same week (Hey, we didn't say all these notes would be fun).

NEXT TIME: He sees him in his sleep. Someone is obsessed with the defeat of a certain sinister scientist... and he'll hack anything to bring him down. Episode 3, "Poque," will reveal this juvenile threat and also show you where to find some sailors!

I appreciate the amount of effort being put into the codec setup, only for it to be broken both times by characters walking into or reaching onto each other's portraits. Wasn't sure if it was intentional or a screwup, but it got a chuckle out of me.

This week we're watching The Prestige, a mind-bending film from Christopher Nolan. Released in 2006 the film stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as two rival magicians locked in a bitter feud, sparked by one of them performing the ultimate teleportation magic trick! How does it rank compared to Nolan's other films, and how many things have WE broken while wearing fake beards ourselves?

Best one so far. Movie club has bumped the mega64 podcast off of spot no. 1 for ‘things I look forward to on a weekly basis’ Also, Shawn has more input on this one. Feels the most balanced so far.

The Prestige is my favorite Nolan film as well. Upon multiple viewings I can see the differences in Borden but I am still unsure in many cases which I think just shows how great he is living his act. The one detail that bothers me a bit about the movie is that Borden misleads Angier into telling him Tesla gave him the transported man and that was a lie, yet Tesla somehow still ended up making a transported man device for Angier. I don't understand this, it just seems incredibly convenient for Hugh Jackman. I want to write more about it in this comment section but I don't want to spoil it for others.
user avatar
User #30076177 - 28 Jun 20 11:09
I know my response is two weeks late but a thought just struck me reading this: what if Borden went to Tesla and had a clone made? They're not twins at all, there's a clone.
user avatar
User #3005197 - 28 Jun 20 11:33
Interesting... however, Borden knew that Angier went to see Tesla and was still mystified by Angier's new transported man. So if Borden had a clone from Tesla, not a brother, he would have known that Angier was using a clone from Tesla as well and wouldnt have been so curious about how Angier was doing the transported man. That's my thought.

MEGA64 VERSION 1 Episode 1: "Life Inside A Console" 2020-06-11T10:31:24+00:00close

Mega64 Version 1: Episode 01: "Life Inside A Console," 2003 (Episode produced in 2003, intended for air on San Diego public access that summer, but held back for "Mega64 Version 1" DVD released in November 2004).

Written/Directed by Derrick Acosta, Rocco Botte

The first episode. In the not too distant future, the sinister Dr. Poque reveals his twisted plan to unleash the most powerful video game console on an unsuspecting world. Fired from one of the most esteemed game development companies, Poque secretly builds a beta-testing dungeon beneath his apartment, and with the help of kidnapped test subjects Rocko and Derek, begins to test this most unpredictable machine that makes video games real in your mind.

PRODUCTION NOTES:

-The Super Mario Bros. segment of this episode was the first thing ever filmed specifically for Mega64.

-When Mega64 got a DVD distribution deal, and there was no longer a 28 minute runtime requirement as per public access rules, a "final cut" of the episode (seen here) was made to make it more high-energy and better paced. The original cut, thought to be slow and somewhat awkward, was seen for the first time in 2019's "Mega64 Begins" VHS release.

-Shot entirely on Sony DCR-TRV18E camera purchased at Sears in 2002.

-The first public screening of this episode was at "Gooncon 2004" in Las Vegas; after countless technical difficulties, the episode's pudding scene played to a house of full blown booing, which led to parts of the episode being fast-forwarded in what was considered to be a "disaster." It was advised to remove the pudding scene by attendees and the distributor- Mega64 refused and the scene stayed intact.

NEXT TIME: The Mega64, infected with a menacing virus? And who are these other dwellers within the apartment? We go deeper inside the Mega64's worlds in episode 2, "I Feel Asleep!"

Yet another IMPORTANT Patreon update! Did you choose the right tier? 2020-06-10T10:06:23+00:00

A couple updates for everyone on our Patreon. First off, we wanted to double check with everyone on our shift to the $2 Tier 1. You have to actually select the new Tier 1 to see new videos going forward. If you changed your amount to $2 a long time ago and that's it, it's not enough- you have to actually select the new Tier 1. Do it!

