Hello! Thank you for using yiff.party!

We hope you enjoy using it. yiff.party operates on a non-profit basis, and as such, all the server expenses are paid by our users. We don't want to run ads or infect you with crypto miners. We depend on users like you to keep the site running, and to preserve years and terabytes of amazing content—some of which is no longer available from its original creators!

Because of the nature of the site, many users are reluctant to donate. That's OK! yiff.party was created so everyone can enjoy the content we host without any restrictions or paywalls. But if you value the service we provide, and are able to, we—and our users—would be tremendously grateful if you considered making a donation.

Donation progress for October 2020

So far, approximately $400.00 has been raised out of our target of $400.00. We're about 100% of the way there! Please note: this tracker is updated manually—don't worry if your donation doesn't show up immediately!

yiff.party's server costs are due on the last day of each month. So, we need to meet this goal before 31 October!

How to donate?

At this time, yiff.party can only accept donations in numerous cryptocurrencies. Please select a currency below to display the relevant donation address.

Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Ethereum (ETH)
Ethereum Classic (ETC)
Litecoin (LTC)
Why can't I donate through other means (eg. PayPal)?

Due to the nature of sites like yiff.party, it is very difficult to find payment processors who will accept clients like us. If we were to accept donations via PayPal, it wouldn't take more than a day for someone to submit an abuse report and get our account frozen. Until a viable way of accepting monetary donations becomes available, cryptocurrency will remain the only option.

There are many resources available on how to purchase crypto. For Bitcoin, check out bitcoin.org's page on buying Bitcoin for a list of methods. For beginner Bitcoin users, yiff.party recommends using an escrow service such as LocalBitcoins.

Vote on the next core video! 2020-10-16T14:05:17+00:00

So as I mentioned in the monthly updates, I *did* have a core video planned after the 'Super Mario' Things of Interest episode, but since it required something to be shipped from the US, I'm going to postpone it until I receive the materials I need.

In the meantime, I'm going to tackle one of the smaller core video topics from my stash of ideas, and you'll get to vote on what I should do next! The poll will end after this weekend.

With that out of the way, your three choices are...

UPDATE 2: Updated the video link with new info!

UPDATE: I have learnt of some new info that will probably end up being crucial to mention in this video! This preview will stay available for all of you but I'll be updating the final video later.

There hasn't been something that's THIS befitting of the 'Things of Interest' name, I'll just say that.

By the way, I might be doing a Patreon poll for the next video topic soon, so stay tuned for that as well!

September 2020 Report (plus a Q&A?) 2020-09-30T06:16:55+00:00

Happy Halloween! ...oh wait.

To start this monthly report off with, I want to once again thank all the new patrons that have joined in this month! While Patreon-exclusive content isn't something I'm planning on doing often outside of early access and sneak peeks of videos, I'm still happy that many of you enjoy my work so much to give it support.

While I'm probably a little busy worrying about increasing academic work (plus declaring my graduation thesis) as you're reading this, I still got a bunch of updates!

The 3DS AR Games

The core video about the 3DS AR Games released this month! I definitely think that this is some of my best work so far...and not just because it's the longest core video yet. :P It definitely ticks all the boxes of what I strive for with my core videos: a fresh look at an obscure or nostalgic topic, and a nice balance of information and comedy (though I prefer more of the former myself). And thank you to those who submitted pictures for the Star Pics section!

Seeing the reception of this video, I'm feeling a lot more confident about the future core video topics I have in my plans, but more on that in a bit!

3D Challenge Showcase

Now the next immediate video I was working on would be the next Things of Interest video (that I briefly teased in the AR Games video)...but I'm also working on another smaller video as well! For those who didn't or couldn't check out the recent updates I posted in my Discord server, I've partnered up with the folks at the preservation group Forest of Illusion to create a small video showcasing a newly-preserved 3DS tech demo called 3D Challenge, dating all the way back to 2010! It's possibly one of the earliest pieces of 3DS software ever made, so it's absolutely fascinating to a 3DS nut like myself. The video is already in the editing bay at the moment, but I'm also waiting on some additional footage and voiceover work as well, so I can't provide an estimate release time just yet.

While this video won't be released as an early access on Patreon as it will be coordinated with a dump release by Forest of Illusion, I may be sharing occasional WIP shots in my Discord server as the video gets closer to completion, so stay tuned!

The next Things of Interest...

Okay, so I'm guessing that teaser pic I posted in last month's report probably isn't enough. So......

Yes, the script is being worked on and is like 85% done, I'm just particularly a bit more busy this week to find time, especially with that other video in the works. :p

And the next core video...

I dropped a super early hint for my next planned core video topic in last month's report. However, it occurred to me that while I could begin working on the script for it, I would need to wait for something to be shipped to me from the US for footage-taking, and considering the state of the world at the moment, I'd rather not have shipping issues delay production. one lol

I'm currently looking into other smaller topic alternatives for core videos from the list I have, and if I have multiple in mind, I might even do a Patreon poll to vote on the next topic, so stay tuned!

Q&A

Actually, since we're here, why not do a small Q&A session? Feel free to drop some questions in the comments below, the topics can be anything from video games to daily life, and as long it's not overly personal I should be able to answer them in a follow-up post! I'm totally not stealing this idea from a certain other creator that I'm currently pledging to.

