Hello! Thank you for using yiff.party!

We hope you enjoy using it. yiff.party operates on a non-profit basis, and as such, all the server expenses are paid by our users. We don't want to run ads or infect you with crypto miners. We depend on users like you to keep the site running, and to preserve years and terabytes of amazing content—some of which is no longer available from its original creators!

Because of the nature of the site, many users are reluctant to donate. That's OK! yiff.party was created so everyone can enjoy the content we host without any restrictions or paywalls. But if you value the service we provide, and are able to, we—and our users—would be tremendously grateful if you considered making a donation.

Donation progress for February 2020

So far, approximately $0.00 has been raised out of our target of $250.00. We're about 0% of the way there! Please note: this tracker is updated manually—don't worry if your donation doesn't show up immediately!

yiff.party's server costs are due on the last day of each month. So, we need to meet this goal before 29 February!

How to donate?

At this time, yiff.party can only accept donations in numerous cryptocurrencies. Please select a currency below to display the relevant donation address.

Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum Classic (ETC)
Litecoin (LTC)
Why can't I donate through other means (eg. PayPal)?

Due to the nature of sites like yiff.party, it is very difficult to find payment processors who will accept clients like us. If we were to accept donations via PayPal, it wouldn't take more than a day for someone to submit an abuse report and get our account frozen. Until a viable way of accepting monetary donations becomes available, cryptocurrency will remain the only option.

There are many resources available on how to purchase crypto. For Bitcoin, check out bitcoin.org's page on buying Bitcoin for a list of methods. For beginner Bitcoin users, yiff.party recommends using an escrow service such as LocalBitcoins.

I'm going to guess not, but I do personally enjoy seeing the calories of what I buy. There's certainly been a few items I've put back down when I saw the insanely high calorie count on them.

We've been talking a lot about meat consumption and its effect on our health. New studies indicate that meat may not be as bad for us as we've been told. But this is controversial. So, how do we talk about new findings that contradict what we thought we knew? We've got some questions you can ask to better understand new data.

Food Stamps, Hunger, and How Nutrition Assistance Works 2019-11-27T14:07:54+00:00close

There is a lot of evidence that not getting enough to eat has a negative effect on health and well-being. So, what are we going to do about it. Today, we're talking about some programs that work to help people get the nutrition they need to survive and thrive. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program, or SNAP (also known as food stamps) is one of the best known programs, but it isn't the only one.

We're very clearly in favor of vaccines here at Healthcare Triage, because they save a LOT of lives. It turns out, the measles vaccine was doing more than we previously thought. Getting infected with measles doesn't only make you sick, and carry a risk of death, it can also wipe out pre-existing immunity to other illnesses, making you more susceptible to other infections.

Going Hungry is not Great for your Health 2019-11-05T22:01:44+00:00close

About 50 million people in the United States don't have access to enough food to support a healthy lifestyle. The technical term for this is food insecurity, and over 40% of people in the United States will experience it during their adult lives. This pervasive problem has a lot of associated health effects, too.

We spend a lot of money on social programs. Studies indicate that a lot of those programs work to improve health outcomes for people who receive the benefits. So, does that social spending reduce healthcare costs? Not really. But cutting social spending doesn't help with health. As usual, it's complicated, but there's a lot of evidence these programs are doing good. Spending is worth it sometimes.

From DNA to Diagnosis 2019-10-02T16:54:42+00:00

Aaron talks to Dr. Tatiana Foroud about her career and her current work in genetics and genomics. Her work spans from the early days of searching for DNA markers for rare disorders to today's search for genetic causes and potential treatments around Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Foroud's career relates a story about how the technology and techniques have developed over decades, and how these breakthroughs could lead to new treatments. We'll also get into the explosion in home genetic testing, and how this trend has changed public perception of genetic testing and treatments.

The Healthcare Triage podcast is sponsored by Indiana University School of Medicine whose mission is to advance health in the state of Indiana and beyond by promoting innovation and excellence in education, research and patient care.

IU School of Medicine is leading Indiana University's first grand challenge, the Precision Health Initiative, with bold goals to cure multiple myeloma, triple negative breast cancer and childhood sarcoma and prevent type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

There are a surprising number of treatments that get accepted into mainstream care, and covered by insurance, despite the fact that there is little evidence that they work. There's even evidence that some of these treatments may be harmful! So, how do treatments like these become the norm?

There's even evidence that some of these treatments may be harmful! So, how do treatments like these become the norm? Drinking Alcohol During Pregnancy 2019-09-17T14:35:27+00:00close

Drinking during pregnancy is roundly frowned upon, for good reason. It's a huge risk factor for lots of post-natal problems. But prevention can be counter intuitive. Strong prohibitions and punitive measures for pregnant women who drink mostly just have the effect of driving women away from prenatal care. We look at the literature.

GMOs. Vaccines. Death Panels. There are a lot of "beliefs" circulating about a wide variety of health policy issues. Luckily, these are all pretty well researched areas. Thanks to thorough investigations, we can conclude with certainty that vaccines are safe and effective, that GMOs are generally safe, and that the Affordable Care Act was not intended to execute any old people. But here's a funny thing about these beliefs: telling people the facts about these things doesn't convince them to change their mind. It turns out, the people who hold to these ideas most stridently are the least knowledgeable about science, but BELIEVE they are the most knowledgeable about these subjects. Let's talk about Dunning-Kruger and the paradox of incompetence.