Anyway, into other news. We are about a day away from making the Mega64 series (Version 1, 2, and 3) available on Patreon! We're going to break them into seasons- and the first season (Version 1) begins on 6/11 for the newly rescheduled Mega64 Day 2020! Episodes will be released typically once a week, with seasonal breaks between seasons and bonus features during the breaks. For Version 1 specifically, we're going to do 2 episodes a week for the first couple weeks. Look for the first two episodes "Life Inside A Console" and "I Feel Asleep" released sometime tomorrow!

Now, how will these episodes be accessed? We're adding the Version episodes to the $10 Tier 2. We're beefing up that tier with these episodes- as well as select other releases from the Mega64 Vault. Most "Mega64 Vault" videos will be generally released on all tiers as usual, but the videos that are a little more deluxe or require some production work will be released on Tier 2. Don't forget that Tier 2 also gets you a small quarterly physical gift!

And of course, Tier 3 gets all this stuff too plus more.

That's it for now- stay tuned for the remastered episodes soon. And join us on Twitch on Thursday for streaming all day long!

Great ending line to the episode.

Great review! I recommend XXL, it does sort of retcon certain things from the first one, but its an incredibly fun movie. It has all the gratuity that someone who knows nothing about Magic Mike would expect from the movies and its a crowd-pleaser for sure, but its another one of those films that you can tell everyone who was on board was enjoying making the movie and that radiates onto the audience. Give it a chance!

Sorry, I think I accidentally deleted my first comment. My positive feedback is that I love this series. As a consumer of many movie podcasts, I am ecstatic that you guys are in on the conversation. Of course, I get your critiques about movies on the main podcast, but I love this deep dive. The structure of sprinkling in trivia while you go through a plot synopsis feels natural. Going through the plot also helps people who haven't seen the movie. Good job and keep it up!
user avatar
User #4494297 - 10 Jun 20 23:08
Now for some constructive feedback - to sound a bit more professional when talking about film (or any media for that matter), you should be using the present tense. You guys do this often but slip up sometimes. Its something I always struggle with as well, but its really best practice to use the present tense. For example, you will see a film critic say "this film *is* great" rather than "this film *was* great." When people ask for your criticism on a film, they are asking about the movie, not your experience watching the movie (unless of course you are commenting on your personal experience of watching it in a theater or seeing it in 4K). I think most people equate their time watching the movie (which was in the past) when talking about the movie. Film is forever so your critique is commenting on the movie that many will see in the future. The acting, directing, cinematography, music, and all other aspects are and will always be in the movie. In summary, I would use present tense for anything on screen and past tense for your personal physical experience or anecdotes on the actual filmmaking process (such as a director disagreeing with an actor).
user avatar
User #14564661 - 13 Jun 20 02:12
Bro it's casual not a written review in the New York Times. I get where you're coming from but let 'em talk without worrying about correct tense.
user avatar
User #4494297 - 14 Jun 20 12:28
You're totally right, its just something they can incorporate into this and their podcast. Just a small piece of advice if they want to sound more like a movie critic.

IMPORTANT!! Update for all our patrons! 2020-06-05T03:35:50+00:00

Just a quick heads up- we have created the NEW Tier 1, where the minimum is now $2 to join. A lot of you are still signed up for the old Tier 1 $1 tier, so you'll now need to leave that and join the new one to see any videos going further. Soon we will remove the original Tier 1 $1 tier. Please move to the other tiers as soon as possible.

We're sorry this took a little long- this week was pretty much heaved into the sea of unknowing by many events going on- as you can imagine. Our last week of content was delayed, as well as our Mega64 Day 2020 plans and the release of Version 1/2/3 episodes starting today. We're sorry that did not happen, but we are working hard to get you those episodes sooner rather than later- stay tuned for an update very very soon!

Thanks for being patient with us- your regularly scheduled Patreon content will start back up TOMORROW!

P.S. If you backed us for the Patreon package featuring the Mega64 Podcast vinyl album... check your mailboxes, they're on their way to you NOW!

Thanks for making me aware of how garbage the $1 tier is. As a poor student, I was honestly a bit hesitant to turn a $12 a year expense into a $24 one, but looking into it it's pretty necessary since patreon is taking like 33% of the pledge away at the $1 tier. I ended up changing all my $1 pledges with other creators into $2 ones after finding out.