That's it for updates. I'll try not to have academic work fully occupy my time on videos as they become more and more prevalent, but I definitely can't help but worry sometimes since it's my final year of studies in university, and the seriousness of my work is beginning to ramp up. So thank you for understanding! As it currently stands, the two videos I'm working on right now should be on schedule, so I hope you look forward to them. :)

August 2020 Report (+ taking suggestions!) 2020-08-30T15:19:32+00:00

Alright, doing this a little early because I'm taking suggestions for things related to the AR Games core video! More info later on. This month, I finally finished the script for it, but if you missed my previous update post, I had to send in my computer to get fixed due to a battery issue. Fortunately, that's now done, and hopefully I can finish things up in September. These big core videos take quite a lot outta me, don't they lol

Graceful Explosion Machine & Physical Indies | Things of Interest

This month, I released a Things of Interest video for a physical release of Graceful Explosion Machine, courtesy of Super Rare Games! I've mentioned previously that I don't necessarily like just doing standard review videos of games, so this is kind of an example of how I'd approach this kind of video, by tying it to a more interesting aspect, in this case the actual physical release itself, the bonus contents it contains, as well as the significance of physical releases in general to indie developers and game preservation. Even though the video wasn't necessarily the most widespread due to a more specific and niche topic, I think it was decent experience on how to do videos of this nature! Feel free to let me know how I did with this one.

3DS AR Games

Okay we're almost at the home stretch with this one. I noticed a bunch of 3DS-related posts blowing up on Twitter this month and figured that nostalgia for the thing is definitely starting to show, which might be the perfect time for this topic to finally be explored lol

I really liked how this script turned out and definitely want to make this one of the best core videos so far. It'll explore not just the built-in AR Games, but also touch upon the rest of the AR support on the 3DS, showcase some notable titles, and see the legacy that it left on the development of augmented reality, even though most people don't seem to remember it too much nowadays!

While I'm preparing to record footage for it soon, I might not be able to do a livestream of the recording session for Sneak Peeker patrons this time around, due to the amount of specific scenes I have to capture, as well as the larger play environment needed for AR Games. However, I would love to hear some suggestions from all of you regarding photo ideas!

If you don't remember, the base AR Games contain different photo tools for taking AR photos with different Nintendo characters, including Miis and six other characters: Mr. AR (the AR Games mascot), Mario, Toon Link, Kirby, Samus, and Pikmin. I'm looking for suggestions of what interesting situations I can capture with these character combinations to showcase in the core video! Each of them can be freely oriented, with different sizes and poses available, so if you need a refresher, feel free to dig up your 3DS and check them out. If you're feeling really ambitious, you can also just take photos of them yourself and submit ones that you find interesting directly to me, through Patreon or the Discord channels!

I would also appreciate photo ideas or submissions for the Photos with Mario/Photos with Animal Crossing/Photos with Pikmin apps, if some folks out there remember them! (They're basically the same thing but with animated versions of characters instead) Hopefully I can share more updates on WIPs soon!

Upcoming Plans

Also, I think I have the subjects for both the next Things of Interest video and core video planned out! I actually briefly teased the TOI subject in last month's report, but uh, here's a teaser pic.

...I'll leave it at that.

As for the next core video after AR Games, it'll be something of a smaller scale since I like to alternate between big and small topics (so things like Mario no Photopi or the Virtual Boy sequel video will have to wait). But I'll drop an early hint for now: it's not related to any Nintendo platform.

I'm starting my university semester next month, but I'm going to make the most of the early time I've got to work on videos, since all of these upcoming topics are ones I'm SUPER excited to tackle. Catch ya guys soon for more updates!

Oh and uh, if you missed it, I did a WarioWare D.I.Y. music cover while my computer was being fixed. So there's that! Go play Bug Fables, it's really good.

Core video production update 2020-08-21T12:04:35+00:00

Hey! So the script for the next core video about the 3DS AR Games was just finished, and it's pretty meaty. I really liked how it turned out, and I can't wait to show more bits of it off as I work on it!

However, today I finally noticed a problem with my current daily driver MacBook...it's got a swollen battery. So uh, that's fun. It'll take me around a week to get that sorted out, and in the meantime I'll probably have to be extra cautious around using it until I can get a new replacement battery. So until then, I may not be able to do more intensive tasks like capturing game footage and voice recording, since this computer is basically the one I do *everything* on. Don't worry though, in the worst case scenario, I at least have everything important backed up.

So uh, catch you guys when this situation resolves!

I don't normally just do videos where I review 'the hottest gaming products & topics' since I try to find unique perspectives for each core video I make if the topic's been covered before, but when Super Rare Games offered to send me this physical copy of Graceful Explosion Machine, I figured it'd be fun to tackle this video from the perspective of examining physical indie releases in general, as well as their significance! Hope you enjoy it. And now, onto work on another major project!

July 2020 Report 2020-08-01T13:52:42+00:00

July's been a mix of academics, Paper Mario, gigaleaks, working on videos and getting stuff for future ideas!

I had to do some academic work as part of a short but sweet summer term this month. That's done right now as of writing this, and I probably won't be dealing with any more school work until the beginning of September, so that's a relief. I've been working on YouTube content on my own free time between that and checking out new releases like Paper Mario, and I won't lie that seeing the recent resurgence of COVID cases in Hong Kong has been a bit of a downer lately, that and my fluctuating sleep schedules. Hopefully that all comes to pass soon!

The upcoming Things of Interest episode about physical indie releases is now going through editing, after I finally gathered enough footage and done voice recording this month. I'm probably putting more effort into it than I should for a quick #freeproduct review video, but I guess that's still a good thing. I'm still editing it as I write this report (despite having a minor nose allergy today whoops), but patrons in the Sneak Peeker tier can view an early 3-minute preview right now. If you're not in that tier, you can still catch up on the VOD of my gameplay livestream if you haven't already! This video should be done within the first few weeks of August, after that it's full speed ahead on the 3DS AR Games core video.

Recent Pickups

I've gathered some...interesting stuff this month. In terms of game collecting, I *finally* found a physical US copy of Rhythm Heaven Fever. I've also struck an extremely sweet deal on several N64 games, including Star Fox 64, Majora's Mask and Pokemon Snap! I need to check them out more when I have the chance. But in terms of items that can make for great video subjects:

This is Mario no Photopi, possibly one of the most obscure Mario games in existence, as it was released near the end of the N64's lifespan exclusively in Japan, as a Photoshop-like creativity tool. Figuring it all out while not knowing any Japanese has been a really wild ride myself, and I've even went as far as to find a period-accurate old digital camera in order to make sense of how this software all works, as it uses an old memory card format! Needless to say, I still have some ways to go before figuring out all its secrets, but I've been getting there.