This makes me want to cry. I never personally needed to use PP's services because I have amazing parents who got me on birth control as soon as I became sexually active as a teen, and I have never had a gap in health insurance since. HOWEVER. Some of my closest friends have had either (a) controlling religiously conservative parents who withheld sexual health care or (b) lack of access to health insurance for financial reasons. And when these friends needed care most, PP was there. I have driven friends to PP after pregnancy scares, or to explore new birth control options, or just for a basic physical. PP has always treated my friends with respect, compassion, and professionalism, ESPECIALLY when those friends were in the midst of a crisis. This is way too long for a Patreon comment, but God. This makes me so upset, so angry.

There are many, many factors that contribute to high drug prices. Regulating them is complicated. It turns out, expensive drugs are often expensive because they're hard to replicate. We try to shed some light on the situation. Special thanks to Austin Frakt. Nutrition Studies Are Just Terrible 2019-07-31T18:48:16+00:00close

Nutrition studies are really, really bad a lot of the time. Sometimes researchers don't do careful work, and the systems in place don't always prevent weak research from being published. Add that to the fact that media outlets tend to overblow stories about food and cancer, and it's a recipe for research disaster.

Residency and the 80 Hour Work Week 2019-07-19T21:24:53+00:00close

Performative overwork is more and more common in the United States, and long hours have long been the norm in medicine. During residency, doctors have traditionally been asked to work for up to 100 hours per week. A rule in 2003 capped residents hours at 80 hours per week. Older docs claim this practice skimps on training, and might be worse for patients. A new study indicates that there is no discernable reduction in quality of care across a number of metrics. Maybe the good old days weren't so great.

Sunscreen Needs Some Safety Evaluation 2019-07-02T13:06:01+00:00close

Skin cancer is a big problem. Sunscreen can help protect your skin. All this is very well known. It turns out, though, that the active ingredients in sunscreen can get into peoples' bloodstreams in pretty high concentrations. And the effects of sunscreen on the environment isn't well studied. While sunscreen probably is safe for human use, and might be bad for the environment, we should still look closely at the products we're using to protect ourselves.

HEY! You! Patron! A special thanks for making today's unmonetizable video possible.

Lots of gun safety advocates focus on regulating the sale and transfer of firearms. Another area that could yield gains is gun storage. How safely weapons are stored is a big factor, especially when it comes to keeping kids safe. Secure storage and locks can do a lot.

Zoning Rules Can Keep People in Bad Neighborhoods 2019-06-17T20:29:51+00:00close

We’ve talked about how housing is important for health. We’ve talked about how we can improve access to housing through stimulation of production through the LIHTC. We’ve talked about how we can improve access through vouchers and mobility programs. There’s one more thing we’d like to discuss: Inclusionary zoning. Zoning rules are important for making neighborhoods and municipalities function smoothly, but they can also be written in ways that keep low-income residents from moving to certain neighborhoods.

David Tuller, a lecturer in UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and Graduate School of Journalism, wrote about this recently in a policy brief at Health Affairs. It’s also the topic of this week’s HCT.

Housing Vouchers and Neighborhood Mobility 2019-06-10T16:32:22+00:00close

We’re talking about housing for four weeks, thanks to the support of the RWJF! The Low Income Housing Tax Credit (last week’s episode topic) stimulates production in order to increase the supply of affordable housing available to poorer people in the United States. But there’s another way to tackle our housing problem, and that’s by targeting /demand/ by giving people vouchers to help them pay for housing and assisting them to move to higher opportunity neighborhoods. While helping people with their rent can be helpful, the real benefits start to accrue when people move to neighborhoods with more opportunity. Vouchers alone don't insure that outcome.

Rebecca Gale wrote about this in a recent Health Affairs Policy Brief. It’s also the topic of this week’s HCT.

We’re talking about housing for four weeks, thanks to the support of the RWJF! In the last episode, we introduced you to the pathways by which we might think about improving housing for low-income individuals. Today we’re going to get specific.

One policy which focuses on affordability is the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. TR Goldman wrote a great policy brief about it in Health Affairs. It’s also the topic of this week’s HCT.

Over the last year, we at Healthcare Triage have taken some deep dives into issues of health policy, especially those that touch on social determinants of health and health equity. The episodes that do so are a bit longer than usual. They look a little different. They also come to you thanks to the support of the RWJF, which has generously supported their creation. We’re excited about this opportunity to really dig in, and we hope you will be, too.

For the next four weeks, we’re going to talk about housing. Framing and introducing the issue is the topic of this week’s Healthcare Triage.

Aaron Becomes a Medical Tourist after a Monkey Mugging 2019-05-14T15:12:38+00:00close

When Aaron went to Malaysia to learn about medical tourism, he became a medical tourist himself after he was mugged by a monkey. The monkey stole Aaron's glasses, and he had to have new ones made. It turned out to be pretty easy! Malaysia and many other countries actually encourage people from outside their countries to travel there for care. While it's probably not worth traveling internationally just to save on eyeglasses, there are a lot of arguments in favor of the practice generally. Aaron tells the story of his monkey encounter, and looks at the pros and cons of medical tourism.

Doctors' White Coats Can Host a Lot of Bacteria 2019-05-06T20:26:34+00:00close

For a lot of doctors and patients, the physician's traditional white coat is a big part of a doctor's identity, and contributes to their authority. Those white coats can also spread disease! It turns out, fabrics in doctors coats can be a breeding ground for bacteria, and they probably don't get cleaned often enough.

The Caregiver Gap 2019-04-30T14:04:08+00:00close

The US healthcare system has a huge gap. A lot of care giving isn't covered, and it falls on families and friends to pick up the slack. It can take a lot of time and help to make it through an illness, and there isn't much coverage for that assistance. We look at several patient experiences with serious illness and the toll it takes.

A brand new study indicates that where you live in a time zone can reduce how much you sleep, and have general negative impact on health. So, do we actually need time zones?