Mega64 Movie Club: Stranger than Fiction 2020-05-31T09:27:45+00:00close

In 2006 Shawn saw a film that changed his life forever: the Will Ferrell comedy-drama Stranger Than Fiction! This film is about Harold, who is a mentally unstable IRS worker, and one day starts hearing narration that starts to affect his day to day life. He slowly learns he is the protagonist of a book being written by Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson). Does Shawn still like this movie? Does everyone else still think it's lame? Tune in to find out!

Next week's episode is MAGIC MIKE!

P.S. Our episode of Friendimension this week had some technical snags. It'll go up in the next couple days. Sorry about that!

Pumped for the Magic Mike talk. Soderbergh is my favorite director & it will be cool to see your guys’ take on a movie that has a lot more depth and artistic merit than it probably deserves. Wrote an essay about just the rave scene for a film site & always enjoy revisiting the flick.

2006 had some great stuff, including Casino Royale, Blood Diamond, Volver, Letters From Iwo Jima, Babel, Pan's Labyrinth, The Fountain, The Departed, The Queen, Jackass 2, Miami Vice, United 93, Slither, and one of the dumbest movies ever, Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. I feel like its not perfect; namely the ana pascal character being just so over the top and inconsistent. I'm glad you guys mentioned the love subplot being poorly executed; the "I want you" line and the amount of repetition there made me feel very uncomfortable. But besides that I had a lot of fun watching this. Dustin Hoffman's character and that scene where he finally believes Harold because of "little did he know" because he taught lectures based on "little did he know" is a highlight for me.

Upcoming Changes to the Mega64 Patreon 2020-05-26T11:41:39+00:00

There's some upcoming changes to our Patreon, the tiers and pricing, etc. There's a few tweaks coming that we had to make, so we wanted to make it all as easy as possible to understand.

Starting June 1, our $1 tier will become a $2 tier. Same stuff, but it'll require an extra buck every month. We kept this tier the absolute minimum $1 amount for years- as long as we could- but because of shifts in the way Patreon charges us, we are seeing very little of it. Changing it to $2 will help with that tremendously on our end- but on your end, it's just an extra buck. We hope that's not too big of a deal for you guys- we wanted to keep that tier as minimal-impact as possible, but we'd rather do this than make cuts anywhere else or minimize what we've been bringing to the Patreon.

We've been bringing so much new content to the Patreon lately that we're hoping nobody minds too much. There will be other changes coming soon via the Mega64 Version episodes coming to the Patreon too- stay tuned for those details soon!

Thanks as always for your understanding, and your support!

User #34501022 - 31 May 20 08:57
So will we be charged 2$ automatically starting June if we're in the 1$ tier or do we need to resubscribe? Either way, that's totally fine, you guys' content is worth that bit of extra support!

You will need to resubscribe at the $2 tier to see all future videos. We'll have an info post soon.

We were asked to do an introduction to a French show called "Next." I think this was like the French equivalent of EGM. Maybe they put this on a DVD in their magazine? Not sure. Also, what were we saying? I can't remember. This purposely crappy intro stands on its own, fortunately. Or maybe it doesn't. We don't think they ever ran this. Oh well.

This was closer to being Disney's Star Trek than being Star Wars, but like Derrick said no real distinguishing or memorable roles aboard the Palomino. The final scene was artistically interesting but just as incoherent as everything else in this movie.

Longtime fan here. Dont have a YT account so could never provide feedback. Taking this opportunity to tell you guys you mightve struck gold here. Refreshing to see a 30+ full on analysis/discussion just as yourselves(not in character). Might need to consider putting these on YT on a delayed release basis. Could potentially attract new fans. Wish you best of luck. EDIT: Needs more input from Shawn for balance.

I’m down with eating most things cold. I would so be down to give the guys a tour of my island. I’ve got a campsite that Shawn would love.

Rejected Gametap TV Commercial (Mega64 Vault) 2020-05-18T09:00:07+00:00close

Our run of TV commercials created for the video game service Gametap may carry our biggest ratio of "biggest opportunity" to "least desire to reminisce about." We had a long history with the Gametap service- when it was founded by Turner Broadcasting, we were among the first to be approached to provide video content for the service (which ultimately never happened due to disputes over ownership of the segments).