In addition to this, I have something on its way to me via mail that will prove to be a perfect subject for Things of Interest. I won't say what it is here to preserve the surprise for a little moment, but here's a hint...it's a bootleg of a Nintendo product.

That's all for this month's report! Life's busy as usual with lots of distractions, but I definitely hope I can clear out my backlog of video ideas soon. After all I don't really want to keep my relevance only on Twitter memes. :P Thanks again for your support!

Patreon Game Stream #4 2020-07-15T13:55:48+00:00close

Update: Apologies to those who experienced buffering during the stream, my capture software and YouTube weren't showing me good numbers, and while I wasn't directly monitoring the stream quality, I'm guessing it's occasionally gone a bit bad. I have no clue as to way, except either YouTube is being mean or the game I'm playing, Graceful Explosion Machine, has many flashy graphics that are a bit tougher to stream.

Either way, while I evaluate the possibility of revamping this format into a video since livestreams are probably a less viable option for patrons, you can still watch the replays here!

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jOTY2qiXYQ

If you're seeing this post right as it goes out, in about an hour I'll be doing a Patreon game stream over on YouTube! In my last report I mentioned reviewing a physical indie release from Super Rare Games as part of a Things of Interest video, this stream will be about the game in question!

If you missed it, don't worry! The stream will be up and available for all patrons after it ends.

June 2020 Report 2020-07-01T09:09:48+00:00

The year is finally half over...if it would hurry up then that'd be great! :p

Since last month's report, stuff has finally been moving along for me, and it absolutely feels nice. So nice that I managed to get another video out during June!

Famicom 3D System: Nintendo's 3D Roots

At long last, it was finally done! I first mentioned wanting to do a core video on the Famicom 3D System way back in August of 2018, and after several shipping delays and worldwide events aplenty, I managed to get it done. I'm very satisfied with how it turned out! It might not have been as popular as my other core videos since the majority of the video subjects aren't something that people are too familiar with, but I feel that overall it was still a very interesting accessory to touch upon, and a perfect subject for a core video.

The fact that I obtained a R.O.B. and Power Glove during the planning stages of the video also meant that I could do that 'Rad AK' skit at the beginning and end, and I'm sure that it'll be brought back for a future video on R.O.B. the Robot...as I said in that video, that can definitely wait, since it would need more planning and recording setups to work! :p

Also, have the full thumbnail art I drew for the video! As a small bonus.

I've probably talked about the making-of more than enough times over the past few months, so I'll just stop babbling. Just keep in mind that for those who are new patrons, the full recording sessions I've done for gameplay footage are still available to watch, and will remain Patreon-exclusives for the forseeable future! I'll do more recording streams in the future for upcoming videos, which I'll touch upon shortly.

Game & Watch: Donkey Kong | Things of Interest

I really wanted to make a quick video to cleanse my palate after that last video, so I figured I'd do a Things of Interest episode on something I bought for my birthday which also happened to be a great opportunity to talk about the history and design of Game & Watches for those who are unfamiliar with them! If you happen to feel some LGR vibes off of this video, yeah it was definitely inspired a bit by it, but I also like to sneak in some quick gags if given the opportunity. I think this is mostly how I want Things of Interest episodes to go in the future, essentially just small-scale core videos, so keep an eye out for future ones, because oh I definitely have plans.

Future Videos

So, what's next? For those of you who haven't my sharings on my Discord server, here's my current plans.

My next video that I'm actively working on will be another Things of Interest episode, this time about limited physical releases of indie games that have been seeing a surge in popularity in recent times! One physical publisher, Super Rare Games, has kindly sent over a free copy of one of their recent releases, and I figured this would be a chance to talk about the significance of these kinds of releases, in terms of bonuses, game preservation and more.

I also mentioned previously in the April report that the next core video will be about the 3DS AR Games! For something that was bundled with every system sold, it's kinda weird to see them not being mentioned a lot lately. However, with the 3DS nearing 10 years old and the nostalgia cycle for the thing finally settling in, this is probably the right time to revisit these minigames and see how their technology has impacted other sectors in later years. I'll probably be doing Patreon game streams of it for the Sneak Peeker tier in the future, so keep on eye out! I'll share additional details when I'm ready.

Oh and also, the developer of Meme Run recently contacted me about something he's working on...I have no idea what's gonna happen next...

That's it from me for now! I actually have a summer semester going on right now on the academic side of things, but the workload is relatively way lower than what I got in March and April, so it hopefully shouldn't impact my upcoming video plans and schedules too much! It's great to finally have something to report on again. Catch you guys later for more updates!

May 2020 Report 2020-05-28T18:12:25+00:00

Well, let's get right to it!

Unfortunately, 80% of this month was spent on schoolwork. At least I learned some neat skills during all this like basic 3D animation, which I've been wanting to figure out for a long time now lol

Fortunately, that part is (thank GOD) finally done and editing has now resumed on the Famicom 3D System video! If you missed it, I uploaded a preview of it yesterday, showcasing Cosmic Epsilon and Falsion.

June will DEFINITELY be the month I finish this video. I've been dying to finish it at this point, but I'm also not going to hastily rush through the editing job. As such, there's not much to report in this...report, aside from the aforementioned preview. There is one thing though...

Patreon is announcing something related to taxes or something

Turns out Patreon is going to be charging sales tax for pledges now starting from July 1st, which is grrrrrreat. It shouldn't be a large amount from what I've heard as it depends on location and the type of Patreon benefit offered, but do check out some of the details over here.

This has been a tough month, but the hard part's mostly over for now! Thanks again for sticking with me, and to any new patrons, welcome aboard! Hopefully I have way more to share in June for you guys.

(Also June 3rd is my birthday...in case some of you here don't know. Dunno what I'd do for the occasion if at all, but here's a pre-emptive thanks for your upcoming birthday wishes lol)

Work is resuming on the Famicom 3D System video, so here's a new preview! Also, future sneak peeks (including this one) will be available to all patrons, because I've felt this video has seen enough delays at this point and want to make up a little for that, heh.

April 2020 Report 2020-05-03T08:58:53+00:00

In the wise words of Mario...

Hoo boy, this month was crazy for me as the first of my two-month rush to finish my remaining university assignments for the semester. But there's still stuff to talk about!

A History of Nintendo's Hong Kong Releases

This month's video has been received extremely well! I'm surprised a lot of people were this interested by the topic, especially with that Cantonese bit at the beginning.

While the idea for an April Fools video where I speak in Chinese has been around for a year or so, I've been wanting to talk a little about Nintendo of Hong Kong for a while now. Back in 2016 I made an experimental video where I sort of did an unscripted ramble about the controversy surrounding The Pokémon Company's decision to unify the different Chinese name translations for the Pokémon series across China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Since then, the idea of talking more about Nintendo of Hong Kong (specifically their weird 3DS release cycles at the time) lingered at the back of my mind until I finally figured to use this year's video as a way of doing so.

Despite being a Hong Kong native, I had to do quite a bit of research as all of the game consoles I own were Japanese or American imports, and I had no clue about Nintendo's previous history in Hong Kong, or even if there was any. Thankfully quite a few nice folks helped me out on that front! There are probably some underground local communities in Hong Kong that are very knowledgeable about the histories of releases in the area, but I'm sadly not a part of one of them...like I said, the majority of folks I interact with online aren't from around here.

Overall though, this is a topic I thoroughly enjoyed learning about! There are probably bits of info I missed (heck, someone contacted me with some additional info that I've added to the pinned comment of the video), but it was cool to finally demystify my perceptions of Nintendo's previous presence in Hong Kong! And of course, know how to keep an eye out for older Hong Kong releases. :P

Famicom 3D System Video

It's that time of month again...

I feel like I owe a bit of an apology for mentioning how this video would be released closer to the April 1st video...seeing that it's May now. I don't think I did guarantee an April release back in that March update video, but as a sort of compensation, I released a public preview of the video. And there's definitely a lot of interest in it!

Unfortunately, as much as I would love to finish the editing job, I became occupied by the sheer amounts of assignments I had to hand in by the end of May. I'm churning my way through them, and I've still got a handful of research papers and some animation work to finish. The occasional free time I've got between assignments was admittedly used to unwind in Animal Crossing, because that's probably the one thing keeping me sane during all this, but with the reception to the public preview and all these future video ideas popping up in my head, I deep down really can't wait to finish the video. I need to tell you all how the Rad AK arc concludes.

I'd say to look forward to the final video this month...but I don't want to make further promises with the uncertainty of things, although more previews would certainly seem to be possible! Though once again, I sincerely apologize for the further delay.

Future Things

Some academic work won't stop me from thinking about future video ideas!

While $2+ patrons can check out the full list of ideas I have in the #youtube-schedule channel of my Discord server, here are some of the ideas that I might decide to tackle next after the Famicom 3D System video.

  • 3DS AR Games

I replayed some of the 3DS AR minigames recently in a private stream with friends, and it really got me thinking about how forward-thinking the AR tech in the 3DS was, seeing how it is now almost a standard feature in smartphones and such. Despite being bundled software with the system, the AR Cards have actually largely been forgotten or simply remained as memories in most 3DS players, which makes it a prime video subject!

...I just realized I'd also have to take a look at other 3DS games that supported AR cards, huh? This is gonna be another large(ish) project, isn't it...

  • Cooking Mama Cookstar

Yes, I bought a (used) copy of Cooking Mama Cookstar and have streamed it on Twitch. Back when I first obtained it I mentioned I may make a video on it, but you might already know conventional reviews aren't exactly my thing, and lots of other YouTubers have already rushed in to capitalize on the controversy surrounding the game's release.

To have a more thorough look on the game itself and its history, I would have to look at the publisher who obtained the Cooking Mama license for the game, Planet Digital. They're actually a recently-founded publishing company with the initial intent of actually funding game development through blockchain technology! At least...that's what current info seems to suggest to me, and I have to do a lot more research about that and the other games they've released. A comprehensive look at this mysterious Cooking Mama game is definitely my end goal here. Maybe look forward to more streams of it in the future.

And that's it for April! From the bottom of my heart, thank you once again for sticking around, for both the April Fools special and my upcoming projects! There's still a rough time ahead, but when all is said and done I just want to keep working on things that so many people enjoy. You guys are the best!

March 2020 Report 2020-03-30T13:38:16+00:00

Hi again!

This month has been both kinda interesting and foreboding for me. Despite there being not many updates on my YouTube channel this month save for a Direct Mini reaction, I want to thank you guys again for sticking with me, especially at a time when both my ability to balance YouTube videos and school, as well as the performance of my YouTube content are uncertain under COVID-19. Believe me, I really want to try my best to work on videos, especially during this trying time where everyone is stuck home and such. With that said...

The April 1st video is done!

I did manage to create a full core video this month about the history of Nintendo's releases in Hong Kong, and you all can watch it early right now! It will release publicly on April 1st, as part of April Fools. How it ties in, I won't say outright until it releases. :p

I'll save some detailed thoughts about it on next month's report, but this core video wouldn't have been possible without help from quite a few people. I might dive into the craziness that is researching facts for this video in the next report as well! It's overall a very interesting topic to work with, and one that definitely fits the bill for my channel.

Also, as a little treat, here's the thumbnail avatar art I've drawn for this video! I'm getting fond of the idea of drawing unique thumbnails for core videos, heh.