Years later, Gametap was sold to a different (French) company, who reached out to us once again in 2009- this time, to make a series of TV commercials to be aired on Adult Swim. We couldn't have been more excited for this project- we felt as though our years of doing promotional videos online had finally prepared us the big leagues: real commercials on actual TV! We were also told the president of Adult Swim would be reviewing them himself, which to us was a great foot in the door for maybe doing even more for the network in the future. We were absolutely determined to blow them away. In a fairly short timeframe, we wrote out a handful of the most insane commercial concepts ever- time travel, helicopters, clowns in a hockey rink, monsters destroying a grocery store- almost everything that has ever existed in the universe was in our pitches (and probably exploded at the end of them).

But when we submitted our ideas, only one particular concept caught their eye- a really simple one where some guy accidentally grabs a computer mouse at the same time as another guy. We thought it was (at the time) a funny, quiet "awkward" contrast to our other more explosive concepts. But the ad crew we worked with saw differently, and determined that ALL our commercials should be just like that one... essentially "awkward office moments." We couldn't believe that was the favored direction after all the effort and creativity we put into the other ideas, and it was kinda crushing. We were able to wiggle a couple of the other commercial concepts out of being inside an office, but the other two (out of four) were stuck there- the last of which was one we weren't particularly proud of.

We wrote a super quick "awkward office moment" because it was insisted upon, and just had Derrick awkwardly stare at our friend Nicole. They approved the first cut of all our other commercials, but we were told this one was simply too creepy. Nicole was one of our longtime friends so we didn't really think that way when we shot it, but watching it objectively we could see how it came off that way (especially back then at a time where we kinda weren't particularly aware of how things could be interpreted). We totally agreed and offered to recast Nicole with just one of the other guys here. However, they also insisted we replace Derrick. We couldn't get an answer why- and to this day, we don't know. But with the impending release of "Mega64 Version 3" looming and our desire to move onto finishing it growing more and more, we simply reshot it their way and moved on without ever looking back.

I still remember the first time I actually saw Mega64 was on an Adult Swim commercial, the one with Garrett in a coffin. It wouldn't be until the next year that I started following everything you guys do.

hahahaha why would they reject this i fucking love this
user avatar
User #4857044 - 18 May 20 11:51
Do you guys ever get asked about doing ads these days, or did that end back during the gametap/ubisoft era?
user avatar
mega64 - 19 May 20 01:39
We still do, but we’re a little more picky about doing them now since they take a lot of our time and we don’t rely on them as much as we used to. When something sounds cool, though, we’re in!

Is Nicole in any more recent videos? It's been a while.

The most recent one I can think of is the SNK 40th anniversary video that had her in it.

Love the behind the scenes insight you guys bring to these movies like Love Guru was supposed to appear in Austin Powers and Zohan was postponed due to 9/11. Very interesting! Nick Swardson really did steal the show, but aside from that this movie was terrible and very long

You requested other games to play, there's a Jackbox-like game called Use Your Words that you could probably have some fun with. Plus, it was made by Mega64's classic comedy ally, Brentalfloss. It is genuinely fun though, I've played it with coworkers a few times.

user avatar
User #3005197 - 11 May 20 02:52
Saw this movie in anticipation for this video on it, and your discussion doesn't even scratch the surface for how disturbing this movie was. There were just too many gross gags, animal abuse gags, and borderline racist (and vern troyer little people jokes) to redeem this movie. One good gag that got a genuine laugh out of me was seeing a young mike myers with an adult mike myers head but that's about it. This movie discussion thing is awesome! Keep em coming! One comment I have is that the "we watch it so that you don't have to" tag line is very similar to Nostalgia Critic's "I remember it, so you don't have to". I know its probably unintentional but it was like, as if Love Guru wasn't distrubing enough now I'm thinking about the Nostalgia Critic. Not sure if I'm the only one that thought this...

If you guys wanna watch something truly weird in terms of tone/acting choices, I highly recommend River's Edge. It's an 80's movie that's got zany performances from Keanu, Crispin Glover and Dennis Hopper but the subject matter is pitch black. Its on HBO Go at the moment and can be rented on Amazon Prime Video.

We were asked to contribute material to Scum and Villainy’s (the Star Wars cantina themed bar) live stream for “May The 4th Be With You” in 2020. The stream was being out together by our friends who used to make “LiningUpTV” back in the day (the guys who would wait outside the Star Wars prequels in line for months), so we were totally in support of this. We put together a few of our Star Wars themed videos, stitched together with new intros from Rocco. In true Mega64 fashion, this wasn’t ran until the stream had ended and the hosts had said goodbye.