Famicom 3D System video

All the voiceover recordings for the Famicom 3D System core video have been completed, which leaves video recording and editing left! Admittedly production of the April Fools video took up the majority of this month since it was produced on a bit of a short notice compared to my other videos. That being said, I'm still confident in the ability to get it out in a much shorter timeframe after the April 1st video releases...right after I take care of some academic projects!

Personal Update

Here's a look at my current academic work schedule as of this post:

The purple items are all upcoming assignments! The courses I've been studying generally don't have examinations, instead there are multiple large projects that are handed in after the end of the semester (mine ends at the end of April, with projects going on till the end of May). As upcoming projects start to creep on me, I'm going to try getting that Famicom 3D System video filmed asap, so at least I have time to just slowly edit it between assignments. I really wouldn't want to see it come out in May, and want to reserve my semester break for other projects on the backburner!

Recent Pickups

Finally, here are some neat things I picked up during this month that can be used as interesting video subjects or be helpful for video making! You might've seen me post about these on Twitter. Whenever I pick something up for my collection, I usually get myself familiar with it and research it for a while before I can confidently begin production on a related video, so it might take some time before you'll see these in a video, but they'll all be added to my list of video ideas and plans!

I finally have an American NES to call my own...or as I like to call it, a Tetris machine! (I owned a Hong Kong variant a while back that is briefly featured in my April 1st video -- I let it go because PAL video and I don't stick. Sorry dude)

I only have 3 official NES games in my possession right now as games and accessories for the NES are hard (and sorta expensive) to come across in Hong Kong without some eBay shopping. I mostly picked it up just due to all the differences it had compared to the Famicom, and also because it's a system I've known about for the longest time but have only seen in person once. Who knows how my collection for it will grow in the future!

...this is the iQue Player, a China-exclusive variant of the Nintendo 64 with fascinating features! This is one of those items I thought I would only come across if I had enough luck, and it seems the day has come. There are multiple popular videos about the thing already, but since then, the iQue Player has seen some resurgence thanks to homebrew discoveries and the speedrunning community, which are definitely points I want to address in a video about it, in addition to deep diving into its history to show people what the heck an 'iQue' even is. Definitely going to be another large video project in the far future!

A few days ago, I picked up a CRT television...for free! (Did you know analog TV is still available in Hong Kong until the end of 2020?)

My only other CRT before this is a 9-inch Sony BVM. While that definitely has a far superior video quality, I've been longing for a larger screen size on certain occasions. It allows for easier use of some of the gaming accessories I have, such as the Famicom light gun, Power Glove...and even the Super Scope! Yes, they'll be video subjects...eventually. I hope.

That's about it for the March report! Hopefully when the end of April rolls around and around 60% (I think?) of my university projects are taken care of, I can share more details about videos beyond the Famicom 3D System! Talking about that system for so long has made it sound kinda weird in my head -- maybe it's best that I finally finish up that video.

WarioWare D.I.Y Cover - Windfall Island (The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker) 2020-03-02T15:38:16+00:00close

Here's a quick little bonus for you guys! I've been occasionally working on new WarioWare D.I.Y. covers in the last few months and have finally been able to release two of them! One of them is on my secondary channel right now, while this one is a special early treat for patrons!

My second channel will be future home for music covers since I don't want them to detract from the core videos that the audience of my main channel now mostly expects. There may be more of these to come in the future!

February 2020 Report 2020-02-28T14:27:51+00:00

Hey there! This is a new type of write-up I'm going to try doing every month, detailing my thoughts on any projects released, as well as what progress has been made on future projects. Since I've been going back-and-forth between writing scripts, doing university work, recording voiceovers, updating Discord and whatnot, I figured this would be a good way to consolidate my progress into one list each month, since it might not always look too apparent! So look forward to more of these reports at the end of each month.

Pro Pack Mini | Things of Interest

A Things of Interest video on the Pro Pack Mini, a knockoff of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, released early this month! I'm very glad with how the video turned out, seeing that I found it a perfect Things of Interest subject the moment I first saw it.

By the way, someone asked me in the comments if the Pro Pack Mini supported the storage functions that allowed you to save data like Miis onto the Wii Remote. And it does! I actually forgot about this feature so didn't talk about it in the video. Talk about obscure functionality.

It's safe to say that there will probably be more wacky unlicensed accessories to be showcased on TOI soon, but I also have some classic Nintendo accessories in my plan! If you have some neat ideas for a Things of Interest episode, feel free to throw them my way.

Personal Update

I'd make a 'living under a rock' joke, but your life has probably been affected by the coronavirus in some form or fashion already. I'm still doing fine myself! While my time spent outdoors has obviously significantly reduced, I actually still have to attend my university classes via online meetings and deal with assignments and all that (I actually had to put recording duties on hold for the past 2 days to finish up an animatic), so as much as I hope to literally just work on my own stuff all day, that's sadly not the case. But that doesn't mean I haven't been working on stuff at all!

Works In Progress

I'm actually actively working on two videos right now! Seeing as my current schedule seems to be a video per month, this might be a slight challenge. :p

After almost half a year of deliberations, the script for the Famicom 3D System video is finally done! This is probably the longest time I've spent reviewing something since the Game Boy Camera video, and part of that was because I acquired all 7 games that it supported and played (mostly) through them over the past few months. You can actually catch my stream archives of these games here and here -- they're available to all patrons right now!

The video is currently in the voiceover recording process. I'd tell you confidently to look forward to it in March (and I will definitely try my darnedest to release it then), but I'm also doing preliminary work on...

April Fools

...what I'm doing this year is still a secret! I've been thinking about how much effort I want to put in to this year's video, and with pretty much all my previous April Fools endeavours being mostly jokes, this time I kinda want the percentage of actual content to outweigh the jokey bits. You'll hear more about it next month!

After this video, I'll finally be putting all my focus on completing the Famicom 3D System core video, so I definitely mean it by that last sentence. :p Enjoy the video!

2019 Year In Review 2019-12-29T16:42:26+00:00

It's time!

Happy New Year! (Or end of the year if you're a patron reading this early.)

2019 was an interesting year for my channel. The channel growth throughout the year was smaller than in 2018, and I think I've put out less in terms of number of videos, but I think what I've accomplished during the year was pretty solid. I've made more friends, got in touch with more of my favorite creators among other things!

There were a lot more spontaneous video ideas produced during the year, as a lot of the big video ideas that were in my mind had to be put in the backlog just because I haven't found the time to research more or gather the materials necessary. I was actually a bit nervous about my studies as I was going into my third year in university (one more year to go!), and wanted to focus more on my studies and academic projects. (The turmoil in Hong Kong for the past 6 months kinda threw a wrench into those plans.)

With all these events in my personal life combined, it made it harder for me to keep my sole attention on developing new video ideas, especially the big ones I wanted to make. That said, I found this year to still be a great one for my YouTube hobby after all. I'm still very lucky to have this sizable audience that enjoys my content (and especially my patrons reading this for supporting me!)

This year in review is originally going to be a multiple-hour-long commentary on each of my core videos (as voted by my Patreon supporters in a poll), but unfortunately I've been dealing with a mildly-inconvenient blocked/runny nose for the past few weeks due to the cold weather, and that would've interfered with my plans to do a livestream without coming off as being sick. So here's a big in-depth article on my thoughts on the significant videos I've produced this year, plus some interesting tidbits about them and a look into what 2020 holds! I hope you'll still enjoy it if you want to know more about my video-making processes.

Without further ado, let's start with...

Game Boy Camera: A Deep Dive Into Fun-tography

I teased a video about the Game Boy Camera at the end of my Play-Yan Micro core video, and I'm glad I was finally able to get around to making a video about it! (unlike another big video I've been teasing for months *cough*)

There have been multiple YouTube videos about the Game Boy Camera, so the goal of my core video was to be an in-depth overview of pretty much all of the Game Boy Camera's features, including hidden options and minigames. I hope this decision didn't make it too boring. :P Anyway, here some some neat facts and tidbits:

  • In the opening segment I capped off Nintendo's history of gimmicks with the Quality of Life project. It was gonna be the Wii Vitality Sensor ("...literally folding cardboard! Measuring your heart rate!...oh.") But after that I realized it was too similar to Jimmy Whetzel's Game Boy Camera which contained a similar riff on it.
  • I honestly am still super fascinated with all the other cameras on Nintendo's various systems. Heck, I made a video on Photo Dojo later on, but I may have other core video ideas planned for the other camera games someday! Maybe this year? Who knows.
  • Since most of the Game Boy Camera footage shown is from an emulator, I had to take pictures of other objects with my notebook's webcam, which was a lot harder than it looks. This is also why there weren't a lot of outdoor shots shown. This is something I kinda regret, but hey, what can you do.

  • I liked the 'Run' gag in this one! It's like a very infamous meme at this point, but I wanted to do something new than just pointing at the scary faces like I've never seen them before. And no I didn't drop the GBA directly onto my floor, there was a cushion below me.
  • I teased a possible Things of Interest video on the Game Boy Printer in this one! I haven't gotten any new Game Boy games that are compatible with it at this point, but I'm probably still going to make a video on it soon anyway, just so I can share my mild pain of getting new printer paper that's suitable for it in 2019.

  • Real talk, I'm glad this magnificent picture is possible out of the box. I still have it taped to a wall, but the ink has definitely faded a bit, just like any other old receipt does.
  • I could've used a much more creative idea than just waving a Kirby plush around for the 'animation', heh. But when you're limited to using a notebook webcam, actual stopmotion animation is out of the question. :P
  • Patreon supporters get to watch the full unaltered clip of me playing the Ball minigame for almost 8 minutes straight trying to go for the high score and failing miserably. These are the best perks truly.
  • I had no idea how to operate the music making tool in the Game Boy Camera until I was working on this video. I tried giving a simple enough explanation here but I still stand that the controls are way too convoluted for Game Boy controls. It's still impressive though!
  • The long skit where I try to raise the flag in Run! Run! Run! through button mashing is obviously a reenactment but yes according to my experience it WAS that hard.
  • I got a shoutout from YouTube Gaming for this so I've probably already peaked

Photo Dojo: Anyone is Here!

Oh boy, talk about a video idea for my channel that ticks all the boxes. Obscure game? Check. Interesting gimmick? Check. Evokes nostalgia in a limited group of people? Check. I had tons of fun making this video, even if it's not as gag-heavy (save for the skits at the beginning and end), I think I did a good job making an informative video on Photo Dojo, which hasn't been done on YouTube yet to my knowledge. I love me some obscure subjects.

  • I have terrible budgets and manpower for my opening skits. I literally found the 'floating string in the sky' stuffed in a random cabinet since I didn't have a conventional rope and wasn't able to have someone else dangle it from the sky for me at the time. Everything you see in the opening part of the video was shot and acted out by myself only. (I obviously sought help for the in-game posing segments.)
  • The in-game AK fighter shown in the video was created specifically for it to document the fighter-making process, but on my personal Photo Dojo save, I had a way younger version of me taking to the battlefield with slightly cringe-worthy lines as "All your base are belong to me" and "A winner is I." I stole the "I diagnose you with pain" line from my younger self though, that's still a good one.
  • My only regret for this video is not being able to cover the Photo Dojo website and the bonus custom content they released for it. Maybe a more serious web archivist will be able to dig those assets out or something!
  • Shoutouts to the Photo Dojo community by the way. If you told me that there are still people actively posting new custom fighters in 2019 before I started making this video I would not have believed you.
  • The fact that I could record and post new direct-feed Photo Dojo footage to YouTube since Nintendo's own trailer probably already makes my 2018 investment in a 3DS capture card worth it.