Mega64 Vault: Gamedays 2017 Intro Video 2020-05-01T23:08:41+00:00close

This is the video intro for the Mega64 Gamedays 2017 Day 1 event (presented in direct, full HD!). This was the first year we did the California Adventure park for Day 2, and there was a lot of nervous energy around if it would work (it ended up being maybe the best one yet to that point!). We really wanted to hype everyone up a lot, so we went a little extra and made new video intros for everything- including this one styled after everyone's favorite ride, Soarin'. Typically we like to present these intro videos with crowd reactions, but when we asked Garrett to record this, his turntable fell over or something in the middle of it and he put the camera down. We now have ten full minutes of venue carpet footage we will upload at a later date.

Mega64 Vault: Panel Intro 2017 2020-04-23T22:24:33+00:00close

One of the many things we'll be sharing from the Mega64 Vault is panel intro videos from conventions. We've never really shared these online before for a lot of reasons. When we do post these kinds of videos, some of them will be original source format, but many of them will be filmed offscreen like this one. Why? Because we feel that A) they're usually better in this context, as they're designed for chaotic crowd reaction at an event, and B) It can sometimes be kind of a loophole to presenting stuff we may not normally be able to upload. That sound okay? Let us know.

This intro was played at all of Mega64's convention panels in 2017. It was quickly made last-minute as a gag for a last-minute panel early in the year, but the concept of driving the audience insane was too good to not use for the rest of the year's cons. Rocco was begged by audiences and everyone else in Mega64 to not use this intro anymore, and it was retired before Gamedays 2017.

Mega64 Vault: Incoming Transmission From Derrick (2008) 2020-04-15T08:28:59+00:00close

In 2008, we were invited to FanExpo in Toronto, Canada. It was our first convention out of the country and we were excited! However, none of us had passports. We applied for them right away, but Derrick didn't get his in time for the trip (Garrett went in his place). It was our first major event without the core trio, so we felt we had to address it somehow. We made up a story about how Derrick fell extremely ill and couldn't travel, but wanted to do a video call into the panel (this was before FaceTime was a thing). We recorded this video and played it during the panel, and all 11 people who attended LOVED it.

Patreon UPDATE! 2020-04-10T23:56:20+00:00close

Hey guys! Wanted to check in and give a quick update on the state of things.

We recently said we’re doubling down on video content for Patreon- well we’re definitely moving full speed ahead on that! We’ve recorded some brand new Friendimension episodes with all of us recorded remotely including some extra friends involved. We hit a couple snags this week with poor internet connection issues, but we expect them to start going up in the next day or two. Hoping to keep these going two episodes a week for the foreseeable future

We will also be releasing more material from the vault next week! More video content more often than ever before on our Patreon.

Last but not least- we finally got our shipment of THE MEGA64 PODCAST THE ALBUM vinyl records! We now have all of the elements of this Patreon gift package except for the USB drive, which is the last thing we’re waiting for. Once we have those (hoping very very soon) they will go out to all our patient patrons.

In the meantime we thought we would at least give the final track list for the 45- they are:

  • Lonely Horseman, The Aquabats
  • Mucho Gusto, The Aquabats
  • Ban-Off 2013, The Mega64 Boyz
  • Black Friday Mastered (OFFICIAL BLACK FRIDAY THEME SONG), The Mega64 Boyz

The record turned out great, and of course those tracks are included on the USB drive in multiple formats.

Anyway that’s all for now- stay tuned for more video content soon!

This isn't the best episode of Friendimension- it's short, the game audio barely registers, and the game SUCKS. But it was the last one recorded before our nationwide outbreak so it serves as a historical artifact in the impactful halls of human science and... yeah it has Fred Durst in it too I KNOW WHY YOU WANNA HATE ME

Look for new episodes of Friendimension shortly with better games and less viral risk!

COVID-19 Tips Video, Script To Screen (Mega64 Vault) 2020-04-03T23:40:33+00:00close

This goofy quarantine video is kind of a look at how we execute our "improv" style videos. We write up an outline and jot down what the important beats down. We try to remember those and then just turn on the camera and go from there. This particular video was a LITTLE more scripted out than usual, but we still weren't memorizing lines or anything like that. We read Derrick's outline and just turned the camera on and went. See how close we got off the top of our heads. Also notice that Shawn and Derrick switched their roles around... it was hard to decide who should sing, or who should cause mud.

Was this kind of video interesting to you? Should we do more or NAH?