  • I'm weirdly proud of the "port Melee to it" joke. Maybe it's because I spent way too much time setting it up for a 5-second gag.
  • Some of the other fighters you see in the single-player mode segment were custom characters sent to me by my Patreon patrons! I want to do more neat patron contributions for some of my future videos as well, provided there is a way to make it happen in the context of said videos.
  • I like the Pichu joke ending shut up also I predicted Smash VR

Now here's something truly fascinating: I actually want to make an addendum for this video down the line as an interesting piece of Photo Dojo history has surfaced since its posting! A 3DS prototype was discovered by user Voodooween in June 2019, and on it...a tech demo from 2010 called 'Photo Dojo DX'!

While I would absolutely love to get my hands on it and make a follow-up video talking about it, methods for dumping the demo off of the prototype unit are still being looked into as of this article's posting. I definitely hope that it gets figured out soon!

PDI Check: The 3DS App That Costs US$100

And my most popular core video of 2019 goes to...!!

This video may draw similarities to the Meme Run video I made in 2017, simply because both it and PDI Check fit into the category of 'meme eShop release', but I felt like this one was worthwhile to dive to, and it wouldn't have been made possible without the help of my fellow patron Angry, who volunteered for the purchase. It was kind of a gamble I had to take, but I'm glad it turned out well!

I actually first heard of PDI Check around the time of its release, but I didn't pay too much mind to it and all I knew from news accounts reporting on it was that 'it costs 99 USD, isn't that strange'. Honestly, with its surface production values and price point I could've absolutely teared it apart in a video, but as I researched and found out about the good intentions behind it I couldn't bring myself to do it. Sure, the app has its own flaws and what you do get for the price of 99 USD does certainly raise a few eyebrows, but there are legitimate doctors out there in third-world countries using this app as a tool to diagnose eye problems, and that is a pretty amazing fact that I wanted to bring to light with this video. Overall, this is probably one of my most favorite core videos thus far, and I'm glad it did well!

  • Shoutouts to Dr. Robert Arnold, the creator of PDI Check who actually watched and commented on my video! I hope I wasn't too harsh... :]
  • Bonus fact! I mentioned that Alex Damarjian is the programmer of PDI Check, and he has previously worked on licensed games in the past. He actually used to be a part of High Voltage Software, and has had a hand in games such as Iron Man 2, and several Dora the Explorer games. He currently has his own studio and continues to work on games with medical applications, such as a VR game that uses vergence therapy.
  • In case you missed it (or actually have red-green color blindness): the color vision chart at the 1:44 mark shows le turt!

  • To actually record direct-feed footage of PDI Check, I had to play it on my capture card unit, which is a 2DS! I did have to use some homebrew magic to migrate the game over to a New 3DS (as shown in the on-screen footage) so I could actually use the app as intended myself.
  • The U shapes pointing in different directions in the eye tests are called 'Landolt C's. I'm a dum-dum.
  • The Congratulations joke had the perfect set-up so I had to do it even though it seemed like it was probably coming from a mile away.
  • In the end, I said it's up for you to decide whether PDI Check is worth its asking price, based on its presentation and real-world applications. Personally, I do think that price is justified. While I still have criticisms about its presentation, I think that the doctors behind it should be compensated for their work on it, especially since doctors in third-world countries are able to use PDI Check for free. Considering all the travelling the doctors have to do, plus R&D and whatnot, including the fact that this was a 2018 3DS release and not many people would've bought it anyway, I figured a price of 99 USD would be reasonable as a way to recoup some of the costs, including a tip of appreciation for the doctors' work.
  • "You could've just pirated it!!" The app was not available on any sort of pirating platform at all at the time of me making the purchase. :)

The Weird World of Play Nintendo

And here's the last core video of the year. It was smaller subject I had on hand in case the big core video project I was chipping away at for the past months wasn't able to come to fruition just yet, but it's still a great subject matter and a part of Nintendo history! (whether you like it or not.) I devised lots of neat little gags for this video, as it has a more light-hearted tone (it is a kids' website after all), so you could say that it's an experimental ground for things like that.

  • I envisioned this gag as my room being decorated with papercraft Halloween decorations lying all over the place, but that might've been too ambitious! The ones in this shot are the only Halloween-themed ones I could actually print and display. The Gooigi mask was neat though.
  • I did go out and buy a party blower as part of the gag. It only came in a bag of party accessories though, so I have unused eye masks and party hats and whatnot lying around now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Did you see the link that was sent by mysterious_internet_guy_2001? Did you type it in your browser? I really hope you typed it in.
  • One of the main reasons I wanted to examine Play Nintendo was to talk about their interactive games, but after actually going on the website I was kinda disappointed. The only non-generic game they have is Mario Stargazer, and I felt it would've been neater to see more minigame adaptations of Nintendo IPs. (There was a BOXBOY smartphone minigame released as part of a UNIQLO collaboration, which is probably something that would be perfect for this website.) Heck, Nintendo could've ported over some old official Flash games used to promote their older titles. (Those are actually in my list of planned video ideas...)
  • The 'feeling long' joke is probably one of the very first ideas I had for the video, and it came out exactly as I envisioned it! Of course that meant doing some additional Truly Professional VFX but I like experimenting with new editing/effect techniques.
  • "I remember when I used to print random crap that I made in Microsoft Word..." I still have some of those! They're in Chinese and too terrible/cringe-worthy for my taste though. But because you're all extra special, here's a little peek:

...yeah.

  • I probably could've spent time talking even more about the Play Nintendo YouTube channel and some of the other series they had. One of the series that I wanted to talk about but cut from the script was 'The Adventures of Link and Larry the Cucco'. It's...well, just check it out.
  • I'm 60% sure that me slamming my notebook onto the sofa at the end played a part in its left speaker getting slightly busted a few days afterwards. Oops.

Things of Interest

I figured that I'd talk a bit about the Things of Interest series I started in 2018 as well! Some of these have pretty much been mini core videos on their own, but I like experimenting with the format every now and then. I wasn't particularly too proud of my occasional stuttering in the Sunsoft Wide Boy video, but my off-script speaking definitely improved a lot by the time I unboxed the Kirby Pause Figure, so in the future I might have the confidence to do more unscripted unboxings! I'd tell you to look out for new TOI subjects soon, but the latest one has been upgraded to a core video! You'll hopefully see it verrrry soon by the time this article goes public.

And that's it for 2019, and subsequently the end of the decade! My entire YouTube schtick is mostly encompassed in the past 10 years, so that is some serious progress I've made, and I can't wait to see where it goes next. As for 2020 in general, my most important goals are to aim for completing the big video projects I didn't get to finish! You'll hopefully hear a lot more about them as I approach them. I've been collecting a lot of interesting games and accessories throughout 2019 and I really want to give them the spotlight they deserve. I may not be able to get all my currently planned ideas done in 2020, but I'll try my best! And once again, I would like to thank you all for sticking around and coming along for the ride. There's still a long way to go!

Have a fantastic new year, and MVBBY!

Update on the next video & year in review! 2019-12-21T04:53:39+00:00close

Hey! I previously mentioned that I was working on a Things of Interest video that I'm aiming to release in December or early January.
I've been working on the script (about 75% done!) since the last week or so. I was planning on giving a simple look at Konami's Hyper Shot controllers for the Famciom, but after playing through the whopping two games that support it and learning some neat obscure tidbits about them, I've decided to graduate it into a full core video! I'll still see if I can get it done in December, but an early January release may also be likely. Stay tuned!
Also, if you haven't voted on the 2019 year in review poll in the last post, go check it out! Looks like the full commentary option is currently in the lead.
That's all for now. Have a great holiday!

2019 Year in Review Poll! 2019-12-16T13:56:27+00:00

This is an (updated) announcement repost from Discord, but here I can finally put this to an actual poll!

As we approach the end of the year, I want to do another year in review with the videos I've put out this year, talking about interesting things I learned in the making of them and/or my personal favorite bits from each. This year I might include some of the Things of Interest videos as well in addition to core videos!

I want to try shaking up the formula of it, so let me know if you have any suggestions for it! My current ideas are below, so I'll be putting them to a poll for now.

This is it folks

I'd like to say my core videos try to strike a balance or vary between being informative and comedic. This is definitely closer to the latter, but that also meant I had a lot of fun recording and editing it. Hope you enjoy the full video! This will be released in time for Halloween.

Special core video preview! 2019-10-28T13:22:50+00:00close

Play Nintendo is the next small core video topic I'll be tackling in time for Halloween, as an examination of one of the lesser talked about Nintendo online spaces. This preview is around 80% of the final video, and since we're almost approaching the scheduled release date, I figured all of you should get to preview it early as my thanks for your patient support!

Random off-topic update but yeah, the big Famicom 3D System video is still on the backburner. The recent Hong Kong protests have definitely played a role in the delayed material-gathering for the video. In the meantime, I have other topics to talk about! When college isn't in the way. Hah.

Thanks once again and enjoy this preview!

(From this post onward, posts exclusive to the 'Sneak Peeker' tier will be labelled with 'SP'.)

This is the NS VR Glass, a cheap knockoff of the Nintendo Labo VR goggles! Is it as good as its official counterpart? Well...there's no consensus made in this preview yet, but you can still watch me build 90% of it. :P

Patreon Exclusive: The History of NESticle 2019-08-16T12:02:30+00:00close

Here's a little Patreon-exclusive bonus that deviates from my usual style of video! This was originally planned to be a video produced by the folks over at the Nintendo preservation group 'Forest of Illusion' about the rise of one of the first NES emulators. I was invited by them to narrate the script in April, but the group ceased activity in late June, and plans for the video have been scrapped.

I figured I'd still put together what I've recorded and quickly edit this as a video, so I hope you don't mind the simpler presentation visual-wise. The quotes that appear throughout the video were planned to be narrated by a bunch of other people, but unfortunately the video was scrapped before that could happen.

It's not a topic I'd regularly talk about on my channel, since it does revolve around more vulgar topics like edgy humor and such, but I do think it's a fascinating tale about the early rise of the emulation scene, so I hope you still enjoy it! Just...giving out a minor content warning.

The script for this video was written by the team at Forest of Illusion and doesn't fully represent my own views.

Update: I'm off on a short trip! But you can all watch a past stream right now 2019-08-03T13:04:41+00:00close

Hey, ho, it's time for another Patreon update!

Sorry to interrupt whatever it is you're doing but yeah, my personal life's been slightly packed for me lately as well! I've recently been busy packing and prepping for a camping trip that'll last from tomorrow until Wednesday, so I just wanted to give a heads up that there may not be any updates regarding video production until then. Thank you for your understanding.

To make up for it, I've decided to open up the VOD of my first Patreon Game Stream for all patrons! If you're not aware, my next core video is on the Famicom 3D System, and I'm currently planning on streaming gameplay of all 7 of its titles for my $2+ patrons, while discussing my deeper thoughts on each title as I play them.

Thank you once again for the support! I'll see you guys again (hopefully) later next week. :)

Patreon Game Streams! 2019-07-24T15:03:12+00:00close

Figured I should post an update here on Patreon as well!

As I record footage of games to use in my upcoming Famicom 3D System core video, I want to stream some gameplay footage exclusively for patrons as well while providing commentary!

These streams will remain available for patrons to rewatch after they've ended, and $1 patrons will be able to get access to them as well once the related core video has been published. Hopefully I can use this as a chance to get some more new ideas and talk more about my thoughts on the games I'm reviewing!

Also, if you've just happened to stumble onto this post as it is freshly posted, you can watch my second game stream live in just a few moments! Of course the link will still be up for rewatching after it's over...and I'll post links to the previous ones here as well!
